One of my all-time favorites!
NEW ALBUM RELEASE
ZOUNDS
‘THE CURSE OF ZOUNDS’
Label: Overground
Cat. No. OVER 142LP Barcode: 689492158620
Release Date: 26th January 2015
Zounds formed in Reading in 1977 releasing their first single Can’t Cheat Karma on Crass Records in 1980. This early association with Crass meant they were key figures in the bourgeoning anarcho-punk scene along with The Mob, Poison Girls, Flux of Pink Indians and many others.
Moving to Rough Trade Records the band released their first album The Curse of Zounds in 1982, recording and mixing the LP within five days. The cover art, by anarchist artist Clifford Harper, featured a painting of fire fighters apparently trying to put out a blaze at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. However, the picture continued onto the back cover, which showed that in fact they are spraying the fire with petrol, thus feeding it.
Someone must have slipped one of those post-anarcho-syndicalist pamphlets in with these guys' Beano comics! This is sturdy, above-average English pop-punk with some surprisingly infectious hooks. But the foursome ain't just disaffected youngsters lookin' for a kiss (or any ol' white riot) - they're searching out the meaning of life in the post-industrial capitalist system. As long as you've got the tunes, fellas - go for it! – Trouser Press
The album is now seen as a classic of the genre and one of the most inspirational albums of the post-punk period.
This is a limited pressing of 500 only on white vinyl, which closely reproduces the cover, inner bag and labels of the original.

Radio What Wave Playlist January 29/2015 Part 3 of The Last Pogo Jumps Again Radio Special
1. The Demics....New York City...live version from The Cedar Lounge and appropriate as this song plays during the opening credits of The Last Pogo Jumps Again.
2. Arson....Pretty Girls...from Smash The State Volume 1. This complilation LP was put out on Last Exit Records, the label that Frank Manley created to put out 70's Canpunk. Frank Manley wrote the book, Smash The State, which is a discography of the Canpunk scene....records only, no cassettes or CD's. The book came out in the very early 90's, a box of them came to London Ontario, which we sold at the record shows here. Many of the first press ended up in Germany as the vinyl collectors there were heavily into North American 70's punk at the time. Rumours there could be a second edition of the book have proven false so far as many corrections/additions have been submitted. Oh ya, Arson were from Toronto, released a 7" (the following 2 songs) and this particular track is a demo. Arson have reformed in recent years and put on an early 80's Stooge like affair. Ain't nothing wrong with that!
3. Arson...Coho Coho...from their only 7". Trivia, they were the first Toronto punk band i ever saw, probably summer 1978. At that point, i truly believed that London punk bands were superior to Toronto's!
4. Arson...White Folks....the flipside of the above 7".
5. The Government....Hemingway Hated Disco....1979 7" and the first by The Government. A band out of step with trends as they were into video and incorporated this into their live show well before MTV had been conceived in a board room. They released at least 2 singles, a 12" and 2 LP's, all of which still give me a boner to this day.
6. The Government....Sleeping...from their second 7" and my intro to the band. Still vividly remember hearing them for the first time on 6X, the radio station of Fanshawe College when they were the very first in this area to play new wave/punk rock! Drastically changed my record buying and listening habits! As far as i know, The Government never made it to London Ontario, and finally got to see them in late 1981 at the Spadina Hotel. It was a major disappointment, as by this time, the band had evolved into a 4 piece and were mere shadows of the vision created in my mind via their records.
7.B-Girls....B Side...Bomp single. All girl new wave band who in later years featured Londoner Marcy Saddy on the kit. This is a band that coulda and shoulda as Bomper Greg Shaw was rumoured to have an LP in the can and waiting for the right time to release it. Never happened as Greg may have misfiled it amongst his bazillions of records or it may have just been another rumour....asked him about it many years ago and never did get a proper response. B-Girls did go on to open for The Clash a time or 2, when it mattered!
8. Martha And The Muffins....Paint By Number Heart....from a 7", but also on their first LP. Martha and The Muffins were around right from the beginning, but didn't release anything until 1980. Echo Beach blasted out of radios everywhere and the band went on to fame.
9. Tyranna....Back Off Baby....from a Boppa Do Down 7" that came out a few years ago. Tyranna never released any records (but were on at least one compilation) during their lifespan, but this 7" and later, a full LP on Rave Records brought them the fame they deserved.
10. Battered Wives....Uganda Stomp....from a 7" and probably their most known song as it was played here on CHRW and 6X back in it's day. Battered Wives had issues with their name and femininists who arrived carrying placards to some shows.
11. Battered Wives...Pass Out....from a 7". Battered Wives shortened their name to Wives to appease the critics. They also got to open for Elvis Costello in the fall of 1978 when he played Alumni Hall here in London Ontario....stupidly i did not go as it wasn't punk enough for me!!!
12. Forgotten Rebels....National Unity....from their 1978 12". Hamilton's bad boys have been around since day 1 and Mikey's got the scars and stories to prove it! A Canadian punk institution as these guys (and i'm using guys lightly, as this band has gone through dozens of members) have played everywhere in Canada to appreciative audiences. It's a rite of passage for so called punks in Canada to see the Forgotten Rebels.
13. Forgotten Rebels....You're A Rebel Too....from a 1978 cassette released by the band. One time when the Rebels (that's what fans call them...hahaha) were playing The Cedar Lounge in London, Mikey was asking me why the turnout was unusually low for them as it was a weekend. I said that Carl Perkins was up the street playing Fryfogles, and many of my friends were there. Mikey proceeded to give me shit for coming to see his band and not going to see Carl Perkins, a real rock'n'roll legend. And Mikey was right!!
Big thanx for the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!! And thanx for tuning in and reading this glob!!
Next week, we're taking a break from the Last Pogo Series of Radio Specials and we've got a live to air happening next week. We've got Lionel Lodge and his London Ontario band playing live over the airwaves sometime between 6 and 7:30 PM. It's gonna be great!!
And don't forget, it's The Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening sunday at APK, 3PM bell time and Lionel Lodge and Jeffy B are going to start the show with a bang!! Lionel currently lives in Vienna Austria, and is visiting for a short time only, so try and catch the show. And as always, The Mongrels will be headlining, doing 2 rock solid rock'n'roll sets!! See ya there on sunday.

Radio What Wave Playlist Jan 22/2015 Part 2 of our special on The Last Pogo Jumps Again w/Colin Brunton
1. The Demics....New York City....original version as that's what is playing when the intro credits roll on The Last Pogo Jumps Again.
2. The Viletones....Look Listen Learn....1978 live recording from The Colonial in Toronto. Bootleg cassette quality, but where else you gonna hear this?
3. The Viletones....Screaming Fist...as above. And as Leckie says at the intro, this is the first live appearance of what was to become a Viletones standard.
Right about here we had Colin Brunton via the batphone to talk about the making of both the original Last Pogo and the just released on DVD The Last Pogo Jumps Again. Lots of trivia and Colin told the entire story with little prompting on my part. A true pro!! If only more interviews weren't this easy!!
4. The Viletones...Just For You...from A Taste Of Honey CD on OPM Records. Also mentioned the London Ontario connection w/Peter Moore doing the behind the scenes sound wizardry. And another London connection w/Jan Haust as OPM is/was his label.
5. The Ugly....No Place To Go...from the Disorder CD on OPM. Once again Peter Moore worked his wizardry. The Ugly were the real deal, no gangs to fight their battles and lead singer Mike Nightmare spent a fair bit of his life on the wrong side of the jail door.
6. The Ugly...Revenge...as above.
7. The Ugly....Stranded In The Laneway....from a 7" on Explosion Records. This is later material and much poppier than above.
8. Nash The Slash....Fever Dream...from the Bedside Companion 12" on Cut Throat Records. Nash played London many times and his brother ran the Madrigal, a classical music record store here in town for many years.
9. Bob Segarini....Gotta Have Pop...from the LP of the same name. One of my fave powerpop LP's from Toronto from this era. Bob came into the scene with loads of experience as he had recorded LP's with The Wackers and The Dudes. He helped many of the Toronto bands of the era behind the scenes.
10. Bob Segarini....Teenage Love...this was broadcast on Q107 11/10/1978 and later became an LP on Bomb Records, an important label in the Toronto and area scene.
11. The Scenics...Do The Wait...from the Protospunk download recorded long before they released any records. 3 piece art/damaged rock combo out of Toronto who didn't sound like any other band from this area. Almost protopunk, these guys were ahead of their time and appreciated later.
12. The Scenics...O Boy....from the Last Pogo CD.
13. The Secrets...Suzi Peroxide....from the Teenage Damage CD on OPM Records. This is basically The Viletones without Leckie and the addition of Diode John Hamilton. These guys were doing 60's fratrock/doowop/garage and shoulda been big but drugs and other things just didn't let it happen.
14. The Secrets...I'll Cry Tomorrow....as above. This one has an absolute killer bass run! One of my fave Toronto combos from this era.
15. The Poles...CN Tower...from their only 7" and a killer song that blows away everything else they released.
16. The Cads...Do The Crabwalk...from a 7" on BI-R Records from 1978.
17. Cardboard Brains....Caesar Drives A Fast Car....from a 12' on Guilt Records. They also released a 7" and a live LP recorded at The Edge, the club that took over from where The Horseshoe left off band/sound wise. Again, promoted by The Garys.
18. The Mods....Step Out Tonight....from their only 7". There is also a CD on OPM Records that is recommended if you are a fan. Drummer David Quinton later released a solo LP and joined a later version of The Dead Boys, before joining Stiv Bators for some of his early solo recordings. David is now a very important entertainment lawyer in Toronto. In The Last Pogo Jumps Again, he's interviewed in his office, way up in the clouds!
That's a wrap for this week's edition. Thanx for all the crazy phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!! And a HUGE thanx goes out to Colin Brunton for calling in to yammer about the documentary. And thanx to his dog for being patient as the interview coincided with his daily walk!!
Back again next week for Part 3 of The Last Pogo Jumps Again Special as we play some more Toronto combos, probably starting with one of my faves, The Government and carrying on with Arson, Martha and The Muffins, B Girls (remember that name!!), Tyranna and lots more.

Steve Terrell informed me that the Savages /DMZ Guitar Player's name is Peter Greenberg.
I knew that , but I was thinking about somebody else. Honest.
Google sonicstour.2015 - The dates are all listed there. "Bad Betty" is BAAAAAAAAD ! The other proposed album cuts they were doing on the last tour were pretty tuff , too , inc. a savage romp on Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor" , and new originals that did'nt dissapoint.
Also, here's a new track from their forthcoming LP:
https://soundcloud.com/the-sonics/bad-betty
What are the tour dates/cities?
The Sonics have just announced a major US tour in Spring 2015. APRIL 2 - APRIL 26.
Most of the major Northern markets are covered , but , it seems the only concession to The South will be the two day Viva Las Vegas Massacre (The Sonics , the only Garage band latter - day Rockabilly fans seem to recognize , are doing two full sets at The Viva Las Vegas festival . That's great , but , lovin' Rockabilly and not lovin' Garage is like lovin' your Daddy and not your Mama.).
Better still , most tour dates will be supported by primo screamer , Barrence Whitfield , and the original Savages (Featuring Mark Greenburg , original DMZ Guitarist.), whie Mudhoney opens the first date.
If you've never seen Barrence Whitfield and The Savages , or , even if you have , they will blow your shit away , and , then , of course , The Sonics will give ya some more , like it's 1964 !
Any kid bands wanna get their blocks knocked off by guys their Grandfathers' age ? I did'nt think so.
Ticket info and tour schedule info are at Consequence of Sound (Google the sonics. 2015 tour , or cosequenceofsound , should be right there.). The Sonics' website is still being rehabbed , so check with consequence of sound. I don't know who's handling the tickets , or how badly we're going to get reamed in "Service charges" , much less what ticket prices are gonna be ,, but , if you're in Chicago , they go on sale FRIDAY , JANUARY 23 !! Possibly some other shows , too. Look it up.
While you're doing that , check out "BAD BETTY" from the upcoming full - length Sonics release.
I met Larry Parypa , briefly. He told me the new album (Then in production.) sounded , to him , like a cross between teh original Sonics and 70's Hard Rock. Not necessarily a bad thing , but , "Bad Betty" sounds like early Sonics meets DMZ/Real Kids !!
Ain't nobody pressing vinyl anymore?
Yes, I am also wondering the same thing: if I wanted to do a small batch, what places are highly recommended? Thanks!
I'm looking at pressing a 45 rpm in the near future (late Spring). I noticed that Palomino Records seems to have a good package deal for small runs (I'm looking at either 200 or 250 copies). Has anybody here used Palomino? Do you have any recommendations record pressing plants? Also, any recommendations on good places to get a "vinyl ready" mix of our master tape. I'm in the Washington, DC metro area.
Thanks.
Cool. Well , I hope he'll talk a bit about Dust in his book , too. I've met Marky twice , and he's a standup guy. He told me all about his whole history with Dust , Wayne County , Richard Hell , and , of course , his two stints with The Ramones. Damn ! I wish I could have recorded it. I was'nt expecting him to tell me all this stuff , but , he was just relaxing before the show , in a good mood. He also told me he loved Rock'n'Roll TV shows like "Shindig" and "Where The Action Is".. He LOVES Paul Revere and The Raiders.
I was in touch with him , a little bit , until Dee Dee died. He was'nt taking calls , I guess , unless they were business - related.
Marky Ramone may not be the last surviving member of the Ramones (he shares that honor with Richie, C.J. and even the short-lived Elvis Ramone), but he is the last man standing to play with the group in their 1970s heyday and he lasted far longer in the band than any of his fellow survivors. His new book, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life As a Ramone, tells his whole crazy story, from his early days on the CBGB scene as the drummer in Richard Hell & the Voidoids to taking over for Tommy Ramone in 1978 through getting booted from the band for substance abuse issues to his eventual rehiring. Along the way, he played on classic tracks like "I Want to Be Sedated," witnessed countless scenes of madness and acted in the classic film Rock 'n' Roll High School. In the 11th chapter, he writes about the group's tumultuous 1979 recording sessions with Phil Spector.
Here is an exclusive excerpt:
IVY IS JUST LAYING LOW , BUT , REPORTEDLY , DOING REALLY WELL.
She has dropped out of the music biz (Except , I trust , overseeing reissues and such.). She's turned down offers to perform. But , who's to say she won't return , someday? She's an Artist. A real Artist may go through long periods of inactivity , only to return with some of their most brilliant work.
She can't be pressured into performing or recording again , and I'm sure people have been cool with her about that. I spoke to Art Fein (Who was The Cramps' First Manager.) and Kid Congo , and they both said she was in really good spirits , and looking great.
I miss The Cramps so much , too , but , it's like they're always here with me. I just can't go see them play , anymore. But , some bands really stand the test of time. THEY GIVE YOU FEVER !!
Speaking of the Cramps, what's Poison Ivy been up to? Has she completely left the music biz since Lux past? I do miss the Cramps.
BROJAMES ! i HAVE'NT SEEN YOU AROUND IN A WHILE.
Glad you liked the story . It's sad , but , he was in a lot of pain for a long time.
I know he announced that he hoped to get out of the hospital , soon , and marry his Girlfriend/ Caretaker, but , he must have known it would , most likely , not go that way , and I don't think he was afraid to face the end.
Thanks for sharing your memories of the late great Kim Fowley. I was so sad to hear that he past. He will be missed.
