Radio What Wave Playlist August 18/2017
- Crankin’ With Elvis….Supreme Bagg Team….from Mr Garager’s Neighbourhood compilation from 1989 and the perfect way to start this show as Wednesday was the 40th anniversary of the death of The King.
- Elvis Presley….Heartbreak Hotel….live recording from 1956 and it gives you a bit of the idea of the craziness that surrounded any live performance by Elvis back then!
- Elvis Presley….Long Tall Sally…. As above.
- Elvis Presley….That’s All Right….Sun recording from January 1955. If it wasn’t for Elvis, Scotty Moore, Sam Phillips and Bill Black the world would have been a lot different musically and culturally! Teenagers flipped when they first heard Elvis!!
- Cowboy Project…. All Shook Up….local combo with Hayden Vialva (The Dice), Kevin Kardsley (The Kards) and others.
- Boy From Nowhere….King Creole….recorded live at Mortz’s according to the scrawl on the CD. Boy From Nowhere are still active and well worth checking out live if you ever get the chance! We’ve had them on Radio WW a couple of times for live to airs and each time has been a treat.
- Frank Ridsdale….Mystery Train….live recording from Radio WW 9/16/2010. Frank was a member of Uranus, the combo that was just inducted into the Jack Richardson London Music Hall of Fame this year! And he’s a member of The Stetson Brothers who gig around town quite a bit.
- Peter Singh….I’m on the Phone Elvis….1982 7” from the UK and the only Elvis tribute record by a Sikh I’ve ever seen! Lavender Sweep Records from the UK is currently working on a compilation of Peter Singh’s recordings and a possible documentary!
- Satan’s Cheerleaders with Vampira….Tribute To Elvis….1987 7” on the Living Eye Records imprint. Vampira is the actress who appeared in Plan 9 From Outer Space as well as some other flicks.
- Gun Club….For The Love Of Ivy…..from the Fire Of Love LP from 1981 with the classic refrain of “All dressed up like an Elvis from hell!!’ Remember reading about this record in NYRocker when it first came out and sounded like something that I would really dig!! Ran over to Records On Wheels (only record store in London that sold the punk/new wave records back then) and it’s been one of my fave records ever since! A few years later Gun Club played Mingles here in London, with Kid Congo on the git, Patricia Bagg on bass and not sure who drummed. It was packed, hot and sweaty and a fight broke out between some cat that does a show here on CHRW and Dougie Sinner that resulted in a bunch of people getting kicked out! Kid Congo was wearing a heavy black sweater with a huge skull on the front and someone from the crowd yelled, ‘Hey Kid, where’d you get the sweater?’ and Kid nonchalantly replied ‘my Mom knit if for me!’ There’s a coupla pics from this show in a long ago edition of What Wave zine. Jeffrey Lee Pierce came back to London a few years later to play at Bullwinkles, Deja Voodoo opened and this was the infamous wrestling on the dance floor show with some Legend Killers and others going at it. Jeffrey wasn’t very inspiring at this show, but Deja Voodoo sure got the wrestling going!
- Janice K….Teddy Bear….from Wave From The Grave, the cassette that came with What Wave zine #12 back in 1987. Janice became a famous Elvis interpreter, appearing on many television show, national magazines and even books!
- Pale Lips….Old Flame….from a brand new 7” from this all female combo outta Montreal.
- The Darts….Strange Days….from the soon to be released LP Me.ow, on Dirty Water Records out of the UK, but these gals are from LA and the west coast!
- Leadfoot Tea….Coronet Hemi….brand new 7” on Beluga Records out of Sweden and LT is a one man band.
- Bath Salts….Cool Like The Music….from their recent Mardi Gras CD and by request.
- Peter and the Wolves….Let Me See You Growl….from a live recording from this Calgary based rockabilly combo. They are scheduled for September 7th at the Richmond Hotel here in London.
- Pat Todd and the Rank Outsiders…Failure Is My Name….from a 7” on Beluga Records. Around this time I dedicated a set to Steve Bannon.
- 3 O’Clock Train….Stupid Little Angel….from the mid 80’s Wig Wam Beach LP. Singer Mack MacKenzie is scheduled for a live to air on next week’s edition of Radio WW. He will also be appearing locally at Fitzrays on Wednesday August 30th.
- Dave Rave…..Sweet American Music….from his latest LP, A Little Messed Up In Rock’n’Roll.
- Dany Laj and the Looks….Mr Screaming Attitude….from their latest release, Alive and Kicking and we sent this out to our pal Kerry Piper.
- The Judys….Genda Benda….from their self titled debut and from Vancouver.
- The Dahlmanns…..The Last Time….from their latest single on the Next Big Thing label out of Scotland and as they say on their website, ‘the best powerpop band on the planet’ and couldn’t agree more. This particular song was penned by Andy Shernoff and that’s him playing on it as well.
- Jill Porter….Just Ask….from her self titled CD and from 2005 and from Newfoundland.
- Scott Biram…..Judgement Day…..from the Something’s Wrong/We’re Lost CD and the start of a set to help me forget about the shit that’s going on in the world right now! Listen to the lyrics on this one and you’ll get where I’m coming from! Scott is appearing at This Ain’t Hollywood on Monday night.
- Noble Savages….I Don’t Wanna Be a Boy No More….from the recent Trouble Brewing CD and from Hamilton Ontario. This CD was released by Transistor 66 Records out of Winnipeg.
- The Subhumans….Mindless Tough Guy Act….from the New Dark Age Parade from a few years back and this little ska number sums up a lot of the shit that is going on now. The Subhumans played London back in 1981 and it was one of their best shows on their first and only cross Canada tour back then. Years later they reformed and played at Call The Office, energy intact and politically astute as ever!
- Cardboard Brains….Babys Run My World….from the Last Pogo Lp that was recorded at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto for the last day of punk/new wave combos. The show was documented in a movie, and then later in a full blown doc on the Toronto/Hamilton punk scene in The Last Pogo Jumps Again. Recommended if you have any interest in the early punk scene from this area. We had Colin Brunton Director/producer as a guest on Radio WW a few years back.
- Drastic Measures…Big Town Boy….from their self titled Lp from 1980 and they also played at the above mentioned Last Pogo. Art rock, but the message is still there!
- Last Poets…..This Is Madness….from the LP of the same name and one of the first rap records to be released, circa 1970. Sums up a lot of the shit going down today.
- Last Poets….When The Revolution Comes….from their self titled LP and a double shot of the Last Poets that probably lost us a few listeners. For those that kept listening, hope you could decipher some of these lyrics and relate them to our situation.
- Fela Kuti….Zombie….from the Lp of the same name and from 1975. One of my fave Fela Kuti songs and again, the lyrics say it all in so few words! Fela’s son Seun made an appearance at Sun Fest here in London a few years back and absolutely killed it!! Dancing for over an hour on solid concrete takes its toll on the body but worth every second!
- The Subhumans….I Got Religion….from the New Dark Age Parade Lp and had to play this as the next DJ was late arriving. Again, timely.
Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!
Back again next week with a live to air with Mack MacKenzie of 3 O’Clock Train fame!
