Just been down Greenwich market and bought a couple a cd,s from the record stall there and they stock 60s garage, beat, psych, freakbeat, soul and lots of other stuff, they are opening a shop at 320 - 322 creek road.it sounds like it might be a worthwhile trip, its opening on the 23rd february, it makes a change to hear of a decent independant record shop being opened instead of always hearing about them closing.

do you know of any gigs in early march (i just realized i wrote "may" in the original post--oops!)? the only thing i found was silver apples at nouveau casino, but it's 22 euros...! we're into garage, power pop, punk (but not hardcore), glam, ultrachicks ye-ye, rockabilly, some psychobilly...

Depends what kind of band you want to see. If it's small, indie ones, it's best to check their websites directly, if it's bigger acts, I usually book my seats directly with the venue.

What type bands would you be interested in catching ?

Wow, under 10 Euros is really pushing it if you want a menu, your best bet would be the ubiquitous vietnamese places that also do take-away (there's one on every corner, and the food is edible, good, even;). You may be able to find a cheap couscous near your place in Bagnolet as well (I don't know the area). I'll ask around and see what I can come up with.

In Montmartre, there's a café restaurant I really like (I love their lasagne, but they have more French stuff as well), but they are more in the 20 Euros range : it's called Un Zèbre à Montmartre, 38 rue Lepic, 18e. In Le Marais, I love the (very filling and delicious) sandwiches and jewish food at Sasha Finkelstein on rue des Rosiers (4e), not to be missed.

cool! i think we're staying in bagnolet, but we'll be out and about in the usual spots (bastille, le marais, montmartre, etc.). ideally, we'd like to find french cafes/restaurants that offer good lunch/dinner menus/formules for under 10 euros. is that possible?

I live in Paris so I may be able to give you a few pointers. As far as record stores go, I do most of my shopping online but I do love the PARIS JAZZ CORNER : they stock great vinyls/cds/dvds, not only jazz, but also funk and various types of music (no punk garage stuff though, but if you're into black us music, it's fabulous). As far cheap eats go, I'd have to know which area you'll be staying in, what kind of food you like to eat ... and what you call 'cheap' ;) !

Hello everybody,

With a little bit of pain in our heart we've got to tell you there's not gonna be a Rotterdam Rumble this year. Since we're both very busy with our work and some personal matter it seems impossible for us to put up a festival that consumes so much time and energy and asks for so much responsibility. This doesn't automatically mean we'll stop with the Rumble for good. There are still a whole lotta bands out there that should've played the Rumble, so who knows maybe we'll be back some time in the future.

For now we would like to thank everyone who helped us out in the past and all the people who partied with us. You all made it a great trip which we fully enjoyed and truly cherish.

Thee Strawberry Mynde had their first rehearsal on Wednesday (13th February) after a break of 10 years at Lorne Street Studios in Middlesbrough. The band were a little rusty to start off with as you can expect having to relearn songs which they hadn't played since 1998. But things seemed to go pretty well and Tall Paul, Ian Lowes & Bazza are booked into Lorne Street Studios again next week.

For all you train spotters out there the songs the band ran through were - 'She Sets The Scene', 'The Difference', The Electric Prunes 'Little Olive', Love's 'My Flash On You' and The Shambles 'I Can't, Don't Want To'. As well as working on one or two others.

Huzzah! and Hooray!

I just posted this rant as a reply to another discussion but I need some clear answers about the Sonics gigs in London. The Latest news is that The Sonics at the Forum Friday 21st of March is sold out. A second show has been added on Sunday the 23rd at the Forum with The Horrors. Now the thing is...if I buy a weekend ticket now will I be automatically buying a ticket for Sunday? Will my weekend ticket, bought now, get me into the Sonics after-party on Friday? What about the scheduled gig on Sunday with the Phantom Keys and Jaybirds? Will I miss that if the Sonics are playing at the same time?? The New Untouchables website is really a mess! To find any clear information you have to read and cross reference every page! The ticket outlet that they have linked to their site doesn't even state that the Friday Sonics show is sold out. You can easily give your credit card info and buy a ticket for a sold out show on that day! Any clear new information would be great. Thanks.

Check out their history below! Our saga begins a long, long time ago in a country far, far away... Before there was any British Invasion, all rock 'n' roll gushed from the primordial ooze of America. This is the story of a group from that era and how their songs collided with the land of suicide princesses, razor blades and midnight sun. In the summer of 1955, 12-year-old Mike Brassard entered a movie theatre in Northfield, Vermont to watch a movie called "Blackboard Jungle." As the opening credits rolled, the youth was flabbergasted to experience the first wholly authentic slice of rock 'n' roll this planet has ever known: "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley & The Comets. Brassard left the theatre in a daze and pedaled his bike furiously around town, looking for empty soda bottles that he could return for deposit money so he could purchase another movie ticket to hear the revelatory tune again. Within a week, Brassard took up the guitar and set to penning all originals. Brassard’s best friend, Steve Blodgett, began playing rhythm guitar and writing with their new band, Mike & The Throbs, in 1960. Two years later, the group morphed into Mike & The Ravens, an act focused on the songwriting talents of the duo. The Ravens, a legendary pre-Beatles garage unit, signed to Empire Records in Plattsburgh, NY. The quintet played at Rollerland and other exotic venues like The Saxony and released three 45s - all originals - between April '62 & January '63. The group disbanded when rhythm guitarist Stephen Blodgett, bassist Brian Lyford and drummer Peter Young broke into the Stowe Community Church and played a rock 'n' roll LP over the steeple carillion system at midnight, a feat for which the threesome went to jail. Throughout the remainder of the '60s, Blodgett and Brassard recorded 45s for RCA Victor, Compass Records and Decca. Blodgett continued writing throughout the '70s and '80s, eventually compiling a back catalog that numbers in the hundreds. Meanwhile, one generation removed and an ocean away, Salla Kiehelä began playing Farfisa organ with Helsinki fave raves Branded Women. Their debut album, "Velvet Hours – Stolen Moments," took top honors at the Femma Awards, with the band being named Best New Comers of 2005. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to last and by 2006 the band was on its last legs. Across The Pond, American producer/raconteur/journalist Will Shade (who has also worked with überbeat myths The Monks and psychedelic luminaries like The Yardbirds and Electric Prunes) had reconvened Mike & The Ravens for their first full length album, reuniting the band for the first time in 45 years at one of their old stomping grounds, The Saxony in Rouses Point, NY. In the interim, Shade had discovered the music of Branded Women. Serendipity! Summer 2006: Kiehelä was brought together with Brassard and Blodgett by Shade. She left her remote northern country, fated to find the ruins of Rollerland and The Saxony, where she lost her heart to the amazing songs these guys had written - all of which were unreleased and gathering dust in a drawer for the last four decades... Summer 2007: Kiehelä returned to The Saxony, where she sang backing vocals on the new Mike & The Ravens album, "Balderdash! The Saxony Sessions." There was no doubt a new era had begun in her life. Upon returning to Finland, she decided to form a band with and around Brassard and Blodgett. The woman abandoned her customary role as organ player, wielding a lead singer's microphone, garnering comparisons with Marianne Faithfull and Suzanne Vega. Knocked out by the quality of the songs and Kiehelä’s voice, Finland's finest guitarist Timo Vikkula (think Shadowplay, Kauko Röyhkä etc.) volunteered his services as did Kevin front-man Ville Särmä, who took the drummer's chair in the new group. Kiehelä’s childhood pal, Esa Jussila, was drafted in on bass and the foursome set about capturing the magic of Brassard and Blodgett’s material, some of which were unreleased gems from the ‘60s as well as new tunes specifically penned for the group, dubbed Them Bird Things. Them Bird Things is that rarest of species: 100 years of authentic and unsullied American songwriting as performed by some of Finland's most beloved musicians. See them soon!
