    • I'm making a trip out to Chicago in the middle of October and was wondering if anyone had any record store recommendations. What places carry a solid collection of vinyl? I'd love to find places that carry older punk and garage stuff, as well as places that have 7"'s and the like from newer bands. Any thoughts?

    • Lookin for other psycho-dilly rocknrollers who like drinkin and smokin and hearin gooood tunes while you do the two. In October I'm gonna start DJing at a downtown bar (yet to be decided which) - doing a late afternoon into evening set of punk rock, lo-fi, bluegrass, psyche, and any other dirty music my heart desires. Lemme know if you are out there and interested. Guest djs are fun.

    • Some advanced hype for a highly anticipated debut record from The Aces out of Santa Rosa CA. Their debut record "No One Rides For Free" will hit Europe in Oct and US in NOV being released from El Toro Records..... Hell the band was turned down by Alligator and Blind Pig for being to raw, punk'ish and not having a van..... The album is full of punk trace rhythms and can be described as a distorted wall of sound topped by wailing harp. What's cool is The Aces do not have a bass player and instead go with a lead and rhythm guitar combination. The Aces are currently seeking booking agencies and publicist who can take them where they need to go! www.acesfan.com www.reverbnation.com/acesfan (4 song advanced listen) www.myspace.com/theaces www.eltororecords.com

    • I'm looking for musicians of questionable ability for a weekly casual jam session.

I've been "playing" electric guitar for 3 years and taking lessons for over 2. I'd rate my skill as intermediate....but sloppy. I wouldn't say I have any influences, but I dig blues, rockabilly, surf, punk, etc. I "know" about 30 songs: "Long Cool Woman", "Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo", "Bohemian Like You", etc. I've recently started writing my own crappy songs too.

      Goals:

      1. Play music
      2. Have fun
      3. Improve ability
      4. Friends

BTW, I'm 47 (It's the new 46!) so, please don't answer unless your at least 21 and less than dead.

    • I had posted this awhile back in response to the exact same question, by Maribel, so I'll re-post it. If anyone has anything else to add feel free because I most likely missed some stuff... Here's a little something I came up with off of the top of my head, It's kind of long so bear with me. * Dives w/ Live Music * http://themutinychicago.com/ - Big sign painted on their window "Bands Wanted" so there's always some kind of band playing here. Sometimes you get lucky and the band is alright, other times you won't and they'll suck. http://www.drinkatcalsbar.com/ - My personal favorite, small, dirty, and cheap. Could you ask for anything more? When there are bands the cover is usually $5, so if they're terrible you don't feel as cheated as if you payed, say, $10. The bands play right on the floor so it has that old school, basement punk rock show vibe. * Just Plain Dives * http://www.yelp.com/biz/two-way-lounge-chicago-2 - Really weird mix of people (Gangbangers/Hipsters/Old Drunks) but still recommended. http://www.whirlaway.net/index.html - The bartender Maria is a total sweetheart. Protip: As tempting as it may be do NOT, I repeat, do NOT sit on the sofa. OK jukebox. http://www.yelp.com/biz/l-and-l-tavern-chicago - They serve absinthe here and have a good jukebox. However, sometimes it gets overrun with annoying college students who are "slumming it". http://www.yelp.com/biz/innertown-pub-chicago - A little divey oasis with a decent jukebox tucked away in a residential neighborhood. Got thrown out of here once, but I don't hold that against them. http://www.yelp.com/biz/olas-liquor-chicago - Ahhh Ola's, what can I say about Ola's, Well it's small, the owner is Polish so you can never be sure if she's insulting you or not, and I once saw a man drink a flaming shot of Yukon Jack out of his glass eye here. I think it's safe to say that I love Ola's. You get the feeling that this is where Bukowski would drink. * Semi-Respectable Drinking Establishments * http://www.californiaclipper.com/ - Pretty cool bar. They play mostly Rockabilly/Country/Blues. I got thrown out of here once too, ahhhh good times. No cover so that's a plus. http://www.myspace.com/liarsclub2006 - Cock Rock/Metal Bar Tolerable in very SMALL, and I mean REALLY small, doses. http://www.delilahschicago.com/ - What was once the jewel in the crown of Chicago Punk Rock dives has now become a caricature of it's former self. I don't know if it's the Lincoln Park Chads & Trixies, the liquor snobs paying $30 for a glass of scotch and $10 and up for some obscure microbrew, or the nightly poser fashion show with outfits supplied by The Alley, but I totally hate this place now. If you've never been I suppose you should experience it at least once. * Not worth your time or money * http://www.exitchicago.com/ - The Exit is dead to me. Avoid at all costs. For all of the reasons I hate Delilah's I hate this place even more. It's like the Punk Rock episode of Quincy brought to life. So there's my suggestions, brought to you by many years of black outs and behavior that had me apologizing to my friends the next day. Hope it helps. Cheers.

    • Hello, I'm in Michigan (Detroit and more) and Chicago this week and I don't know where to go/what to do.
Have you got any suggestions on bars, music clubs, concerts, record stores, cool things to see/do?

      Thank you very much

    • There used to be Retrospective II (I think it's currently out of print) - with a really good song I've heard titled "Things That Are Important." This particular songs' sound quality was pretty good if memory serves me well. Back in the 80's there was a cassette comp of 10 Lost Souls songs put out by Green Light - it gets good reviews but as you mentioned, sound quality varies track to track. That was during the garage revival, when they first started reissuing this stuff in the mid 80's....I was a kid back then (I'm 31 now). Your right about "My Love I Won't Admit", it sounds a little like a garage oriented Byrds or Beau Brummels - it's a solid song.

    • August 20, 2009 11:47 AM CDT
    • There are a couple Lost Souls tracks, along with a bunch of other Denny Carleton stuff, compiled on this: http://www.amazon.com/Retro/dp/B0014HUJGI/ref=dm_cd_album_lnk?ie=UT... I have copies of the two Lost Souls songs, but they must’ve come from somewhere else, as their quality is far inferior to the sound samples. Anyway, “My Love I Won’t Admit” has a Byrds/Beau Brummels feel to it, and “Josephine” is a bit of a heavier track, with R&B influences.

    • Hi,

Would anyone be able to help me track down some of the songs by this 60's Cleveland band? The Lost Souls never released an lp or 45 although their lead singer Denny Carleton went on to play with the Choir and released a fine power pop lp titled Color With Crayons (this guy is now a Jesus freak by the way). But anyhow, if memory serves me well, I remember the Lost Souls tracks to be really strong in quality and I believe the band progressed on to psychedelia. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
