    • Yeah, I was hoping to meet up, too.

You couldn't have missed us: we were the only ones tailgating in the parking lot.

      Don't worry, no big deal.

Just let us know next time you are headed to Detroit. We'll do the same for you and Cleveland.

    • Yes, Please come play Columbia. We are starved for garage here. It's just too laid back a lifestyle here to foster the bone-crunching jackhammer voodoo rythyms I was used to in the NYC/Philadelphia area.

Well, hate to bring up "what used to be", but one of the most famous garagefests in the south was "Sleazefest", a now defunct live music event that was held annually in Chapel Hill. It was the brainchild of Southern Culture On the Skids, and a majority of the bands played the Local 506. Bands like the Fleshtones, Dirtbombs, Paybacks, Greenhornes, Detroit Cobras, Nashville Pussy, and many others played numerous times over the course of years that this was still going on. However, the Local 506 and the Cave which is nearby still book garage bands to play. There is also a killer music shop on the same street called CD Alley, which carries a shit ton of vinyl and cds from Arf! Arf!, Norton, etc. as well as more than enough titles from all your favorite garage, surf, and punk bands. Speaking of Sleazefest, I think it was inspired my a live music event called "Trashfest" that was held in Athens, GA, but I'm not even sure if that's even going on anymore...

Although it's not really garage, there's the "Heavy Rebel Weekender" event held in Winston-Salem, NC every July 4 weekend, and it's more centered around the psychobilly/rockabilly hot rod scene although they have booked some garagepunk bands over the years...

      Sleazefest fuckin' wailed....miss it so...

    • Well there's at least a small garage/rnr scene in Cola-town...there's Say Brother (southerndirtyblues style garage), Norwegian Blue (surfy garage pop) & my band, the Get Wets (party garage heavily r&b/surf inspired)....check 'em out...would really dig gettin' to see y'all live in Soda city...

    • Although I've been listening to garage and Nugget-y stuff for a long time, and although I've even been playing it with my own "rockin' post-teen combo" for a while, I'm not really aware of a "scene" in this part of the country -- I'm not too far from Columbia, SC.

Is there such a thing around here? Festivals? Record stores that carry this kind of music? Bands that might be interested in splitting gigs? Help ease my isolation.

    • Well, there aren't anymore tables left but they also don't like to accept "crafters". I guess they make exceptions but the page info says they like to maintain a balance between flea market and craft fair. It still sounds cool and I can always look into being involved at a later date.

      Thanks again.

    • Oh wow! that sounds awesome. I will have to check that one out. I just found out about one in Silver Springs, Maryland. It's a craft fair that runs from April to November every Saturday and its only $40 for a 10x10 spot. That is pretty cheap compared to some other craft fairs.

Thanks for the info on the Philly punk rock flea market. I have been looking for craft fairs in Philly... since it's so close it would be ideal. I am going to contact the city of commerse to see if they know of any.

    • Philly's Punk Rock Flea Market is this Sunday , not sure if there are still tables.  R5 Productions runs it.

    • Wow, this is excellent! We will totally hit up these spots. LOVE!

    • My BFF and I are taking a garage rock road trip. I will be driving up from  Louisville, KY and she's coming in from Philadelphia, PA to see the New Bomb Turks on June 11 in Cleveland. We're pretty stoked, we're dying to make this our best punk rock road trip ever. Would any of you find folks point us in the way of good food, fun record stores and maybe somewhere to get a tattoo?

    • I am a big ol' hunka burnin' fan, too. Not only of the older stuff (Sun Records, Stax, Blues & Delta Blues, etc.), but of the garage-y stuff, too.

Memphis has, obviously: The Oblivians, Jay Reatard, Goner Records, the Hi-Tone and Buckaneer venues, and so much more.

What are some other facets that can be added to the list of Memphis' garage rock jewels in the crown?

Thanks for the tip on that book.
