If you've seen Pink Flamingos as many times as I have you can't help but have noticed the poster for this movie in the background in the scenes at the Marble's house (which was John Water's house) He's a huge fan of this film and calls it one of the greatest "failed art films, a genre which does not exist anymore." You be the judge!
It's based on a Tennessee Williams play. Richard Burton gets kicked off a boat and swims the rest of the way to a Mediterranean island where Elizabeth Taylor, the meanest and the richest woman in the world (John Waters said her character was the inspiration for Divine) lives in an insanely pretentious opulent house where she is dictating her memoirs between bloody marys and narcotic injections.
It turns out somehow Burton is the "angel of death" and the whole thing takes a nihilistic left-turn into nowheresville. It was the only Burton/Taylor picture to lose money. Directed by Joseph Losey (These Are the Damned see below) With Noel Coward who gets served a sea monster and makes comments about menstruation.
NOTE: You may find this commentary by John "the prince of puke" Waters himself more entertaining than the movie itself!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_wIxWHBR0g
