Kopper is right, you can stay cheaply at a YMCA or a hostel.  As far as "real" hotels in Brooklyn, the only one in an area close to all of the action is http://www.hotellejolie.com/ and it is not cheap.

Are you thinking of spending most of your time in the Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick areas?  Or doing more Manhattan things?

Otto's is in East Village Manhattan(one train stop from Williamsburg), and it can be a fun place to hang out, depending on the night and what you're interested in.  Other than that, Manhattan isn't that great for hanging out at night in bars and clubs unless you know of a specific event you're going to.  Most places are really expensive, overcrowded with yuppies or college students into Lady Gaga, or just a totally standard bar you'll find anywhere in America.

What dates in June will you be here?  I can tell you about some night activities to check out and if you're looking for places to buy records, I can help with that too.

As far as places to stay, I'd just hit the internet and try to find a cheap hotel near a metro station.  If you stay near the L train line you'll be able to jump back and forth between Manhattan and the parts of Brooklyn worth going to.

There are a couple hostels in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I've heard of.  You might want to google around to find out how much they cost.  Williamsburg is a really safe neighbourhood, so you can feel central and comfortable.  Just be careful about "East Williamsburg" which is pretty much Bushwick, and that area can get a little dodgy, but has REALLY cleaned up the last few years, so it's not total gang wars or anything like that.

You might also want to check craigslist.com and see if you can rent an apartment.

    • Howdy Pat,

NYC is a pretty expensive place for hotels.  Here are some recommendations...

This place ain't super cheap but it's cheaper than almost anything in Manhattan and it's walking distance to all the rock'n'roll clubs in Williamsburg & Greenpoint, Brooklyn: http://www.hotellejolie.com/

If you need to go super cheap (> $75 a night), you'll want to look for hostels (something you know from old Europe) or the YMCA.  There's a YMCA in Greenpoint, Brooklyn with clean (but very simple) rooms:  http://www.ymcanyc.org/greenpoint/guest-rooms/accommodations/

If you're looking for kicks, check out the GaragePunkNYC calendar/blog: http://blog.garagepunknyc.com/ -- should be lots of rockin' action in June.

      cheers

    • When my wife and a friend of ours went to Cavestomp in 2001 we stayed at the YMCA in Brooklyn... I think it was free (or at least VERY cheap). It was just a couple of blocks from the venue, in Greenpoint. Stumbling distance!

    • Is there anyone here who know someone who can rent us a small apartment or a room ??

    • Never forget that the 'Deep South' is where rock'n roll came from.

    • In Montgomery, check into a venue called Head on the Door. They don't charge cover and have freakin great bands. Also, a hop, skip and a jump from there is Auburn, which has a great venue called The Independent. There have been stirings in Mobile about a place called The Alabama Music Box. Also, not too far from Mobile is Pensacola, FL, which has Sluggos and The Handle Bar.  Oxford is supposed to have some great rock venues but we have yet to connect there. Also, if you are that close to Memphis, you would be doing yourself an injustice not to check out their scene. It is one of our fav. towns to play.

FYI, despite what some may believe, the southeast is not dominated by religious radio station. Well, I can speak for Alabama, Florida and Georgia. I did have an experience driving to Arkansas years ago. The entire trip through Mississippi was nothing but doomsday prophecy on the radio.

Auburn has a good college station. It is 91.1 and you can usually pick it up in the Montgomery area.

    • Specifically Alabama and Mississippi.  Assuming I don't get blown away  by a tornado, I'll be in Mobile, Montgomery, Tupelo, Oxford, Vicksburg  and Biloxi starting April 29.  It looks a little sparse as far as rock goes so please give me some pointers for fun clubs, record stores, bars, cafes.  And if  there are any good radio stations as I drive from place to place so I'm not stuck with Christian stuff.  I can always turn on the iPhone and listen too but would be nice to find local college stations, or even decent classic rock.  Got a feeling they're few and far between.  Feel  free to email joanie@wmbr.org.  Thanks.

    • Earth transmission to human drummers. The Memphis Morticians are in need of a new fulltime drumming carbon unit. Must be into punk rock, garage and the 'billy music and be willing to listen to terrible jokes and conspiracy theories. Pay and glory are minimal. Send an email to thememphismorticians[at]gmail.com

    • Hey, the Joe Dirty tunes are my favorites so far, too.

Is this the same Joe Dirty from the Dirtys (from Port Huron)?

      I love that band.

Looks like you guys have just about everything covered.  Check out www.beehiverecording.com, free downloads. A friend and veteran of the detroit garage rock scene, Steve Nawara, recently started this recording company.  A particular favorite of mine is The Joe Dirty Show.

    • Thanks, Stacy Ann, for sharing the Beehive site. There are some great bands on there (and who doesn't love free downloads of non-crappy music?).

You're right, though, in that we've pretty-well covered just about everything.

Now, we'd wind up going down the road that the Boss Mustangs did and start naming "smaller" and/or "newer" Detroit bands that haven't quite blazed a huge wake yet. We could compile a huge list of these great Detroit bands.

The Ruiners and Bad Indians are two good ones from Mustangs' list that I agree put out some very cool music in the GP vein (plus, both bands reside in my little town of Ypsilanti quite often: the town Iggy Pop grew up in).

There's loads of rock happening here!  The Bottom of the Hill, The Independent, Slim's, the Warfield and the Eagle Tavern, just to name a few.  Be certain to check the calendar for each bar (especially The Eagle Tavern), so you know who is comin' through town or playing to suit yer mood.  I believe the Eagle Tavern can be quite good on Thursday nights, but again, double check in advance each club's calendar/schedule.
