There be this crazy festival in Atlanta every Labor Day weekend called Drive Invasion at the Starlight Six Drive-In movie complex. It is the brainchild of one Rip Thrillby, guitarist of The Penetrators—R.I.P. I cannot overstate what a fine time it is. It is the insane and lovely America come to life—Route 66 road trip party in a drive-in movie parking lot—and it is a gigantic parking lot. No jam bands, no muddy mosh pit full of wallowing hippies, no dust cloud kicked up by same—just the occasional waft of BBQ smoke or the smell of burning tire rubber if the car folks get itchy.
Bands, beer, barbecue, B-Movies, hot rods, hot chicks, motorcycles, classic car/hot rod show. Bring Yer Own Beer/Booze/Food although snack bars are open and usual food vendors you see at an outdoor fest. Folks that go to this thing have had 10 years of practice. Bands start about noon and run 'til dusk. Then the movies start but even then it is mostly a giant roving social from group to group. It is the best there is.
Free overnight camping, too. If you got RV, van, comfy car seats, pick up truck, whatever, you can sleep in the lot. If you wanna pitch tent, there is the designated grassy knoll as well as some secret spots we can hep you to.
