I'll start with: 

 

Poison Love by Blood On the Saddle

 

Tex & The Horseheads were part of that original LA cow punk scene. Didnt love everything they did, but most of it. Fun live too.

Did anyone ever see Ragin ' Fire ? Did'nt like the name , but , I sure liked the group. They kicked out thE Country / Punk / Rock'n'Roll jams like nobody's biz , in a manner comparable to X , but , as I told their singer , Melora Zaner , THEY SOUNDED LIKE PATSY CLINE GONE TO HELL AND COME BACK.

When this album came out , I saw The Gibson Bros. for the second time , with Jon Spencer in tow ( I liked him fine , with The Gibsons.), and The Gories opening.

Then there's T.Tex Edwards with On Parole (Different group.) , Tex and The Saddletramps , Loafin' Hyaenas , Swingin' Cornflake Killers , and Punked UP COVERS OF "The Race is On" , "NOTHING eVER hURT mE hALF AS bAD AS lOSING yOU"(Also by The Possum.)"North To Alaska", and others I'm forgetting (It's 2:00 am), done by The NERVEBREAKERS.
 BUT , If we're to talk About Tex, WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT HIS bIG cITY cOUSIN , Iggy Yoakum , and his Famous Pogo Ponies. Starting in the early 90'S (?) , Iggy Yoakum originally ONLY played the remaining redneck bars in Chicago , playing Country versions of Punk songs. It' sbeen done , but not so well. They gradually wrote enough REAL Honky Tonk originals to fill two sets , and only liberally dabbled in covers.  Sadly , there's no product , though a great CD "On The Bar" , produced by Jon Langford , was scouted around , but, no takers.   The band got some sense and split up , but , reformed last summer , proving again they are Chicago's greatest Country band. They don't even agree with me , much less the other 99 1/2% , but , it's true.

I have a 45 or two by them but that's been about it. I don't know that anything else ever got released.. I like what I have and would like to have heard more from them.

You should also check out Pat Todd (former lead man of the Lazy Cowgirls) and the Rank Outsiders. Good stuff there, as well.

And not necessarily "cowpunk," but the Reigning Sound and the Compulsive Gamblers both have some cool countrified garage tracks.

Joey.. love Rank'n'File as well as The Dils, like Cowboy Nation, last I heard Chip was in a band called PCH which was much more of a pop punk in the Bad Religion vein.

The Gun Club - Fire of Love 

Not the purest cow punk, but whatever...

I love quite a bit of the cowpunk from the '80's, which is a big difference from the cowpunk of today. It's hard for me to pinpoint a true favorite LP, especially with bands like Jason & the Scorchers, Green On Red, the Long Ryders, Beat Rodeo, etc. However, one I do love to spin (and drink to) is "Long Gone Dead" by Rank & File. In case you didn't know, they were originally the punk band the Dils, but brothers Chip and Tony Kinman pursued the roots and country music route...Last I heard, they were in the band Cowboy Nation.
