Cro,
the usual suspects:
the first Barracudas album 'Drop out with' and 'Don't let that feeling go' on their last album, from 3 years ago;
the song 'Shake some action' by the Flamin' Groovies and acouple of other Groovies songs after '76;
the first Paul collins 'Beat album -the one with 'R'n'r girl'
the Nerves compilation (the 70's band with Paul Collins, Jack Lee and Peter Case);
Blondie, of course;
One night in America by the Plimsouls, ther live album-tuff to find but there's a blog (by a guy called Ratboy) where you can... plus their sell-out album 'Everywhere at once', a bit bombastic but fantastic nevertheless;
Stiv Bators solo album on Bomp/Line
etc, etc; also Nikki Corvette, she's a funtastic singer, don't miss her if she's playing near your waters,
the Mosquitos, a NY 80's band;
if you find the Ratboy blog, there's everything you need on it;
bon voyage!
Ivan
Wow, kudos to your finding that Kids record! its one of the hardest to find!! I suggests you listen to: The Quick, Rubinoos, 20/20, Nikki and the Corvettes (teen poppy female fronted), Milk n Cookies (rpm has an amazing collection of all their recordings if you don't manage to find the album), I consider the beat to be on the power pop side and its debateable whether or not you can consider the nerves power pop which i do! Hope that helps.. i will dig through my records for some great comps too.
thank you so much!
the brand new Hanging On For Mercy podcast is a power pop bonanza! I play a lot of it every show, but #38 is particularly rich with power pop...
Also, go check out NotLame.com. great power pop site. their "sounds like" feature in the site's search engine is right handy. and soon I'll be taking over their podcast as well!
Just last year the guy behind that site published a great guide called "Shake Some Action" that comes with a companion CD. You'll also find that on NotLame.com.
happy hooks and power chord!
someone can help me get some infos (books talking about it, mags...)???
the only records I got are The Real Kids s/t and the 2nd of Registrators (i think it's power pop...or not??)...
"I Need Somebody" - ? and the Mysterians
"Exit" - Prince & the Paupers
Surfin' Bird" or "King of the Surf" - The Trashmen
"Annie Oakley" or "Get On This Plane" - The Premiers
"Hidden Charms" - Link Wray
"Shain's A Go Go" - Los Shains
"Cemeterio" - Los Saicos
"I'm Rowed Out" - The Eyes
"Jump Jive & Harmonize" - Thee Midniters
For more "modern" stuff: Anything by The Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars, Thee Headcoats, The Masonics, The Wildebeests, The Mummies, The Brentwoods, Supercharger, etc.
Certainly Help Me by The Primitives & Ain't Got No Feelin' by Derek's Accent would be another two to add to the list.
Fucking amazing band... i dig the pianist and I am constantly stunned by what they do... death walks behind you is flawless... anyway... anyone know of kick ass shit that is close to this besides bansd like yes.. i do enjoy fragile but would like to expand to nitty gritty bands that are not so well known.
Thanks. I did used to see Lord Floss quite a bit at the Modern Life club nights in Stockton. But I ain't seen him for a number of years now. I did contact Mike on MySpace who runs Castlegate Recording Studios where the 'Which Mask Today?' single was recorded at. Mike had this to say anout The Screaming Mad - "Now then, god this brings back memories. I remember the 2nd or 3rd time they recorded with me, I'd just finished setting everything up and was about to record when all three of them vanished and came back dressed up as monks! lol....apparently it helped them record, funny fuckers. Great lads, aint seen them since the late 90's. I have all their master recordings, I've kept everything I've done over the last 20 years. Great to hear from you to. Mike "
The Screaming Mad were a band from the North East of England fronted by Lord Floss. I remember seeing the band back in the late 90s supporting The Mourning After at a pub in Stockton-On-Tees. I'd just about forgotton about the band until the other week when I picked up a copy of their single 'Which Mask Today?' which came out on Dig The Fuzz Records. The record was pretty good in a early Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett kind of way. I was just wondering if this single was the bands only release? I've had a look on google but apart from the single all I can find is a mention of a forthcoming compilation album on Dig The Fuzz Records that was to feature a track by The Screaming Mad. Did this comp ever come out and is the Dig The Fuzz label still on the go?
Hey guys, I'm new around here and I've scanned through all the pages and it doesn't look like this thread has been done before so forgive me if it has.
I was wondering what are your personal top 3 favourite garage bands.
I only discovered the whole garage thing a few months ago when I stumbled upon The Sonics. Since then I've been abliterating the net to try and find more, so I thought it'd be interesting to see who's everyones favourites. (It'd also give me some names to look into ;p)
Like I said I'm new to the genre but out of the small amount of bands I know:
The Sonics
The Mummies
& The Remains (no order)
I especially like The Mummies from what videos I've seen fo them, they seem pretty crazy.
So what's everybody elses...
I like a lot of music. I think "hard rock" is good.
But then again, I hate musical genres. It is my one true hate. Like all these little sub genres and niches that the media/ bands class themselves as.
To me Led Zeppelin isn't hard rock, it's just rock. Black Sabbath to me aren't hard rock, they're heavy metal.
Some people refer to Iron Maiden as hard rock or classic rock/metal nahh! They're heavy metal.
There's a lot of good "hard rock" music I think, and there's a lot of shit "hard rock" music, like any genre.
gong-gong song! the ikettes. ps... where's hot slop?
I am proud to be one of the youngest people at every doo-wop show I attend. And I do every chance I get. They are always lots of fun! Kenny Vance (& the Planotones -- check out their "Looking For An Echo") is tops for me, Dion, the Marvellettes, too, but there's so many greats. Shep & the Limelights, Larry Chance & the Earls, etc. Vocals. When you don't really need anything else. At their finest. Telling stories. Anywhere. Like this... (even on Shindig!) So yeah, I digs it.
with doo wop it's really a case of I gotta hear it for myself... too many geezer collectors out there willing to pony up big money for total schlock, more impressed by rarity than the quality of the song...
despite that, here's one rarity that I wouldn't mind dishin' a little dinero to have - Sun Ra's "Papa's Gonna Tell You No Lie"
One of the best comps I've ever bought was "Cruisin' The Drag" on Relic... It's a bunch of Oklahoma City vocal/doo wop groups that were on Wheel records. (One of the bands was named "The Sonics" which is why I bought it at the time, not paying much attention to the liner notes explaining how it was an entirely different group.)
Bingo! Technology is bitchen, but I prefer to have fellow humanoids pointing the way to good music. Grrtch said:
... I dunno about you guys, but I thrive on that... I like to know the context from where that the song came. Pandora lacks that human touch... and folkses, thass sumptin the podcasts got in abundance! cha . . .
no podcasts on Pandora, but for those of who do podcast, it's a good source to learn about stuff new to us. that is -- as long as the artists and/or label bother to send them their releases. Norton does. I hope more labels follow their lead.
but unlike our podcasts, Pandora doesn't at all talk about what you're listening to... say if you download an episode of Hanging On For Mercy (some of y'all just don't know what yer missin'!) I dish up something like record talk at a party. I dunno about you guys, but I thrive on that... I like to know the context from where that the song came. Pandora lacks that human touch... and folkses, thass sumptin the podcasts got in abundance! cha . . .
I saw that when I updated to the latest version of iTunes, but I didn't enable it... hadn't had enough time to look into what it actually does.
So some of you are singin' the praises of Pandora, but does it play PODCASTS???
"Genius" is worthless. Just tried it on the song that was playing on my iTunes (Charlie Feathers' "Dig Myself a Hole" ) and it said it didn't recognize the track. If it doesn't recognize Charlie Feathers, I don't recognize Genius.
I do love shuffle mode though. Use it on my iPod and iTunes all the time. The Cramps goes into Fela Kuti, goes into Johnny Paycheck goes into Miles Davis. Only way to fly.
Mournful news. A really great musician is gone. He will be missed.
This is very sad. I thought his keyboards added so much to the band's sound. Guess I'll put Piper At The Gates of Dawn on again.
Sad, I got this link this morning; http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/sep/15/pink.floyd.member.dies
