some names come to mind, beauregard ajax with deaf prescilla, a very dark psyched up album preceeding sgtr peppers! they havea song about a kaleidosope, which is just fuckin lovely! the whole album is musically superb, and keeps u intersted, no stupid blues additions/fillers here!
national harvester from sweden, glue psyche which is very similar to early floyd and hawkwind, but again preceeding the both! the sound is evident on both groups early lp´s,,, and isn´t lol... but its slow strange and dark, some say prog, but choose that word carefully as there is a lot of kak out there!
wailing walls only lp,.. captain beefheart meets the country, its a nice crossover lp, has its faults, but 1st side is a killer, and really recommended! check country of the goose..

cheapo crypt samplers 1 and 2.. has got everything. gories turks 9pound hammer, oblivians headcoates and more more more.. pick it up for 2bucks! great great piece plastic!

Have you looked into automata? Just a little for me but if people like Pat Metheny can interact with electronic controlled analog instruments and say it goes far beyond his expectations then-----it might be a new area for years of new shit. Were not speed metal here but I've seen 350 BPM with total control. Type in over at the tube, I like that saxophone and percussion is a natural. Any guitar player want to describe those necks and what appears to be a movable nut. Picking at standard position and another at the top. This thread is truly amazing how it's blossomed over the last year. Thanks to everyone for tips, links and reports. I have really dug deep into lots of the replies, even playing stuff in our Sonic Nightmares podcast. I'll even do a separate show someday with music I've discovered just from this thread alone!

Since they invented cd's, I've been getting into different styles of music.

Don't know if you'd call it obscure, but the Goodbye Babylon 6-cd boxset of fire & brimstone pre-war gospel is amazing - especially the sermons (over the songs).

Sublime Frequencies releases are on my list too, especially the Middle Eastern and African ones, and the frog song on the Singapore-A-Go-Go cd sounds like some Jamaican dub thing.

Speaking of Africa, for some reason, I really like Pekos/Yoro Diallo (which reminds me of Capt Beefheart) and Tinariwen, although some people say this stuff sounds like Santana.

I'm not a fan of "Tak Tak punk" or "myspace crust" which is where someone in Malaysia, or somewhere else on myspace, has heard Agnostic Front or whatever, and does a straight up imitation with nothing to add. Probably the internet's fault, right?

i vote for sea shanties in general and Ewan MacColl and AL Lloyd's Blow Boys Blow (1960) record in particular. Even Zappa and Beefheart loved that record. My dad turned me on to it 10 years before punkrock changed everything. now it's back in fairly heavy rotation here. I think it's on what or waffles too.
