Show #364: "The Eggman Collection #110"
Every 3 weeks I do a series of shows called The Eggman Collection which is a big potpourri of every song I've ever liked in my life...EVER! It's literally a huge mixing bowl full of songs written onto tiny pieces of paper. Over 15,000 songs that I've been compiling for the past 20-plus years of my life. Every song I've ever liked has gone into this bowl, and every three weeks I draw them out one-by-one and play them for you in no particular order. A mix of everything and anything I like, no matter what genre, era, style or year of release...if I like it, then I'll play it! No repeats of the same song ever! Tune in tonight (Friday) at 10pm EST for the 110th installment of The Eggman Collection and hear bands and artists like: King Crimson, The Neighb'rhood Childr'n, Sun Dragon, Pete Brown & Piblokto!, Wimple Winch, Bob Dylan, The Koala, The Moon, Tarkus, Flamin' Groovies, Stackridge, The Endd, David Bowie, Faust, Novalis, Grateful Dead, and many others!!

Soul Preacher --- You know your Damned! There are two 7" picture sleeves off the top of my head that would really kind of complete this batch. One being the Japanese press of Neat Neat Neat as Mole pointed out a few posts back and the German version of New Rose.
That pink vinyl press of "Don't Cry Wolf" is in the third photo. Is that 'Something Weird" boot 7" on Scatterbrain Child? If so, yea I don't have that. That "Black Album" you mention, I thought I had that, but looking I see I don't. Is that the Big Beat pressing or one of the non UK/US pressings?
The screamin' Soul Preacher said:
Pretty damned solid collection Mike !!!
Being myself quite obsessed by The Damned (and late 70s UK punk in general) in my teens, I think I may own one or two vinyls I can't see on these cool pix.
In the 45 category, I'm thinking about a pink (vinyl is pink, cover is the generic Stiff records black cover) 7" edition of "Don't cry Wolf"/"One way Love"; another 7 " (a bootleg) called "Something Weird" (ltd edition of 200) from around 1986 I believe featuring live renditions of "L.A. woman", "Just can't be happy today" and "Lively Arts".
Oh, and my "Eloise" 7" has a slightly different cover.
In the LP section, I have also a picture vinyl of "Damned Damned Damned"; a simple edition of the "Black Album" (minus the "Curtain Call" platter) with a plain black cover; a few compilations ("Another great record from the Damned", "Light at the end of the tunnel"...) and a few live bootlegs ("Too much to drink in Southend", "Ballroom Blitz").
And I have to say, it's the 2nd time only I see that (bootleg) 7" version of "Love song"/"Burglar" (2nd pic, top right). The 1st copy I've met, decades ago, is in my living room now, partying hard with its happy waxen companions.
Cheers !!!
Damn, I forgot to pull that one out for the photo!............. allright smart ass, you know that is a high dollar and rare one. That thing was going for hundreds back in the early-mid 80's as I recall. I've come to terms with the fact that I'll never own that one, I'll just have to be content with my Japanese 'Blitzkrieg Bop' instead.
Mole said:
Impressive pics! Couldn't see the Japanese 'Neat Neat Neat' though....!!
Mike said:The Damned followed by the Ramones. Mostly because they both have released so many damned (get it?) records and 7" sleeve variations etc etc that sucker a collector nerd like me to buy. No picture of me, but a set a photos I'd snapped for another forum. I have to give credit though to an old friend who sold me his entire Damned 7" collection back in the 80's. I knew it hurt him, but he knew it was going to a good home. That's where a good chunk of my Damned and Capt. Sensible singles came from.
Now that'd be a discography to put together. I think I've had three different versions of the 'Apartment Wresting RnR" LP alone, and none are probably the original pressing.

I think I own more records from Beat-Man (The Monsters, Lightning Beat-Man, Reverend Beat-Man) than anything in my collection. I think the plus there is he gives them to me... ;)
Hmmm, I'm not familiar with that one. Thanks for adding a name to the song. Now Googling won't be next to impossible.

definately.... I have a show on Thursday nites 10-midnite and play all garage and its awesome...I remember The black lips in atlanta when like 10 people used to show up for a show...now look...if the music could get to the people they would dig it...the problem is getting it out there publicly and internationally...on the radio...I refuse to listen to commercial music...you can be successful and still not be a jerk...a prancer...cool then

In recent history I would say that the White Stripes are the closest that a band has come to reaching the mainstream charts.
I think you're forgetting the mainstream successes of bands like the Hives, Black Keys and Black Lips. The Detroit Cobras, Dirtbombs, Reigning Sound and various other bands have had some success, too. Maybe not "mainstream" or household names, but they've definitely sold a lot of records.
....A long overdue project , but, anyone who's made a film will tell you it always takes longer than expected....One of those cops looked like he was walking two big dogs , y'knowhuddamean?
artists I want to one day own every record of include :: The Gories (recently just got outbid on 3 rare Gories 7" up on ebay...), Supercharger, The Mummies, Jay Reatard solo + The Reatards, Cosmic Psychos, The Dirtbombs
I'm right there with y'all on both the Mummies and Fleshtones singles...but tho I do own a copy of les Sexareenos' Singles and Unreleased Material collection I still want all the actual Sexareenos vinyl singles...& while I'm at it, to compliment that quest, why not all the solo BBQ singles as well as all the King Khan & BBQ Show singles (of the latter, I think all I'm missing is the BBQ & Blacksnake single tho I do have shitty mp3s of this release on a harddrive somewheres)
Graham Day-- I love his music (Prisoners, Solar Flares, The gaolers, etc.) and also wish he would stop by the states one of these days.

And on Mar 23rd, we've got a couple of members of Uranus to talk about a live to air that was exactly 30 years ago Mar 23rd on CHRW. And we're going to play part of that live to air featuring none other than Uranus live at The Embassy!! Real rock'n'roll!!!
The archived show is now split into 3 parts, and the 3rd part contains the show right after us, In The Red which you'll probably dig!!
Don Arden, now there was a man who made money, for himself! Theres a really late Gene Vincent song called 'our souls' which GV repeats faster and faster at the end to sound like arse/assholes, he then can be clearly heard to say 'how was that Mr. Arden?'
The thing with the 'industry' is that people who are in it to make music are there because thats what they love and want to do, theyre not businessmen and have no interest in that side of it, leaving them open to the sharks!
According to Ian Maclagan's autobio circa 2005, the Small Faces have still not been paid any royalties to this day because they signed bad deals with Don Arden and Andrew Loog Oldham's management companies.
Read this on Facebook a while ago, certainly not the only artist to get screwed by the industry. Rod Stewart paid Ronnie Laines medical expenses cos he had no money, most of the major artists from the 60s fought for years to get any money. Even the stones were still fighting for money in to the 90s. Didnt it take until the 90s for the Small Faces to get any money as well? Too many more to mention.
I was alluding to the line in Mr. Chambers stating that "He did NOT squander his money on drugs", and whether you want to call it squander or not Andre did use some of his earning on drugs. Andre had a #9 on the r&b back in 1957 with Bacon Fat and wrote Shake A Tail Feather which has been covered by everbody and his dog. Andre has expressed for years that he has been under paid for his music especially that latter.
true, but this particular story isn't about not being frugal with your money, it's about artists with big success stories (chart hits like mr. chambers here) being railroaded by the music industry. hard to not be frugal with your money if you ain't got no money to be frugal with.
Matthew Nykodym said:
Andre Williams may be not always the most frugile with his money is still working at age 76 not necessarily because he wants to, he has to. Great, yet sobering documentary done back in 2008 Agile, Mobile, Hostile. Check it out if you haven't already.
There are also stories of people like Bruce Springteen paying medical and living expenses for Mary Wells when she was battling oral cancer. The Rolling Stones paid to bury Howlin' Wolf's lead guitarist, Hubert Sumlin, I am sure there are more stories to count of this happening to musician we know and love. I think a lot how some of these people are getting by.

Getting excited for SXSW. I will be at Roky Erickson's Ice Cream Social at Threadgill's on Friday 16th. Wayne Kramer is also on the bill! Roky usually has a surprise guest on stage with him - last year it was Billy Gibbons who joined him on 'You're Gonna Miss Me'. Seeing Peter Case & Paul Collins on Saturday afternoon and Standells on Saturday night. It's going to be fun.
uuh....he was talkin about NEW ORLEANS, which is definitely "part of the South." actually, TX is, too. part of the confederacy = part of the South, friend. #justsayin :)
John Battles said:
HA HA HA, A lot of people don't consider Texas part of the South , anymore ! I lived there for 12 years , and found the Deep South a lot friendlier... New Orleans , of course , is ultra - touristy , now , but , it still has it's charm. It's funny that they're trying to make Austin more tourist - friendly , when you can't even hail a cab. It'll probably be a long time until they announce the lineup for The Ponderosa Stomp. I thought it was kind of weak , last year , so , I did'nt go , but I've gone for several years in a row. There's nothing else like it.
Shtbird said:Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. Awesome responses, super informative.
I definitely think I'll try and make SXSW, bring my bike and crash in the bed of my truck. It's a helluva drive (2000 miles, one way = ~1000$ in gas round trip) Maybe with a carpool and a couple rideshares, it could be affordable. Still, it sounds like it'll be an awesome time, and I've always wanted to check out Austin.
@ Battles - The Ponderosa Stomp sounds pretty rad too, if SXSW falls through. I've never been to New Orleans (or anywhere in the South, for that matter). Flying there and booking a hotel for a couple days would be far less expensive than trying to make it out to Austin for a week.
You should ask JB from Born Bad Records...

Of course when there are soooo any bands out there trying to scratch a living playing music, it really grates when successful musicians complain about the privelidged position they find themselves in and there are some great great tunes that comment on the situation of our time, and past times. Dead Kennedys, Pennywise, Propogandi, NOFX, Crass, Bad Religion...and so on and on and on...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czx2p-GHBhk
But what about when those mega-artists do it, when they comment on other issues both within and outside of their music? When Bono and Sting open their mouth on stuff do we not just tend to think of them as patronising pricks? Is this fair? Do we tend to think of what they say as less valid because of how many gazillions they have in the bank or because they're from outside out chosen genre?
