After the biggest Trash A Go-Go ever in March, Shanghai's grime-time players are back! As the full moon rises monthly, so does Trash A Go-Go: the event basking in the glory that is all things vintage rock 'n' roll, surf, garage, punk, and groovy. This month's trash:
From Beijing via the darkest, murkiest landfill in the ocean, come the Flying Mantas. They sound like a boogie-board gang highjacked an oil tanker, turning its bulking, rusted mass into a traveling beach party. Expect some toe-tapping in your steel-tipped boots.
A two-some that owes more to Suicide than more contemporary rock-duos, Pairs brings a wall of disheartening, angular drone that disarms before their drummer/vocalist smashes your conscience to bits. Wailing guitars and vocals make this the LOUDEST band of the night.
J.B. And The Jockeys
Serving up old fruit-jars of classic rockabilly, J.B. And the Jockeys are a bright and shining tribute to the hits of yore. Dusting off the record-jackets and slicking back their hair, expect a finely-tuned history lesson for the uninitiated, and a raucous sing-along for diehards.
Crack Babies. That's all that I could verbalize after witnessing, nee, experiencing, the last Instigation show: Crack Babies. It's in the chorus to one of the songs the lead singer of this sloppy-punk gang that features the stringe-playing members of the Beat Bandits (Mizuzu and Toshi) belched out. A testament to the DIY spirit of rock and roll, and lots of beer, The Instigation is rock and roll not for the bleat-hearted.
With a foot in the ass-shaking surf-swing of Dick Dale and The Champs, the Beat Bandits allows listeners to hang-ten over bouncy baselines and jumpy keyboards until...until....CRASH! Mizuzu's Tsunami-sized guitar roars waves at the audience like a long-lost Godzilla villain. You're caught in the middle as these two sides duel it out, leaving the listener to pogo and twist with equal zeal.
DJ B.O
Becoming a DJ as an excuse to crawl out of his living quarters, He rebels against people who DJ because they are afraid to dance in public. He will sing and dance to provoke movement; he is somewhere between vaudeville and Warhol. Featuring vintage-hits and forgotten favorites, he thinks dance music is for pussies but The Shanghri-Las are fucking artists, man. Tech? NO.
DJ surfin'rina
Surf! Stomp! Twist! Jump, giggle, and shout! Flip, flop, and fly! Bump! Monkey! Limbo! Monkey! JUST DANCE.
