I've never actually read any of his books, but I've been intrigued by them quite a few times. He's just one of those authors I've always passed on at the last minute in favor of something else.

So, if I were to start reading some Crews, what would be the best one to start with? In your humble opinions, of course!

      Thanks in advance.

I've liked Crews's non-fiction a great deal. His memoir, "A Childhood," is an unflinching look at rural southern life, and his collection, "Blood and Grits," is equally unsettling.

I'd start with Cars or Celebration. Celebration is raunchy and magical. Car was the first one I read and a great 'gateway' drug as the story isn't too far out there. Either way, you win.

The Classic Crews Reader can be picked up dirt cheap secondhand.

It's the first thing I read and it got me hooked on his themes and styles. Even if you don't click with it, at the price you can pick up a used copy, it's no big deal to pass it on to someone else.

      I (humbly) agree.
