Sort of.
They took away mono, they took away vinyl, they took away VHS, they took away boss jocks, they took away Times Square, they even took away CBGBs! Now they will take away free TV.
The upcoming mandatory transference of all broadcast TV to digitial, which requires you to buy a converter box (and there won't be used ones around!). Do you have the $40-$80 needed to buy for each of your TVs? Do you have cable? Good. But your perfectly good small / battery-powered TV will become instant junk! What will you do in a power failure/terrorist attack/natural disaster. Things aren't improving on those fronts, folks! I personally expect the worst re: power failures/attacks/ disasters. Do your parents and grandparents understand all this? How about ESL people?? I'm sure there are instructions about this in English, Spanish and Chinese.Fine. How many more languages got left out?
The president-elect now thinks this is a bad idea. Let him know you agree! I strongly urge you to read the NYTimes editorial by two former FCC chairman (!) who also oppose this move [ "...we are heading for a train wreck."]. It was headlined DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL and appeared in January 9's edition. Write a letter to the Times supporting the editorial of chairmen Michael Powell and William Kennard. The discount coupons are all gone and there may not be enough converter boxes. Also, some signals may ALSO require a new antenna or moving the one(s) you already have. Were you consulted on this? No! Is this still a democracy? So there you go: no more learning things on educational TV or being entertained for free or the culture a movie can bring or being kept informed.
