Radio What Wave Playlist October 29/2015

This was an all new show (with 2 exceptions) as so much cool new stuff has come out recently. And this is only the new stuff we've been exposed to, tons more hidden away waiting to be listened to.

1. The Mongrels...Do It....from their last Radio WW session. And they will  be playing at the monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening this sunday from 5 till 8PM at the Richmond Hotel in downtown London.

2. Dustbin Flowers...My Little World....brand new recording of this tune that's going to be on their next CD.

3. Hiroshima Hearts...14 Floors...from their debut CD which just happens to be number one on the CHRW Radio charts this week! Congrats to HH!!

4. 30 Helens...The Deep....from their recently released Vague Rants EP. Brand new local combo that features the bass player from Hiroshima Hearts.

5. M&M Meats... Runners Love....from the brand new Transistor 66 download to celebrate the 100th release on this Winnipeg based label. M&M are not associated with the food chain of the same name and come from Winnipeg.

6. The Zorgs...Milkshake....another track from the Transistor 66 download. The Zorgs also come from Winnipeg and the download is free from the T66 website.

7. The Ativans....Jump The Shark...as above, but this band comes from Calgary.

8. The Noble Savages....I Don't Wanna Be A Boy No More....from their brand new Four Off The Floor 7" on Transistor 66 Records. Hamilton based combo we've played many times on Radio WW!!

9. The Noble Savages...Lobotomy City.... as above. When this band first formed, our good pal and former Londoner Rob Munro (RIP) was on guitar.

10. Dynamite Pussy Club...Power....from their album that should be out next month....from Bath UK.

11. The Government...PhD on Beat....from a brand new 7" on FOLC Records out of Spain which is where this combo comes from. Not to be confused with the Canuck combo of the same name from the late 70's/early 80's.

12. The Government....Old New Age... as above.

13. Macumba Brothers....Preacher Man....from a brand new EP on FOLC Records and these guys are also from Spain!

14. The Trip Wires...Come On and Do The Swim....from We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records. West coast combo on this 7" compilation from Spain.

15. MFC Chicken....Study Hall....from the brand new Solid Gravy LP on Dirty Water Records from the UK. MFC are from the UK and have also just released a couple of singles on FOLC Records.

16. MFC Chicken...14 Girls.... as above.

17. Archie and the Bunkers...Sally Lou....from their brand new album on Dirty Water Records. Two teenage brothers from Cleveland that sound WAY beyond their age!!!

18. Flesh Rag...I Gotta Go....from the brand new Noise Pollution 7" EP on It's Trash Records. 4 song EP of all Hamilton combos.

19. Jimmy And The Jerks...Critical Mass, Critical Trash... as above. The Jimmy in this combo, is the same as Frankie and Jimmy, the blues duo we've played many times on Radio WW. And we had them do a live to air session back a couple months.

20. The Scenics...O Boy....from the brand new In The Summer CD on DreamTower Records. A remixing of recordings done back in 77/78. The Scenics were a Toronto based combo, who really didn't fit in with the rest of the punk/new wave combos of their time period. They were way more artier, but had a tough edge to their sound which doesn't sound dated at all.

22. Dead Beat Poets....In My Iron Lung....brand new 7" that features Frank Secich who played with Stiv Bators in The Dead Boys and Stiv's later powerpop bands.

23. Sons Of Mod....This Is Sound....from a soon to be released LP. Australian combo with lots of mod and garage influences.

24. Sons Of Mod....Ghost Train.... as above.

25. 63 Monroe....Bloodstains...from their recent Punk Rock Soldier CD. Recent recordings from this band that has been around longer than many of our listeners!

26. The Cramps....The Crusher....from the 12" EP of the same name. This goes out to Danny P and to everyone that celebrates Halloween.

27. Sonny Vincent....Faster Pussycat...from his brand new Bizarro Hymns on Get Hip Records.

This was an almost all vinyl show as the London Record Show is happening on Sunday Oct 25th at Centennial Hall in London Ontario.

1. Marcellus Wallace...It Ain't Easy....from their self titled debut CD. London Ontario's finest soul combo.

2. The Ballantynes....PMA...from their recent Dark Drives, Life Signs LP on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. They've also released a couple of singles and a 12" that are just as good as this LP.

3. The Ballantynes....Let's Go....as above.

4. Vintage Experience....Little Bit Of Soul...from their latest demo. VE are playing saturday night at Jimbo's here in London.

5. GTV's....Organ Donor....new 7" on Hidden Volume Records. The label is from Baltimore, but the GTV's are from Philly.

6. Jr. Gone Wild....It Never Changes...from their debut LP, Less Art More Pop from 1987 on BYO Records. Jr Gone Wild are from Edmonton and reformed a year or so ago due to interest in the band. And now, there's a crowd funding going on to raise money to create a documentary on the band. See the link on the Radio WW facebook page for more info.

7. Jr. Gone Wild...Drivin' Thru Texas....as above. Jr played London several times in the late 80's and always put on a really entertaining show. There just might be some pics from the London shows in the documentary.

8. Elk...Shaking Hands...from the Balm Beach 7" EP from 2011. St Catherines/Welland/Toronto based combo that have some really nice poppy garage sounds.

9. Deadly Snakes...I Can't Sleep At Night...from a double 7" on In The Red Records from 2004. The last time they played Call The Office, Greg Cartwright of Oblivians fame was in the band on guitar and vocals.

10. 24th Street Wailers....Spitfire...from their Where Evil Grows CD.

11. Shirley Matthews... Big Town Boy....from her 1964 single on Tamarac Records. Top 10 in Canada right as The Beatles hit the airwaves.

12. Vibrating Beds....Baby Tell Me...from a 2010 7" on Transistor 66 Records from Winnipeg.

13. Angry Dragons....Love You Tonite....from a 2009 7" EP on Transistor 66 Records.

14. Chica Boom Boom....Just Like Me....from a brand new download from Transistor 66 Records which is celebrating it's 100th release!! A milestone in today's world!! Congrats Art!!

15.  Excelsior...Black Top Pilot...live recording on CHRW 10/2/2015 from It's Trash.

16. Evil Eyes....Good As Gold...2012 7" from this Hamilton/Toronto based combo. Featuring Count Brockula on guitar and vocals.

17. Evaporators...Brainwashed....from a 1992 7" on Nardwuar Records.

18. Evaporators...Detroit 69...as above.

19. Jim Ashby....Speed City....1970 7" that made the airwaves here in London Ontario. My favourite record to come out of London Ontario!

20. The Sinners....No Brains Required....1980 7" from London Ontario. We had these guys on  air for an interview about 10 years ago, when they did a reunion at Call The Office.

21. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons...Are You Really Gone....from a 7" called Four Whom The Bell Tolls that came free with What Wave zine #16 1988. Singer Tom Dunphy is now in The Rizdales, a country band that backs Wanda Jackson whenever she tours Ontario. Drummer Andrew Lewis is now a world famous poster designer and even did a cover for What Wave zine many years ago!

22. The Government....Drive My Car....1979 7" from this Toronto art/punk combo.

23. The Improbables....Gotta Calm Down....from a brand new 7" on Hidden Volume Records.

24. The Reprobettes...Leave My Kitten Alone...brand new 7" on Boppa Do Down Records from Toronto. The band is actually from Australia and this is their first release.

25. Fuad And The Feztones...Little Sally Walker...2002 7" EP on Ricochet Sound Records out of Montreal. The band is from Egypt....LOL....

26. Blue Demons....Goodbye Stinktown...2012 7" on Boppa Do Down Records. The band is from parts unknown and wear matching blue wrestling masks.

27. Magic Christian....Let's Shake....2012 7" on Schizophrenic Records out of Hamilton Ontario. This version of the band included; Cyril Jordan (guitar, Flamin' Groovies), Eddie Munoz (bass, Plimsouls), Clem Burke (drums, Blondie), Gord Lewis (guitar, Teenage Head), Dave Rave (vocals, Shakers), and Michael Fonfara (keyboards, Lou Reed). A SUPER group if ever such a thing existed!!

4. The Bon....Static Electricity....title song from their only CD on Boppa Do Down Records, 2012. Toronto combo that featured a Leather Upper in the band.

5. Flying Squad....Brian Mulroney....demo from this London biker rock combo that tells why they love Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada. Timely as monday is election day so don't forget to vote if you haven't already.

6. 63 Monroe....She's Electric...from the recent Punk Rock Soldier CD.

7. Powerfist....I'm Not Like Everybody Else....demo from Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants who are playing saturday night at Call The Office with The Strike and Noble Savages.

8. Emergency....What You Gonna Do...from their 2005 1234 LP. Vancouver based combo that featured Fergus Macleod who has reformed his old band, The Strike. Conveniently playing at Call The Office on Saturday night.

9. Noble Savages....The Music Will Kill You....from a demo....they have a brand new 7" out on Transistor 66 Records.

10. The Tranzmitors....Dancing In The Front Row....from a 7" and Fergus Macleod played bass on this track.

11. Young Canadians....Losers....from the 1995 No Escape CD compilation. Vancouver based punk/new wave combo that featured Art Bergmann.

12. The Stooges....Fun House...from the LP of the same name and for Steve Mackay who passed away early this week. Steve played sax on this track, as well as several others on this LP.

Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 24/2015. Mike 'Star' Shulga Tribute

This show is a tribute to Mike Star, owner of Star Records, Star Record Label and organizer of the Star Club, a long time fixture on the Oshawa Ontario scene. Mike unexpectedly passed away last week. This show we'll be playing only records on the Star label or live recordings from the Star Club.

1. Charlie Pickett and the Eggs.....American Travel Lust....recorded live at the Star Club 2/9/1985.

2. Charlie Pickett and the Eggs....Honey Hush/Train Kept A Rollin'... as above.

3. Forgotten Rebels...No Beatles Reunion....from their first LP, In Love With The System. Coincidentally, Forgotten Rebels will be at Call The Office on Oct 3rd.

4. Forgotten Rebels...Hello Hello...from their This Ain't Hollywood LP. Thanx to Star Records for keeping these LP's in print for so many years.

5. Forgotten Rebels....I Think Of Her...from In Love With The System.

6. The Paladins....E McDaniels....from their R&R LP. This is the Toronto Paladins who only released the one LP, not to be confused with the west coast US band of the same name. Former Bopcat Duane Wayne was guitarist.

7. The Paladins....Shake All Night... as above.

8. Dr Feelgood....Mad Man Blues...from the LP of the same name and was licensed on Star in 1988. This was recorded long after Wilko Johnson was guitarist but it's still a pretty decent LP.

9. Durango 95....Lose Control...from the LP of the same name. Local Oshawa combo of which at least one member of, worked at Star Records, prior to forming Rob's Records.

10. Durango 95....Maniac Rock...from their second and last LP, Mother's Day, which came out in 1990. long after the band had broken up.

11. Purple Toads....Gonna Have A Good Time....recorded live at the Star Club10/12/1985. 3 of the 5 members of Durango 95, along with a new drummer formed the Purple Toads. PT played many many times at the Key West Club here in London Ontario.

12. Purple Toads....40 Pounder Blues...from their self titled debut LP. This song was also featured on a What Wave cassette that came with WW zine back in the mid 80's.

13. Purple Toads....Wild Time...from their second and last LP, Love Songs For The Hard Of Hearing from 1988.

14. Raunch Hands....Ford....recorded live at the Star Club 10/12/1985. The Raunch Hands were from NYC and played the Star Club at least twice.

15. The Creeps....Down At The Night Club...from the Enjoy The Creeps LP. The Creeps were from Sweden and it was a licensing deal on Star Records. Mike also released the CD of the album in Canada, probably his first attempt at releasing CD's as Star was noted as a record store and didn't stock many CDs.

16. The Cynics....Creepin'...from their Twelve Flights Up LP, another licensing deal. The Cynics are from Pittsburgh and are still active to this day.

17. The Lyres...Here's A Heart....from the double LP, A Promise Is A Promise. The second LP has Star Bonus on the record. Yet another licensing deal.

18. The Lyres....She Pays The Rent...as above and this was on the Star Bonus LP.

19. The Cheshyres....She Treats Me Right....recorded live at the Star Club 9/20/1986. The Cheshyres were a Toronto based band. Singer Wayne Pattern later moved to London and sang for The Evil Hoodoos for awhile. Drummer Ken Anderson went on to The Ultra 5, the Optic Nerve and is presently in the folk duo Hungrytown that tours the world.

20. The Cheshyres....Route 66... as above.

21. Laurence Beall and the Sultans....Folsom Prison Blues...from Rockin' The Star Club, recorded at the Star Club.

22. Ben Vaughn Comb....M M Motor Vehicle....from the Many Moods Of... yet another licensing deal for Star Records. Ben was from New Jersey and later did television soundtracks for That 70's Show and 3rd Rock From The Sun.

23. Surf Trio....Hang 10...from their Safari In A Living Graveyard LP, another licensing deal for Star. Portland Oregon based surf band.

Over the years we bought a TON of records from Mike either at Star Records, or when he was out at the record shows, something he did for many many years. He always had the absolute best selection of new records at the shows!!  And he bought a ton of What Wave zines from us over the years, always selling out and asking for more!  Thanx for having such great musical taste Mike, you're already missed big time!!

Radio What Wave Playlist Sept 17/2015 With Bloodshot Bill

This show is dedicated to Mike 'Star' Shulga, owner of the Star Records Label and Star Records store in Oshawa Ontario. For those that aren't aware, Mike passed away suddenly earlier this week. Mike had been a mainstay of the Canadian record scene since opening his store back in 1974 and attending record shows across the province ever since. He was always the guy with multiple tables of cool records at the shows...ie imports, rare pressings, singles, bootlegs and videos. And if you ever needed to know anything about any of the records he was selling, he'd be able to give you details right off the top of his head! Over the years, we've bought literally TONS of records from Mike. Many of which are among my faves! And Mike would buy stacks of What Wave zines back in the days when we were publishing and would always want more! Thanx for everything over the years Mike, you're going to be sadly missed. OK, so I've started a new podcast on GPPR. It's called Carburetor Dung (obvious tip o' the hat there to Lester Bangs, yo). It's a mixtape-style podcast (complete with cassette tape SFX) and you won't be hearing me blathering on about the music or anything else, for that matter. The only times you might here my voice will be when I occasionally do some sort of station ID or soundbytes... goofy shit like that. Actually, on this first episode, you won't hear my voice at all! That's because I started working on it before I knew what the title would be and then after I'd figured that out, I wasn't around a microphone. So anyway, another thing that's different about this show is it's gonna be all NEW music... stuff basically recorded and released in the past 5-10 years or so. Why? Because I think we need a lot more of that on the network. I dig the old shit, too, I just get tired of hearing ALL old shit and virtually none of the new punk/garage trash that's out there. So maybe we'll get some new listeners to the network with this one. Hope so, anyway. I hope you dig it, but I really couldn't care less if you don't. You can hear the first episode HERE.
