By 1964, Bruce Johnston was already a proven veteran on the West Coast music scene. Following up the success of the Rip Chords collaboration with Terry Melcher and the hit single "Hey Little Cobra," Johnston revved up the Kustom Kings. With a mission statement " to present the most authentic hot rod album on the market," the Kustom City U.S.A. album brought together an all-star team. Bruce Johnston wrote and co-wrote much of the LPs material, as did producer/arranger/saxophonist Steve Douglas. Rounding out the band were guitarists Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell, Ray Pohlman on bass, Jay Migliori on second sax and Hal Blaine on drums-WOW! Tedesco and Campbell lock in gripping guitar duels while Douglas and Migliori wail over the timing belt beat of Blaine and Pohlman. Johnston contributes superb vocal and piano work and together, the Kustom Kings jam the accelerator down to the floorboard! Through the years, word of Kustom City U.S.A. and its brilliance spread through the collector scene, with copies of the LP changing hands for considerable sums. Rockabilly icon, Eddie Cochran, best known for his "Summertime Blues", embodied the rebellious spirit of American teens, who in the 1950s, were in the middle of a cultural revolution. Cochran, a teenager himself when his first hit, "Sittin' In the Balcony", was released in 1956, was an extremely talented (and good-looking) musician, on the cusp of major stardom when he was suddenly killed in a car accident at the age of 21. RAYMEN - SINISTER FUNTIME
THE RAYMEN emerged with their back-from-the-grave, swamp-blues meets death-country and psychobilly sound in 1985, debuting on their 'Going Down To Death Valley' album. 'Desert Drive' and their double LP, 'From The Trashcan To The Ballroom' followed the next two years. Song themes run the gamut from werewolves, to voodoo, horror B-movies, trains, switchblades, witchdoctors, Lucifer, outer space and fast cars. Oh, yeah, and the perennial trouble with dames. Hoodoo you love? One constant in the band and its direction over, low, these many decades, has been head Rayman, and lead singer and songwriter, Hank Ray. With 15 albums and appearances on numerous compilations over the years, the Berlin based RAYMEN return in top form with their latest release, 'Sinister Funtime'. Hank is recognized as the Godfather of Death Country Rock, following a Goth C&W style of his own. On 'Sinister Funtime' he dials up the energy to recapture the dark ju-ju and fury that made the THE RAYMEN one of the top cult bands in the genre. Hank's distinctive, rugged baritone imparts an ominous tone to the songs, adding an extra dimension of menace and boding evil to the music. THE RAYMEN are scorching up the tracks again, playing to beat the very Devil they sold their souls to, all those years ago. Istanbul's REPLIKAS debut album K(2000) and second album Dadaruhi (2002) were released by the Ada Music label. The band's third album Avaz was produced by Wharton Tiers who is known for his work with bands such as: SONIC YOUTH, PUSSY GALORE, HELMET AND DINOSAUR JR. The album was released in May 2005 by the Doublemoon label. The band recorded their fifth album Zerre in a complex that they transformed into a studio environment, formerly a prison located in the GIsland. Peyote Music released Zerre in November 2008. Alongside releasing albums and playing concerts, REPLIKAS wrote music for films too. The first soundtrack by the band was in 2001 for the movie "Maruf" by Serdar Akar. In 2005 the band composed music for Kutlug Ataman's movie titled "Iki Gen Kiz" which won them the best film music award by SIYAD in 2006. The soundtracks were collected into an album named Film Mri which was released by Pozitif in October 2006. The band took part in Fatih Akins documentary "Crossing the Bridge"; pieces from their albums have been used in various short and feature-length movies. The sixth album Biz Burada Yok Iken consists of classic Turkish psychedelic and garage covers from the 1965-75 Anatolian Pop period. Biz Burada Yok Iken was released on CD in Turkey in 2012.
