First off, it's amazing how many bands from outside the us are doing such great music but I've been wondering, what's going on with the local american scene? are there any new bands worth checking out? are there any female fronted bands out there? Also I would like to know if there are The Cramps-style bands out there or not and if its possible can anyone direct me to garage rock/punk bands who are kind of scary and b-movie monster like?

I'd really appreciate all your help people. I know I'm new and shouldn't be doing this kind of post but I'm really eager to discover more music.

Some from the UK; I stumbled across The Neasden Bees today as another band that we're in touch with (Nervous Twitch, female bassist/singer) are playing with them soon. The Franceens; another with a female bassist. There's another band - whose name escapes me - garnering a fair amount of attention at the moment. I'll try to remember!

      And there's us, too.....

I saw the Mean Bikini in Camden last month, a very good band.

I think the singer from the Okmoniks went on to form a band called the Manxx:

sounds like the same singer, I'm probably wrong, still good..

I can't believe I forgot about Bleached too! they're great.

There's a band from London called Mean Bikini who are worth checking out too:

Not contemporary, but you guys have all heard the killer version of 25 Cent doing "The Witch" (Sonics cover) ?  On one of the earliest Flying Nun 45s.  Girl punks from NZ who also supposedly did a 'live' cover of "Final Solution" by Ubu, but that was never recorded..

Haven't heard anything of the Husbands in a long time. I assume they are defunct? Thought I saw them 2 or 3 years ago in Frisco, but maybe its been longer than that. Some old footage of them live (after a minute or so in). Their 1st record is my favorite from them.

And how about the Okmoniks, saw them in 2010 last, but havent heard anything new from them either.

i'm gonna agree with a few others here on the reccomendations for The Dyes and The Black Belles. I saw the Black Belles recently at a local bar and they were pretty boss. Pussycat & the Dirty Johnsons are pretty neat, too.

and...YES you should be doing posts like this! that's what the hideout's for. :)

      Thanks, Joe!

      Joe said:

I missed one of your criteria - The Monofones aren't American - oops!  Here's a few amazing and relatively new female-fronted bands:

The Woolly Bandits (from Los Angeles, with Sky Saxon's former backing band)

      A Giant Dog (Texas)

      Persian Claws (Vermont)

      The Love Me Nots (Arizona)

And you're probably familiar with Shannon and the Clams.

Now that I think about it,  there's an impressive number of women in the garage punk scene nowadays.

Still Active all female or female-fronted: The Moaners, Black Belles, The Kills

Not active, but worth looking up: Pandoras, The Brood, Trashwomen, Bobbyteens

Female-fronted b-movie monster rock? The Horrorpops is all that comes to mind, but they're Dutch I think.
