Maybe you've heard of , or seen , the book "'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy" , about "Frequently" misheard lyrics , when maybe a half - dozen or so entries were ever heard that way by anyone other than the compilers , such as :

"There's a bathroom on the right" ("There's a bad moon on the rise").

When I was in Junior High , "Miss You" was a big deal , even though I was about the only kid in my school who even liked The Stones.

"I've been haulin' ass along" -  ("I've Been Holdin' out so long") ("ASS" was still a big deal in the 70's).

The band , Le Roux, were briefly popular with "I'm Addicted".
      "I 'm a dickhead , baby"   ( "I'm addicted , baby."). There's no way they did'nt plan it that way.

And , one could write a book on the Ramones (I already wrote an article...).

"They're formin' in a straight ine , they're goin' to the car wash."  ("They're formin' in a straight line , they're goin' thru a tight line." )   ("Blitzkrieg Bop.").

"Shot in Vietnam , I'm doin' fine"   ("Shock treatment , I'm doing fine.") ("Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment").

"I Can't Give You Anything" ("You think I'm kind of cute , but , who's gonna bring home the ludes ?" ("...But , who'e gonna bring home the loot ?")  .

"Hey , hey , hey , what is it on the TV ?" ("HEY , HEY , HEY , WHY IS IT ALWAYS THIS WAY ?". )    "Why Is It Always This Way?".

      Then there's ....."Final Solution" , Pere Ubu . "Don't need a cure , and I don't need a cure , and I don't need a cure , I need a final solution."     ("Don't need a car , and I don't need a job , and I don't need a girl , I need a final solution"....That said it all , for me , when I first heard it in my teens. Even if I was wrong.).

Sex Pistols "New York" "An imitation made of Cheech and Chong."  ("..Cheese and chalk.")
"You porno faggots"  ("You poor little faggots".).

X - "Universal Corner"  "Scream in agony" ( "Screaming "Magdalene").

"Nausea"    "Take this , this is all they had." ("Take the scissors , saw the head.").

"Johnny Hit and Run Pauline"  "He bought a sterilized light bulb"  ("Sterilized Hypo" - That was'nt mine , that was on a lyric sheet for a band I was auditioning with.).

You get the idea , let's see some of yours.

Could'nt tell ya. But , thanks to you and Jane Dear for the new submissions.

I have'nt thought of any good ones , lately.

Yeah, I never understood how he thought THAT was the chorus,

I mean, it's in the song title..

oh another one, that smiths song 'how soon is now'.  My friend used to think the chorus went "I am Puma and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does".

mind, he was pretty drunk when he first heard it, nevertheless, I refuse to sing it any other way than that now. haha

I'm right out teh door ,but , I''ll check it out later. "Extra Baggage" would be more accessible , but , maybe they're talking about cooking a dead guy like he was Jerk Chicken,,,,

      Jane Dear said:

At around 1:10 the lyrics are supposedly "lets say we throw the extra baggage, come from the jerk from the man on fire" but I'm pretty sure it's more like something about "sexy maggots" and "the church of the minotaur."

      So many songs..

My Friend Lily used to sing "Summer Girls, You got nothing to lose" to Cheap Tricks' 'Southern Girls'

Another friend of mine used to sing along "Oh Oh, Island of Soul"  to the Ramones' 'I Love Her So'.

......I always heard that as "Don't need no human race" , as it rhymes with "Pretty Face" , unless you've seen it in print as "Human Rights" , which Stiv did'nt seem to care enough about to bring up , until he got involved in the "Sun City'' video.....

Yes , Leadbelly's version is the earliest readily known, but ,I don't think it was the first recorded version. I was listening to it , this evening , in fact. They're still funny lyrics ,anyway , the ones you transcribed.

This Leadbelly record has a few "What THE HELL'S " IN IT , WHICH WAS A BIG DEAL , back then. There's a version of "Whoa Back , Buck " that goes "Who made the Black man , oh , Goddamn", which is'nt in better known versions (Leadbelly re-recorded many of his songs.). First time I heard someone say HELL , like a swear word , was Big Joe Turner "If you did'nt love me , why the HELL did'nt you tell me so?!! ".....Tho' there were a lot of nastier Blues songs on private pressings.

      Real lyrics:

"Don't need no human rights." -Dead Boys, "Sonic Reducer"

"You gotta pump it in your pants" -Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Get Up and Jump"

"His head was found in a driving wheel..." -Nirvana, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" (which as you pointed out is a cover of Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter's "In the Pines")

"The grass is always greener where the dogs are shedding." -Soundgarden, "Outshined"

"Tattooed all I see." -Pearl Jam, "Black"

One that I forgot to list is "I don't even care if your dad's a he" for "I don't even care if your dad's the heat" in Frank Zappa's "Wowie Zowie" from Freak Out!

jOHNNY , ok , I only actually know the first song , but , those are pretty funny. What are the real lyrics ?      Oh , wait , was "Where Did You Sleep..." Nirvana's version of the old Country / Blues standard "In The Pines"?

You know , I had the hardest time
getting my mind around that one..... I COULD'NT BELIEVE HE WAS SAYING THAT..... I knew Lux , and I never asked him about it. He was too busy talking about other people's music to explain his own. Now , I've forgotten what the Nova's version WAS saying. NO , WAIT ! IT WAS "RAAAAAIIIIIIIIID !!!!" , which was just a catch - phrase the real Crusher would use. Of course , it just sounded like somebody puking. I thought both versions started out with "READY !!!!!!" WHEN I FIRST HEARD 'EM. But , it was "RAID" , originally.

BUT , YOU REMINDED ME , THANK YOU , I WAS GOING TO MENTION THE CRAMPS ' VERSION OF "SHE SAID".......Which Lux sang with a styrofoam cup in his mouth (YUCK !) to emulate Hasil Adkins' vocal delivery ,making it hard to tell if he did know the real lyrics.....

"Looked at Me like a Dyin' box of those Thou - Thou cheese." (Hasil.)

'Looked at me like a Dinosaur about to jump out of the ice age" ( My interpreation of The Cramps' version.) .

"Looked at me like a Dinosaur about to jump out of the toilet seat " (One of guys in The Psycho Daisies told me that's how he heard The Cramps' version !).

Even Miriam said she thought Hasil was saying "It JUMPED OUT OF THE TOILET !" instead of "It jumped out of the bed" when she first heard the song.
      Johnny Lurg said:

Lux Interior screaming "RAAAAAPE" at the beginning of The Cramps' cover of "The Crusher" is probably a reference to a mishearing of the original Novas recording.

      Radar Love - Golden Earring.

The SECOND LINE , i'M CONVICED , STILL , GOES "WE DON'T NEED TO FUCK AT ALL!"

('We Don't Need a Phone at All").

"Radio playin' some forgotten song , BRENDA LEE'S COMING ON STRONG"

FOR YEARS , I THOUGHT THAT WAS "BRAND NEW LEADS COMING ON STRONG" , WHICH WORKS !

And in the Golden Age of Streaking - " I'm spinnin' into a NUDE sunrise!" (Substitute "New".)

Of course , nobody got "Paranoia Thee Destroyer!" right in the states , because we generally don't pronounce "The" with a hard "E" .

Growing up in the white-bread suburbs of Harrisburg PA, my summer teen band TNT circa '70-'76 used to cover the Kinks "You Really Got Me." The drummer transcribed the lyrics from the 45 for me and I used to sing in the first verse "... You got me so I can't see bat nine." HUH... SEE BAT NINE???!!! Which, of course, translated in Ray's drunken Limey slurred lingo, "sleep at night," natch! I still sing SBN in my mind's eye whenever I hear that song played. Hehehe!
