rap picks (and a lil electronica too!)

  • I'm puttin the well known, able to get stuff first (the one's I've sat down and listened to on my computer)

    1988-1989:

NWA- Straight Outta Compton: If the Sex Pistols did rap, this is what it'd sound like

Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique: A million miles better than the overly goony Liscence to ill and this gang of three got better from here

De La Soul- Three feet high and rising: silly, almost poppy, A bit like the more joyous songs on the first three Ramones albums (example: eye know= I wanna be your boyfriend)

Public Enemy- it takes a nation of millions to hold us back: awesome, The Clash of modern rap, says I

    1990-1998:

Public Enemy- Fear of a Black Planet: Not as good as It takes a nation, but still pretty epic

De La Soul- De La Soul is dead: Okay, so if Three feet high and rising is nevermind the bollocks than this is Public Imge limited's debut: very odd, but has some good stuff such as ooodles of os and My brother's a basehead

The Chronic: A record so awesome, I can forgive Dr. Dre for representing Eminem

Del the funky homosapien- No cause for Alarm: he's had better stuff since 93, but better sub par Del than none at all

Notorious B.I.G.- Ready to Die: the velvet underground and nico as done by hip hop, this is all about sex and drugs, especially drugs

Nas-Illmatic: see the description of above, another beautiful if nihlistic album

Beastie boys-Ill communication: one word and one word only: Sabatoge!!

Beastie Boys- Hello Nasty: Body movin, Intergalactic, three mcs and one dj, all pretty sweet

    2000-2005:

deltron 3030- s/t: the coolest rap stuff Del may've done

MF Doom-Mad villiany: the best feat on here is Doom rapping with accordians in the background

MF Doom and Dj Dangermouse- the mouse and the mask: soundbites from Adult swim cartoons (a late night block of adult cartoons on Cartoon network) only adds to the goodness

    elctronica:

Gorillaz- s/t and Demon Days:both introduced me to MF doom and Del. Oh, and check out their book rise of the ogre, there's a chart of their musical tastes in there that helped me get intrigued too. I swear, for a fictional band, they're pretty fucking eclectic
