THE MAGNETIX
When it comes to dirty, sleazy garage-n-roll, I can only think of a few French bands. One of them would be the infamous Magnetix. It's their unique blend of trashy 50's surf and garage that you can't beat: hypnotic drums, poisonous guitars, dangerous vocals. It's raw, sexy, and bitchy, just what you perverts need.
MONDO FUZZ: TWILIGHT OF THE IDLES
an experimental documentary excavating
the underground rock of the Austin, Tx garage scene,
in the tradition of The Decline of Western Civilization and Urgh! A Music War
From the 13th Floor Elevators to the Butthole Surfers, Austin, Tx is known the world over as a rock ‘n’ roll Mecca. Working from the philosophy that a band's essence is best captured during live performance, this low-fi odyssey of digital folk cinema is structured like a concert film mixtape shot guerrilla style in dives and house parties. The filmmakers were granted access to the working musicians forging their visions in the shadows of the self-proclaimed Live Music Capitol of the World who go overlooked by the larger tourist festivals that favor established, out-of-town bands. ‘Underground music created by modern cavemen!’ as Mexico’s Music Inclasificable put it.
This teensploitation trashterpiece of subterranean sinema is accompanied by a cassette from Youth Racket Tapes featuring fifteen screaming fuzz stompers from the bands featured in the film.
Mondo Fuzz screened in Cape Town, South Africa at the annual PSYCH NIGHT music festival. Soon afterwards, the Night Beats, who are featured in the film, visited the city for a special performance. Fest Director Mark Reitz says of the flick, “KILLER soundtrack and a very interesting portrait of youth culture.” http://psychnight.com/
Mondo Fuzz has just been named 'Best Experimental Film' by the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival and an encore screening took place at the Turf Club in St. Paul, with a performance by touring Austin band John Wesley Coleman III, who is featured in the film and contributed the original theme song. Some of the bands from the soundtrack were also given airplay on Minneapolis' famous RADIO K.
