Okay, here's the official tally of punk documentaries and films
the excellent:
This Is england: a recent drama about a young schoolboy who joins a skinhead gang in the 80s that gets into hot water when a racist teen takes over.
Punk rock movie: excellent account of the late 70s Uk scene with all the regulars: Clash, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, etc. You can search for it on google video
Decline of western civilization: the very first expose of hardcore california scene starring The Germs, FEAR and all your other favoritees
End of the century: the story of the Ramones- tragic, fascinating story of the first official punk band
Nw York Doll: touching and sad documentary about New York Doll's bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane and how he went from his modern career as a mormon librarian to his reunion with his old bandmates. This may be the only movie that actually made me cry, seriously
The good:
Sid and Nancy: great performance by Gary Oldman as everyone's favorite junkie next to Johnny Thunders: Sid Vicious. Sadly, the guy who plays Johnn "Rotten" Lydon is so over the top and dumb.
Repo Man: This lil 80s gem was helmed by the same man who directed Sid and Nancy, Alex Cox. The acting isn't amazing, but it's a fun late night scifi film with a nice 80s hardcore soundtrack and teaches you that the worst thing punks can do is to go out for sushi and not pay. Also, Cox is pretty out there: he refused to direct Three Amigos cos it didn't address the conflict in Nicaragua during the time.
Rock n Roll High School: again, not totally punk centric, but you get the Ramones, an exploding school, and Clint howard ( who is automatically cool because he's related to Ron Howard, director of Apollo 13 and the man who narrates and produced the genius that was Arrested fucking Development)altogether! oh and didja know the director of the film, Allan Arkush now produces and directs the hit show Heroes? So he's doin well for himself. Well, not at the moment though, with the strike and all.
The ???
The Great rock n roll swindle: okay, so this one has some nice Pistols performance footage, the infamous My Way musical number, but other than that it's blah
the ugly:
Suburbia: Penelope Sephriss tries to apply her hardcore punk scene observations to a fictional film, but it failed.
SLC Punk: gahhh serial mom's matthew lillard plays some stupid punk in the 80s, what the hell?
