    • Mastering is as important as any other step in the recording process-and by all means-BE THERE WHEN YOU MASTER IT-if you can...or send it to someone who understands the music you're playing and won't fuck with the vibe...mastering just takes whatever you did-that you like-makes it EVEN-each song-as every song-even though you recorded for instance 12 songs the same way-same sessions-each song is at a slightly different level, because when you mix each song, you may get a great vibe, but then notice that some songs aren't as loud -which is normal-then mastering just levels it all out-brings out the best tonal quality. I remember when a friend didn't master his album-and you had to turn up certain songs-this way you don't have to do that-

    • Fuzzfaces are great too if you can find one-I had a box of them back in the 70's--Hendrix used them a lot-and as I'd read above-you can't go wrong with a Big Muff-especially the silver and black ones from the 70's-there is an AMAZING one out in recent years-out of Japan-called the "Venemous Snake"-sounds like 'Over Under Sideways Down' Jeff Beck--I might be spelling 'Venamous' wrong-can't remember how it was on the fuzz-I used one awhile ago

Totally agree: play a song in whatever key works best.  It's not always what's best for the singer, either.

      Case in point:

When THEE DIRTYBEATS covered The 13th Floor Elevators' "Fire Engine", we did it "B".

Now, the original version, in "E", is very cool;  but we really admired the intro Television added (see their 1978 live album "Blow Up"), with that insane chromatic chordal build.  And Television's version was in "Bb".

As we worked up the song in Bb, we found a terrifically vicious downslash effect could be achieved on the I-IV transition if the IV chord was actually an open E rather than a barred F.  So we transposed the song again, this time *up* a half-step, from Bb -> B.

You can hear that guitar downslash at 0:54 (it's wonderfully noisy, if you're into that sort of thing) at http://theedirtybeats.bandcamp.com/track/fire-engine.  Changing the IV to E also freed Jamie to add a soaring thing to his fuzz solo.  While the higher key forced me out of my comfort zone as singer, it kept me on edge and reaching, which for a highly charged rock performance isn't necessarily a bad thing.

We similarly fooled with "Shape Of Things To Come", originally recorded in F# by Max Frost & The Troopers.  We did it in E, because my guitar solo just fell out that way.

    • .... I WONDER WHO PRODUCED IT. I KNOW , THAT PAVLOV'S DOG THING TELLS US TO SAY , "JACK WHITE, OF COURSE !".....KIDDING ASIDE , I HAVE HEARD "THE WEIRDNESS" , ONCE. I DID'NT TOTALLY HATE IT , BUT , I HAD TO ASK , IS IT THAT THE SONGS ARE'NT THERE? WELL , THE SONGS WERE'NT FULLY DEVELOPED ON THEIR DEBUT , EITHER. THEN , I HAD TO WONDER ABOUT STEVE ALBINI. I MEAN , HE PRODUCED A FEW ALBUMS I LIKED (FLESHTONES "LABORATORY OF SOUND " , THE MENTALLY ILL "SPANK THE BOTTOM RED" .e.g.) , BUT HOW DOES ONE PRODUCE ANY STOOGES ALBUM FEATURING RON FUCKING ASHETON ON GUITAR......with no guitar solos on it ? Is it just me? Did you guys hear any? Now it's too late to get Ron to dub some on....It is'nt too late to have Deniz Tek dub some solos on Radio Birdman's "Zero Beach". I don't think.

It's true what Iggy says , this is a BAND. Anyone who's seen this lineup knows they came to work their balls off.......So , if that same energy can be , somehow , contained in the studio , great , I'm all for it.  Nice shot at Smashing Pumpkins , BTW.

    • Hey all-Just so you all know-it is not sad or a shame about the band being over-I ENDED IT BECAUSE IT WAS TIME TO MOVE ON-It had a good run-some good times & Bad times-but time to move on, ya know??? I am TOTALLY INTO MY OWN TRIP RIGHT NOW AND WOULD NEVER TURN BACK-THIS IS WHERE IT IS AT FOR ME-my new album "MIssissippi Murderer" is EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO SOUND LIKE--AND=all this stuff about the Cynics and the C. Kings on the warpath-let me set this straight-I AM AND HAVE BEEN FRIENDS WITH GREGG KOSTELICH OF THE CYNICS/GET HIP and the CYNICS for decades-NEVER any kind of bad vibes-so whoever is making up this bullshit it is UNTRUE. Got it? As far as me being an asshole-no idea why anyone would make that accusation because I was never rude or nasty to anyone. And the "I've heard stories from a former drummer of the Cynics that the CKs can be real assholes, especially Gregg Prevost" is just heresay,

....I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue....I also forgot to menton "Come , Now". The "Archaeology" 2 CD set (3 counting the infamous "Troggs Tapes" in full) on Rhino will set you  on the right road. I'm sure you'll have to look for it on line , but , it would'nt hurt to contact Rhino regarding it's availability(?). I don't think.

I just found out The Troggs are still touring Europe , minus Lead Singer Reg Presley , who's recovering from treatment for Lung Cancer , and has since retired. It's on their website (Tho' not much else , info - wise.) ....The new guest vocalist put in some time with a later version of The Animals , and some other revamped UK 60's groups.....It can't be The Troggs without Reg , but  , I'm sure he  gave them his blessings .

      ***ACID BABY JESUS (Athens, Greece)***

Devastating psych-garage mess! A Mediterranean concoction of two of our favorite "Black" bands (Sabbath/ Lips), ABJ represents the future of heavy psych'n'roll from an isolated, ancient civilization. Combining the ruthless elements of American outlaw roots music and celestial glam rock... their debut LP also suggest the Rolling Stones at their wearied best, with the electrifying hi-jinks of Brian Eno bulldozing the swagger into the darkest corners of the cosmos.

      ***HELLSHOVEL (Here and there)***

The Slovenly posse is trying to wrap our brains around this warped debut LP / CD called “Hated By The Sun” by Canadian bumpkin punks HELLSHOVEL (aka Hell Shovel). Led by Demon’s Claws frontman Jeff Clarke, and featuring Dox Grillo sharing the strings / vox duties, with Bloodshot Bill (TANDOORI NIGHTS / DING DONGS / swarthy one man band LEGEND who makes an effortless transition on the drums from his [un]usual wild man rockabilly fare), “Hated By The Sun” is the sound of Johnny Cash drowning in a pool of cough syrup - a gooey reminder of the most irradiated moments of Demon’s Claws poisonous choo-choo train shamble. A swank, full color gatefold jacket houses the wax. CD comes in a most classy 6-panel Digipak.

    • I wish I could sell out so I didn't have to have a shit 9 to 5. Who hasn't compromised at some point through their career.

    • February 25, 2013 12:11 AM CST
    • I remember when the Flaming Lips did Strychnine.  They were weird but my kind of weird.  Personally, I think they DID sell out.  People think they got better but I think they got boring.  I thought Soundgarden got boring as well, but I didn't hate them like I hated Flaming Lips. I never did like Smashing Pumpkins.  Pesonally, I was surprised by the whole Nirvana thing.  I didn't ever get my hands on the Butch Vig demos (which really weren't demos as they were supposed to be a 2nd Sub Pop album, they just sound like demos in comparison as they were done on the cheap)that they were doing like my friends had, so I never heard the songs until after the album actually came out.  The live songs I did hear in early 91 were the songs you heard on the second half of NEVERMIND (side 2?).  So yeah, I was surprised.
