11 2007 Playlist

  • Each Month, I start a file in my iTunes that is a playlist for the tunes that catch my ear that month. I have been doing this since Feb of 2006, and each month I write a Mog post covering what I have been listening to each month… I am starting to post this write up in other spaces beyond my Mog (and if you are reading this somewhere besides Mog, you can find all the old ones at www.mog.com/iren )… cause I want to hit as many I-Balls as I can. As with any endeavor of this type this is an evolving form. For this month the new status quo (and I don’t have one of their songs for you this time around) is that I am going to include whole www addresses with each post (when available). Anyway for this month here is what caught my ear… Solitude by Ulver http://www.myspace.com/ulver1 I first head of these guys a couple of years back on NPR… a classical music reviewer was talking about them and the little snatches of what I heard was interesting enough to get me to check them out. I would love to tell you that they are simply one of those ubiquitous Norwegian Black Metal bands, but they are so much more. Now I have had my flirtations with that whole metal thing, with the heavy screamed chaos, there was a point about a year ago, when that angry sound was in my brain and so I put it in my ears as well… anyway, I ran across this track, a Black Sabbath cover, and I don’t think that I know the original song, but it’s defiantly a Sabbath song, at the same time it’s a Ulver song. It’s very accessible and cool, and perfect for this time of year. A Wolf’s Gotta Learn by The Forbidden Dimension http://www.myspace.com/forbiddendimension I think I have raved about these guys enough and talked up there newest record as well, so it’s should be no surprise that one of the new tunes made it on this list… so I am going to leave you with just a lyric.. Detention all couldn’t hold me now baby.. Tales Of Brave Ulysses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_Brave_Ulysses) by Cream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cream) and the cover by The Screaming Trees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screaming_Trees) Tales Of Brave Aphrodite by Beat Happening (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_Happening) All three of these are tied together so they get one little write up. Mark Lanegan sounds just like Mark McFinn from Mazinga on the spoken intro of their cover of this Cream tune. Now I haven’t been the biggest fan of Cream (I am not a huge Clapton fan), but as I hear more and more of their “Deep cuts”* I hear more and more that I like. This song just has that full, epic and rocking sound. The Beat Happening tune is an obvious reference to the Cream song, only at the other end of the spectrum. With it’s ‘cute’, minimal quality it really is the counter point of the originals roar. *and I hate that term, it’s just so dismissive, as if only the “Hits” count for anything The Cold the Dark and the Silence by Sea Wolf http://www.myspace.com/seawolf I have already written about this track this month on Mog in more detail. I found it because of the MPR Podcast of the show Musicheads. It’s really not the kind of thing that I like most of the time, but there is a nice ringing sparse quality to the tune that I dig. In many ways it’s a great companion piece to the Ulver tune that started off this list. Ok there it is, another month down. I know that it was a short list this time around, however sometimes that’s the way that things end up. Next month is going to be the last list of 2007, and I will be posting a new installment of the monthly playlist for that month, but at the same time I am thinking about adding something to it. I was thinking maybe a look back at the tunes that made it on my play lists this year, or I have been keeping a top 25 played tunes that were added this year playlist, maybe I will write about that.. or maybe I won’t… it all depends on what’s going on. Thoughts, comments, spare change?
