    • So there was this show on IFC a few years ago called Dinner With the Band, that was half performance, half cooking. I saw the one with the Mountain Goats, but apparently there was a Murder City Devils episode and an Andrew W.K. episode too. I know Andrew W.K. isn't garagepunk, but I do appreciate his similarity to the Dictators. He's the next big thing!

Unfortunately it doesn't look like they have many videos of the cooking online, and it doesn't look like it's going to come back on anytime soon. you might be able to buy episodes on Amazon.

    • a friend of mine is a big Vampyr fan, so thats where i heard of it for the first time. He vastly prefers it to Nosferatu, and demanded that i check it out, haha.
also, that's quite the fun fact about the guy that played the golem...interesting...

I actually have not seen The Golem, though I've been meaning to for a while. I appreciate the link, which saves me the effort of the search. I've been checking out some old documentaries, as well. I watched Nanook of the North (which has been said to be the first actual documentary film) a couple weeks ago and it was pretty damn cool.

Probably old news to you....but for my money, the original "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" and "The Golem" are hard to beat...

    • "Where's Poppa" - Carl Reiner (Dir.) Ruth Gordon , George Segall , cameo by Rob Reiner (Who may LOOK like The Meathead , but , is foaming at the mouth PISSED!). EVEN SHORTER , NONEXISTANT Cameo BY PENNY MARSHALL. Garrett Morris as a member of a very well - dressed group of muggers.

Had'nt seen this movie in years , but , it is FU - UUU - UUUUNNNNN- EEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Ruth Gordon turns in , possibly , as even better performance than in "Harold and Maude" as the crazy old widow , making her two sons' lives Hell , though , it's hard to tell , sometimes , if her delusions are real of just a put - on. Segall , her one unmarried Son , and therefore , her Guardian , is crawling up the walls, until he (Rather quickly) falls in love with his Mom's new caretaker. He then conspires to put her in a home , which is a word he can't even say.

Santo Contra Magia Negra (Santo Vs. Black Magic) MEXICO , 1973 (?)

This is one of the best Santo movies I've seen . No , seriously....Santo is sent to Haiti on a secret mission to prevent a crime ring from successfully constructing the most powerful bomb on earth.....Which , there won't be much to the earth if their plans go through. The majority of the movie is filmed in Haiti , presumably in or around Port Au Prince.

There's a fantastic parade that makes an ass out of the Mardi Gras , and what appears to be a real Voodoo ceremony (Probably an approximation of one , performed under the guidance of elder members of the Voodoo church , as certain rituals were surely forbidden to be photographed.), are only some of the visual treats in store , along with a great "Psicodelico" (Psychedelic) sequence involving Santo himself , and two great Lucha Libre matches  (Santo had long since retired from the ring in real life  , but , now in his early 50's, he remains in great shape , and able to perform some of his best moves , including jumping off a post and landing on his opponent ,  still a very popular stunt , today.).

Santo , aided by a practitioner in White Magic (Who happens to be Black.) goes to war against an evil Voodoo Priestess , who spaecializes in Black Magic (And happens to be White.), AND HAS SWORN TO ASSIST SANTO'S ENEMIES IN making their dream of world destruction ( Or, one Hell of a bartering tool between The US , China and Russia.) a reality. People mysteriously die and , under the Witches' power , become zombies. NOT radioactive , gut - munching "Zombies" , but , zombies CREATED BY MAGIC , as per the African and Haitian legend. Santo and his friends have their hands full , fighting goons , thugs , zombies and the everpresent Black Magic. It's one of his more serious films , despite what may sound like a silly premise. The photography is splendid (As in "El Mafia Vicio" , a Santo vehicle shot a couple of years earlier  ,in still - stunning Acapulco.) , and the recurring electric guitar music (Not exactly Rock'n'Roll ) is fantastic.

    • .........i saw a little bit of the Green Hornet MOVIE ( THE RECENT ONE , WHICH , I TRUST , FLOPPED. Not the one culled from TV episodes to cash in on Bruce Lee's posthumous popularity.), A LITTLE WAS ALL I NEEDED. I did'nt bother with The Spirit MOVIE , FIGURING IT'D BE AS BAD , OR WORSE. On that note , I'd still love to see a LLOYD LLEWELLYN movie. Dan Clowes said he had some offers , but all by shysters and clueless fucks , like MTV , who wanted to cast somebody from The Pet Shop Boys as Lloyd's partner , Ernie , for a 1/2 hour series. At least , FINALLY , he was able to do Ghost World and Art School Confidential.

The latter does'nt have a very good rep , I liked it fine , but it's only occasionally hilarious ( The male model , anyone?) , whereas Ghost world is frequently hilarious.....Tho' I felt just like Steve Buscemi at the sports bar when I saw Dave "Honeyboy" Edwards , only the last of the real Bluesmen in one of his last shows , at the Ponderosa Stomp , and all these yuppies would NOT put a sock in it. These were the same types who overflowed the joint , the year before , because word got out that Bonnie Tyler might join Wanda Jackson onstage (She did'nt , mercifullly.). Fortunately , they left just in time for Roy Loney and Cyril Jordan's set. My friends and I were forced into a corner of the second balcony during Wanda's set. If I'd had to stay there for Roy and Cyril , HULK SMASH !!!!! That's what THAT has to do with comic books.

    • Andy, just saw the wagoon & pick up pics. Nice collection there. A bit embarassed to post pics after those. Here's a '62 Nova I've been pushing around since '85. Now officially my 18 year old son's car. So hopefully he will have the energy and time to make something of it.

I'll post a pic of my '59 Buick later.

    • Incredible! I envy people like you with that kind of ability. How did you fabricate the rear? I can kind of vaguely imagine chopping behind the b pillar and bringing things forward, but as the pic below, there is no "trunk" like that on a 4 door. Also, like on later cars, are the coupe's doors longer than a four door? I imagine they must be, and required stretching, which seems like a piece of cake compared to that rear. And just to illustrate what you did for everyone else, I posted a pic of a stock '34 4 door sedan and an unchopped (or slightly maybe) '34 5 window (2 door) coupe from a show last week.

    •  Mmm, sounds nice. And the um, 'wort time' is something like 5-to-6 hours on the stove?

      Hey, look what I found:

      Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
Good for you (or at least your mom)

Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

      The Beer

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is a great example of extra little 'something' that an adjunct can lend to a beer. The addition of flaked oats brings about a very smooth, satin-like texture and gives this beer a very pleasing, almost velvet mouth feel. The color, as expected, is almost opaque due to the 450L Chocolate malt. A smooth, subtly roast/caramel taste with a bittersweet finish. The East Kent Goldings hop addition serves as a nice, if not hidden, foundation to balance this beer perfectly.

      All Grain Recipe - Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout ::: 1.055/1.014 (5.5 Gal)
      Grain Bill (70% Efficiency assumed)

8 lbs. - 2 Row Pale Malt (UK if you have it, but whatever)
      1 lb. - Flaked Oats
      1/2 lb. - Crystal Malt (60L)
      1/2 lb. - Chocolate Malt
      1/4 lb. - Roasted Barley
      Hop Schedule (31 IBU)

      1.75 oz. - East Kent Goldings - 90 min.
      Yeast

White Labs Irish Ale Yeast (WLP004) - 1800 ml starter
      Mash/Sparge/Boil

Mash at 151° for 60 min.
      Sparge as usual
Boil for 90 minutes (remember to compensate your water)
Cool and ferment at 65° to 68°

If it looks as though I prefer sweet, malty beverages, you've hit the nail on the head. In the Pacific NW, this can be a bit of a challenge, as even in the winter, the hops are in effect!

Mmmalted Barley, it fills the air w/ good feelings. Yeah, I like the idea of experimenting w/ different amounts and ingredients. There was a story I heard years ago that said wherever Guinness set up a place, they had to use the local grain, so fer instance, when they hit a nation in Africa, they wound up using sorghum in the local Guinness. Probably not true, but it makes me curious as to the taste.

    • Yeah, there's A LOT you can do better by NOT following the instructions =)  More maltose, little or no dextrose, Champagne Yeast for stronger brews.  Keeping a log for each and every step you take will make sure you don't repeat mistakes.  Roasting your own barley is something you learn later, and it's not scary.  A cookie sheet and a broiler will do it.
