It’s that time of the month again, the start of a new one. It’s also coming up on the start of fall, the start of school, and in many places a new fiscal year… for me the start of a new month is a time for me to look back at my monthly play list that I generate of the tunes that have caught my ear over the last 4 odd weeks or so…
For me, the start of September this year and thing time around is a real changing point, I moved back to Ann Arbor Michigan, which I fled in August of 2002, and so five years later I am back, starting over again, and ready for my upcoming rock and roll vacation to Sweden, ready to do all that life stuff,… but, this is about the music and the tunes, so with out further ado here is my play list for August of 2007, the final MSP edition….
Hot Rod Lincoln by Bill Kirchen
This is a live version of the Rockabilly standard, which was most notably covered by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen of which Kirchen was a member. What makes this version so special is that in the middle of the tune Kirchen pays tribute to great American music by name checking several artists and playing a couple of riffs from their best known tunes… it’s a very fun and amazing lesson in the history of Rock, Pop, Blues and Country music…
The Hennepin Avenue Bridge by Brian Setzer
from his 2006 album 13, this is a great little banjo ballad about the Hennepin Ave Bridge in Minneapolis, in the song he name checks several Minneapolis area landmarks and the tune just has that traditional folk story song feel… oh and there is an ironic ending to the story.
Tiny Tits Tight Ass by Mary’s Kids
From the ashes of one of Oslo’s best bands of the last dozen years, Mensen. Mary’s Kids continue on with the same Hi Energy Rock and Roll. I think it was the refrain “it’s the way of the world” in this tune that grabbed me over and over this past month.
Hardware by Ripsnorter
One thing that I am seeing more and more in the music world is that people who mix subgenres seem to have a harder and harder time finding their audience. I know of a lot of punk/metal outfits that are too metal for the punks and to punk for the metal fans… I think Ripsnorter fall into this category. Their drummer Jay is one of my good friends from Minneapolis, and he and I have hung out more this past summer than we have in the 5 years I spent in the area. One of the things that we have in common, besides being music fans, is that we are both film fans. This song is about one of the films that we are both fans of, the cyberpunk monster in the towerblock saga, Hardware.
The Trains by The Nashville Ramblers
Sorry, that I don’t have a link for this one, it’s such a great tune that I posted it this month. It’s just a gem of a power pop tune that I found myself listening to over and over….
Rubber Duck Breakdown by The Agriculture Club
“Where have all the great truck driving songs gone?” that’s what this tune and this band ask with their punked up convoy punk and roll… what else do you need to know.
God Bless Lovebug by Chip Kinman and PCH
Great power pop style punk from the new act by LA Punk legend Chip Kinman (The Dils, Rank’n’File, Blackbird, Cowboy Nation). It’s fast, it’s furious and it’s fun..
Skull Crusher Mountain by Jonathan Coulton
I have been digging this melodic little tune about a evil super villain trying to connect romantically with a woman, a mortal woman… it’s funny, it’s insightful and reminds us that even super villains need love and have trouble with women… you can download it for free off of his site, and I also recommend that you check out his IKEA song.
That’s it for this month, as I am going to be on a rock and roll holiday in the middle of September I hope that there will be some tune that I end up just raving about… until then kick out the jams…
