thanks for the reply john. yeh, i saw a sf band called "moon duo" the other day, and i think he was playing an airline, and the tone was great! that said, i sold a very good strat(which i subsequently recuperated) in order to buy a peavey buckingham because it looked beautiful, and was designed by darrell higham the kick-ass rockabilly player(and guitarist and husband of imelda may). i even added duesenberg p90 pick-ups. a rockabilly-fanatic friend of mine loved the retro sound, but i found it difficult to play(lead at least), seriously lacking in sustain(noblesse oblige-the bigsby), and more importantly lacking the versatility of the strat....a type-cast guitar. i'm back with my strat. i dress her up in fishnet stockings and stilletto heels, but "the thrill is gone". she's reliable; she gets the job done. she knows how to moan. but she'll never be one of those cheap, trashy things.....to my eternal regret....but i love her....my strat....sigh!

They look cool but cheap guitars always needs adjusting. If you know how to work on guitars get one, but if you don't, you'll spend more then the things worth in shop fees. The reason you don't see alot of touring bands playing Danelectro guitars is because they won't hold up on the road. Locals bands will play them because they have 1 show a month, play 5 a week and they fall apart. I had a Longhorn, cool bass but nuts would come loose, if you catch it in time your okay but if you don't your pickup will be hanging by a wire. Take a look at Eastwood Guitars, they style them after popular way out guitars from the 60's but are built stronger.

do you suffer from penis envy? well i suffer excruciatingly from guitar envy! i see all these wonderful, retro guitars, and i want to go out and commit some crimes. what makes it worse, is that some of them are really affordable. the musician in me says "your strat is an excellent workhorse instrument with good tone, good mechanics, good intonation, and excellent sustain, while the devil in me wants to be seen around town with one of these cheap, slutty jezebels tempting me to forsake everything for a spot of instant gratification.....i can't tell you the effect these hussies have on me.....if i could get my hands on one of theirs bigsbys and vibrate it just a little bit......oooh, suits you, sir! does anyone else suffer from this problem? yours respectfully a frustrated strat-wrangler.

does anyone have any idea if the Las Vegas Shakedown is happening this year?  there are dates set for mid August - but that seems unlikely as there is no lineup or tix info and the website is sleeping

I also saw somewhere dates for it in mid October

OK, I noticed something that you forgot so far, and its a big one. ? Mark & the Mysterians-96 tears, an -action. Both albums are solid from start to finish with not a bum track. These are hard to beat.

Ahhh...nevermind what I said about the HumanBeinz album. Im now onto side2 and there going terribly mellow-yellow on me. Certainly not a top contender for a kickass best garage albums list. Seriously just buy the 45 instead peeps.I want my money back. Too many 1-hit wonders in the garage genre. Thats the only thing I can say thats better about the revivalist bands. At least you get a full album of what you're paying for. We should have a list of best garage bands too avoid LPs by. Hahaa. Cus' lots of these groups ruled ass for such a brief time before switching trends.

I like that choice of the Ugly Ducklings LP, thats underated. What is the best Guess Who record before they got suckier, and mainstream? I saw one in the bins with yellow cover called shakin all over(johnnykidd&pirates) but I didn't snap it up because I was afraid it might have too many mellow clunkers on it like there later more common records did.

I beg to disagree. Good guitar playing is part and parcel of wild primitive rock'n'roll just as much as minimalist guitar playing! Paul Burlinson and Cliff Gallup were excellent guitar players. Some of the finest garage songs displayed great expertise in terms of guitar work: The Recalls' Reesie and Nobody's Guy are killers, so is Project Blue by the Banshees. Or what about In the Past by We the People? I hear it's very hard to play (by the way check out the excellent French version La fermeture éclair by Belgian yéyé girl Delphine)!

So garage addicts should reclaim good guitar playing. Let's not leave it to bores like Mark Knopfler or Clapton!
