Dionysus Records released the Winnipeg Riot compilation, an all Winnipeg CD comp, put together by the amazing artist Darren Merinuk. This was released a few years back and is the coolest of the Winnipeg combos that were around at that time...Darren has GREAT taste in music and art!
Yup, that's a solid comp, and Darren rules very hard. I suggest checking out his blog for updates on the goodness he cranks out: http://intherubberroom.blogspot.com/
You may have noticed that he did the Noises From the Hideout comp cover!
my favorite garage comp is called WYLD Canada...5 volumes of Canadian rockers
you can find it on the o canadarm! blog, I definitely recommend it
Tanx Blackcat69!!!
There's lots more Canuck comps out there. Here's an amazing source for garage band comps:
then go to 60's comp database, lots of modern garage stuff on there as well.
enjoy!
Wow! Thanks for the lists. This should keep me busy for a while! Dave I am aware of your show. I attended UWO a long time back and follow your FB page. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
The It Came From Canada series (there were 5 of them released by OG Records in the mid to late 80's) are absolutely essential for 80's Canuck garage music. OG Records was based in Montreal and run by the members of Deja Voodoo who had VERY good musical taste...and they were great guys always open to cool sounds. The Gruesomes, Deja Voodoo, UIC, 10 Commandments, Supreme Bagg Team, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet and many many others were all on these compilations. Once in awhile i see a used copy of one of these volumes, but they tend to sell pretty quick.
Another LP on OG, Mr Garager's Neighbourhood is sometimes considered the 6th volume in the above series, but it had US bands mixed in with the Canucks...ie Cynics, Thee Fourgiven, Ultra V, Mystic Eyes etc...this was compiled by What Wave zine folks (self plug there).
Well after the 80's garage scene, Stomp Records released the CD compilation called Time Machine The History Of Canadian 60's Garage Punk And Surf (1985-95).
This is a great comp with lots of cool combos (many of the above mentioned plus Smugglers, Treblemakers, Minstrels and lots more). Great liner notes too that'll give you an idea of what the scene was like back then.
Nardwuar The Human Serviette (Vancouver radio personality and all around cool guy) released 3 LP's on CLEO Records...Oh God, My Mom's On Channel 10, Teenage Zit Rock Angst and Clam Chowder and Ice vs Big Macs and Bombers all 3 of these LP's contain some great Canuck garage as well as US and world garage. These were released between 89 and 95 and contain some of the newer combos like Leather Uppers, Evaporators (Nard's combo), Sherlocks and many more. Great comps worth finding!
There's also a series called Oh Canaduh! on Lance Rock Records that had US and Canuck combos playing 60's to 80's Canadian garage punk covers that is quite good. There were at least 2 of these and were released in the later 90's. Some of the covers of the quite good, others not so, but still well worth finding...btw, i'm looking for the 2nd volume in this series.
What Wave zine also releasee 10 cassettes with a lot of Canuck (as well as worldwide) garage type noise. Here's a link to Wave From The Grave, a cassette that came out in 1986 with WW Zine #10:
