    • Oh man... that's terrible news. I loved the Snake Alley podcast and often wondered what was going on with Bob over the past few years.... RIP

    • Sad news to report. Former GaragePunk Podcaster Bob Thurmond (co-host and producer of the Snake Alley podcast) passed away this past week. Police were called to his house early this morning by his landlord after he hadn't been seen in several days, but his Jack Russell Terrier was still penned up in the back yard. They found Bob inside and estimated he'd been dead for four or five days.

I first met Bob back in the late 1990s when he'd call me up on KDHX during my radio show and talk about music and cars. In addition to punk/rock'n'roll, baseball and B-movies, he was a cheap guitar aficionado and a big fan of muscle cars, and had an old GTO at the time. I'll never forget the first time he called me at the station; he was telling me about his car and then he said "hang on," hung the phone outside the window, ran out to the driveway and revved the engine for me so I could hear it. That was how I first came to know Bob. Later, he got the idea to resurrect an old '80s St. Louis punk 'zine that he'd helped publish called Head in a Milk Bottle, and he recruited me and a few others to help revive it with two issues that were published around 2001. A third issue was completed but never made it to the printer, unfortunately. Up until last year I was still trying to track down the original article files from that doomed third issue in an effort to post it online, but Bob couldn't find the disc. Bob was also the guitarist in an old St. Louis hardcore punk band called White Suburban Youth who would later evolve into Ultraman. He produced the Snake Alley podcast from August 2005 thru March 2007 and was one of the most entertaining podcasts on the early days of "GaragePunk.com Pirate Radio." Bob was also a pretty close friend. We hung out often over the years (although not as much lately), went camping together a couple of times and I helped him through a rough spell in his life after he and his ex-wife split up and he was suffering from depression and battling alcoholism. We're not sure yet of the cause of death, but the police suspected heart attack. I'm not sure exactly how old Bob was, but I believe he was in his late 40s. Definitely too young to go. We'll miss you, Bob. You were one of a kind. Rest in peace.

    • I agree with 99% of the suggestions made here. Only thing missing the the Scientists - Pissed On Another Planet collection. Superb!

    • BTW,  I would also recommend the Chevelles.  They have an excellent compilation out on Wicked Cool Records, titled "Barbarella Girl God," along with their entire back catalog, which is available via digital downloads.

    • Powerpop is very big in Japan at the moment. The Rubinoos recently played here. I've seen the Fast Cars, the Boys and Nikki Corvette in recent times. And in fact I'm going to see Paul Collins live in Tokyo tonite! There's also a powerpop revival happening in Tokyo spearheaded by bands like Firestarter, The Raydios and the Tweezers (all with former members of Teengenerate).

Some powerpop 45s I've recently found include the Troops (from Australia), the Boyfriends (the '78 UK band not the indie rock band) & The Features (again not the indie rock band), and how about the Cigarettes?

    • I would strongly recommend Manda and the Marbles, who were a mix of power pop and new wave.  Several of their songs were used in a recent indie film called "Nail Polish," which takes place in the 80s, and those song fit in so well with that era that you would think they were recorded back then.  Their two best LPs are "More Seduction" and "Angels with Dirty Faces."  Unfortunately, the band is now defunct.

Another recommendation is the Takeover UK, who put out one full length LP, "Running with the Wasters," before calling it quits.  They are a great mix of power pop and brit pop, with a touch of punk thrown in for good measure.

    • The Boys are my fav right now and are still rockin out!... Its a real shame about what happened to the kids in The Exploding Hearts. They were right on with their music and soooo fucking young! I'm going to see Paul Collins Beat this month and can't wait.

Check out my band TV Tramps, we're a classic punk rock/power pop inspired band from NJ.

For anyone in Brooklyn, we have a gig tonight @ Hank's Saloon with Psycho Charger and The Vermin.

    • With shure 520, you have a dirty sound, but if you uses the shure with a guitar tube amp. better. And maybe you have the posibility to find one Astatic 335, on e-bay, really cheap. with this shit you can make a really dirty harp trash sound.

    • BBC article

Check this out. I found this pretty cool and informative. I'm no punk expert so articles that aren't all about the Clash, the Sex Pistols etc have that effect. The article also links more French punk bands.

    • Hey, everybody! I represent a band called The Stampletons and we're from Minsk, Belarus. I see, the Hideout is 99% about trashy music, but we play 60s beat with a gentle sound and we have no idea who can be interested in this. We've had an offer from one label, but the deal was cancelled for some reasons, that remain unclear. Don't know if there's anything wrong with the music, our album that we put out on December 9th 2010 (digital and self-released CD) gained mixed reviews from negative to very positive. Funny thing is that garage labels say that we're too "pop" and more "pop" labels say that we're too "garage".

So that's why I finally decided to write here. Does anyone know labels which dig beat music???

    • I tell ya baby

      You ought to know

      That when you love

      You got to show

      It's in your soul

You say you love me baby

      Yes I know it's true

You know my heart a-burnin' [?]

      Shows that I love you

But every time I try to console you with a kiss

It only seems to get myself all wrapped up in a great big mess

I can't love nobody but you

I don't need nobody but you

I don't want nobody but you

And then you tell me baby give you back your key

And all the time you're saying honey let me be

I gotta tell ya that you're inattentive to me

And all the time you're heading for a circle of reality

Tell me once again how you feel for me

I'll tell what I said before

      I'll tell ya what'll be

Now that you know baby who is [unintelligible - sounds like "coming into play"]

You know honey that we can love

      In so many different ways

And when I ask ya honey to describe our goal

You know honey you reply that it's me that is in your soul

I can't love nobody but you

I don't need nobody but you

I don't want nobody but you
