Radio What Wave Playlist November 5/2015
1. Hiroshima Hearts....Rust...from their debut CD. Last week they were number one on the CHRW charts, this week, not.
2. Louis Jordan....Caledonia....from a Mercury CD called Rock'n'Roll released in 1989. These are the Mercury sessions recorded back in 56/57 with the fabulous Mickey Baker on the guitar. Man can that guy play and so far ahead of his time!! An earlier version of this song was a hit for Louis Jordan back in the 40's. Most Louis Jordan compilations just collect his work from the chart topping work from the 40's, as great as it was, this later stuff was even better but didn't do as well in the charts.
3. Louis Jordan...Let The Good Times Roll... as above....again, Mickey Baker kills it!
4. The Limboos....Good Times....from a compilation 7" called We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records out of Spain.
5. King Biscuit Boy....Georgia Slop....from the Mouth Of Steel Lp from 1984 on Red Lightnin' Records and Distro'd in Canada via Stony Plain. King Biscuit Boy was from Hamilton and Canada's greatest harp player for many years running. He started out with Ronnie Hawkins, leaving to form Crowbar then went solo releasing many solo records and playing countless sessions for others. He passed away in 2003 after battling the bottle.
6. Muscle Souls....Nothing Today....download from a Toronto mod/soul combo who have played many gigs with...
7. The Reply.... I Must Stop...from their Downtown Soul CD from 2013. Toronto mod/soul combo that we've had play here in London a coupla times and they put on a fantastic live show!
8. The Balantynes...Argent...from the recent Dark Drives Life Signs Lp on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. A current fave of mine and a band i'd love to see live, but it probably won't happen as they are based in Vancouver and the logistics of touring across Canada aren't agreeable. So for now, i've got this record, a 12" EP and 2 singles.
9. Marcellus Wallace....Movin' On Up....from their self titled debut CD. Local soul/funk combo who put on a Killer live show!!
10. After Funk....Rage And Chuff...from the brand new download Til The Sun Comes Up. Toronto soul/funk combo who just happened to be in town at Call The Office the day this show aired.
11. The Scenics....In The Summer....from the brand new CD, In The Summer on Dream Tower Records. Studio recordings from 1977/78 that have been sonicly tuned and sound better than ever! You can catch live footage of The Scenics back in the day on The Last Pogo Jumps Again documentary.
12. Dany Laj and The Looks...Where's The Love....from the Word On The Street CD. The vinyl version of this is now available, just go to the band's facebook page for details on how to order. Hopefully we get the band back to London before year end as promised...hint hint.
13. Human Switchboard....Saturday's Girl....from the 1981 LP, Who''s Landing In My Hangar? on Faulty Products. Cleveland based combo that formed in the late 70's and survived until the mid 80's releasing only one studio LP, coupla singles, a live LP, and a compilation on ROIR cassettes after the fact. Huge Velvet Underground fans but not really obvious from this track as it sounds more like early 60's girl group sounds in the Blondie style.
14. Flamin' Groovies.... Shake Some Action....from a 1980 single on Line Records out of Germany. Slightly different than the version on the LP of the same name. FG's are scheduled to hit This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton on the 17th and Toronto on the 18th....
15. Flamin' Groovies....Let That Boy Rock'n'Roll....1975 7" on Philips Records from France.
16. Flamin' Groovies...River Deep Mountain High....1981 7" on Underdog Records from France. Recorded at Gold Star Studios and Chris Wilson has to strain a little bit to reach those high notes but sounds like he's having fun while doing it.
17. Long Day's Journey....The Oracle....recent download from this one man psychedelic band from Hamilton Ontario. And there's a brand new full length just released today called The Further Adventures Of The Electric Trip.
18. Hunger....Workshop....from the Strictly From Hunger! LP from this late 60's/early 70's combo from Portland.
19. Hank and Frank... Nancy Sinatra....from the cassette, Garunge that came with What Wave zine #14 in 1987. Current combo, Tuerto Loco play this song and they are playing at the St Regis on Saturday night.
20. Chris Houston....Girls Are Swell....from his 1986 LP, Hate Filled Man on Caucasion Records. Chris was in the Forgotten Rebels, a punk band, back in the late 70's and currently does the occasional solo acoustic gig, where he plays the odd song from that era.
21. Frankie and Jimmy....Maggie Camp Blues.... a demo from this Hamilton Ontario based blues combo and it looks like we've run outta time way before we've run outta tunes to play this week!
Big thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages, facebook thanx (there were quite a few this week!!!) and all the Heys!!!! That's what makes it all worthwhile!!!
Back again next week with more noise to annoy.
