    • I am currently reading Max Brooks (Mel Brooks kid) other book "World War Z (the Zombie War). Pretty cool. I hear they may make a film out of it too. I'd pay to see that.

Has anyone seen Romero's "Diary of the Dead" yet? I saw it on the Marquee of our local rep house, but when I came back it was gone! Post it here.

    • Fulci's Zombi is one hell of a good flick too. Especially the infamous eye scene (watch it, you'll know what I mean) and zombie vs. shark.

    • I actually traced it down to a small shaft on the gear drive assembly that engages with this clutch type doohickey. Small and complex. I even bought a reprint of the service repair book, but it just is not that easy of a fix. Once I get so far there will be no turning back, and looking at all the half finished projects around here I now know myself better. There are a few people left in the LA area that can fix these, so I need to pony up some cash before they die off.

    • Yeah, i got four pinball machines and two jukeboxes, i have room for MAYBE half that. I have my Gottlieb just sitting randomly in the middle of the living room floor because i have nowhere to actually put it.

One thing i've noticed about selectors, independent of model, is that they usually operate on the same principle: A big metal disc with weird flanges sticking out of it rotates around, looking to make contact with flanges on an opposing such device ((more or less)). Basically, when you make your selection, the corresponding flange on the part that doesn't rotate pops up ((or out)). Then the rotating thing spins around until its metal flange((s)) comes into contact with the flange you just raised by pushing the selection buttons. That causes a connection that rotates the carousel to the right slot, then the arm grabs the record from the slot and off ya go. Sometimes it's just a case of the flange on the rotating part being bent or misaligned. Usually if you go rooting around you can see what is or isn't happening, like if the two flanges just miss each other while the one is spinning, you can probably bend it ((like Beckham, or Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick & Tich)) a little so it makes proper contact.

And, then again, maybe it's something completely different.

    • No pinball machines, but have a Seeburg HF-G 100, its a '53 model and was the first Hi-Fi juke. Have had it for about 15 years now. Sounds incredible when you play an original 50's early 60's pressing 7". Real deep rich bass. Its having it's issues though with the selector. Took it apart just enough to realise I'm out of my league with the mechanics of this thing. Would love to have a late 40's Rockola for my 78's and an 70/80's era box for my orphaned punk singles, but, I have to resign to the fact that it's not going to happen in my little house.

    • I got that same feeling around these machines, pinball, old jukeboxes especially. I've been elbowing my grandmother for years to leave me with hers. It has all these 50's and 60's 45's that havn't seen daylight in about fifty years. I actually get edgy when any of my younger cousins get near it with thier greasy little mits. It takes about thirty seconds or so to flip a page for its menu. They would keep pressing the button expecting it to turn faster, "I will cut your fucking hand off if you keep doing that."

    • Just as long as the rise in subscription rates isn't too ridiculous, I can handle it.

And they'd better keep the Underground Garage channel on the air, since it is something totally unique. I know both companies each have their own channels for punk, hair metal, oldies, etc., and I know they have to eliminate redundancy, and I know some people are going to be pissed about losing their favorite channels, and I feel bad for their losses, but PLEASE don't touch the Underground Garage.

    • as someone who has worked on shows on both of the satellite providers, i can tell you that from day 1, i figured they were going to have to merge... XM has better technology; Sirius has a lot more heavy hitter celebrity DJs... but they are competing for the same slice of audience with the same business model and parallel third party partners in content sharing (ie: The Dish, etc)

i am also fairly certain, given the way mergers & acquisitions work, when those two outlets become one, a lot of the shows that are similar to each other will be cut down severely. that's a by-product of M&A anyway....

sponsors are not needed for having a show/channel on either XM or Sirius BUT, that said, the programmer needs to have a LOT OF CLOUT in order to draw listeners and new subscribers. you can be a legit DJ and get a shift on an existing channel within either of those outlets but you DO have to bring your listenership with you. there are a LOT of off-air things that you need to do too.

its way way more complicated than i can explain here

but in a nutshell - YES pretty much a merger WILL jack up subscription rates because of lack of competition (which also suggests that the FCC and FTC will be looking at the merger with a microscope) BUT more than that... stockholders will want a return on their investment and in order to buoy stock, they're gonna have to EARN more and the quickest way is to raise prices

    • I'm a Sirius subscriber, and I listen to the Underground Garage for the most part. Yes, I'll admit Little Steven throws in stuff that's not really "underground," but I still love the channel, because it's turned me onto a lot of stuff that I didn't know about before. I recently bought CDs by Syl Sylvain and the Rich Kids, and I plan on getting stuff from the Mummies and Vertebrats in the near future.

BTW, I happen to like that song by Kelly Osbourne, "Come Dig Me Out." LS said he discovered it by accident when one of his employees was playing it on his computer at work. No, it's not a "garage" song, but it's still a great song. Very punk like, at least.

As for playing Springsteen, well, lets face it, he does have a vested interest in promoting the new album. I'm not crazy about the new album, but I can live with it. There are a few older Springsteen songs that LS plays which do have a "garagey" sound, i.e. select tracks from "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River."

I'd also like to point out that I'm glad LS throws some variety into the mix, because if he played nothing but "pure" garage rock, I would get bored with it.

As for sponsors, you really don't need them for satellite radio. You just have to convince Sirius or XM to give you your own channel. Sponsors are needed for syndicated shows on terrestrial radio.

As for the merger itself, I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand, it could help to keep satellite radio in business, but on the other hand, I'm worried that making it one company will jack up the subscription rates because of the lack of competition.

    • I think there's still lots of corporate money behind satellite radio... I have heard Sirius and it's cool (compared to regular radio nowwadays), but it's still very corporate and controlled... especially Little Steven's "Underground" Garage... there's nothing "underground" about Kelly Osbourne and Bruce Springsteen.

    • This is the 1st I've heard of it... I have never listened to satellite radio.

But, what would it take to get the GaragePunk Podcast Network on satellite radio?
      Sponsors.

Would something like that be feasible? Could it remain the GaragePunk Podcast Network as we know it, or would it by default be forced to go the route of other "underground" garage rock radio?

Just some thoughts, interesting though. Discuss!

    • I don't think you can convert a Quicktime file into anything else unless you have QuickTime Pro.

2nd, I believe there's a discussion in this very group forum here on cross-posting your shows to Ass of Rock...

    • OK, I just figured out the answer to question #2, so I just need a solution to question #1....

    • March 15, 2008 11:58 AM CDT
    • How does one convert a Quicktime file so that it may be played on Audacity and Musicmatch jukebox? Specifically, I downloaded the CoCoComa file to my computer. It plays just fine on Quicktime but it won't play on Audacity when I import the file to my latest podcast and it won't open and play in Musicmatch jukebox. BTW, I still can't download the Fabienne Delsol to my PC.

Also, Lord Muck had the detailed instructions to cut & paste the link from Blip to Ass of Rock on the old forum but I guess I didn't print it out (tho' I swore that I had) Where is that link?

    • What's in your bag in terms of the greats of psychedelic/acid/hippy trippy/60's cinema? Of course, El Topo has to be on the list of anything psychedelic and cinema: ...and Head (proof that drugs even make The Monkees artistic): ...and of course, there's "Mr. Devil" himself, Kenneth Anger: ...and then I Drink Your Blood- by far the greatest hippies eat meat pies filled with rabid blood and become rabid zombies because they gave an old man LSD film ever made: add as you will...

    • I only know of one drive-in that ever shows older stuff. Every Labor Day weekend, the Highway 18 Drive-In in Jefferson, WI (about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee on, uh, Highway 18) has a dusk-to-dawn show. The first three movies are usually whatever leftover fare from the end of the summer that the guy who runs it has on hand, but from movie #4 on, he digs into his personal collection of old films, most of which are from the 70s. He's been doing this for a few years, and usually gets a pretty packed house (which usually dwindles down to a handful of diehards who're determined to stick it out until the morning). He's shown some pretty fab stuff - I remember getting the willies scared out of me by ALIEN, which is a lot scarier when you're sitting in a misty field at 3AM than it is when you're in your living room. The absolute best was when he showed THE WARRIORS; he timed it *just right* so that the end of the movie - in which the titular gang makes it to Coney Island just as the sun is coming up - coincided with the sunrise. He's broken out the video projector once or twice in the past, though, so beware.

    • I saw Hannibal at a drive in as well. Can't remember what it was called but it was in Memphis. It was a double feature with the abysmal 3000 Miles to Graceland which was ironic because I think we were about 3 miles from graceland.

    • One of my first drive-in memories was seeing Little Big Man when I was just a little little kid. We'd get some junk food, they had a little swing set or something for us kiddies, then maybe a cartoon, then it was "go to sleep!" in the back seat while my parents tried to watch the movie they came for. Later it became a place to get drunk under the stars on an off night when nothing else was going on. $4 a car ment 8 in the car and maybe a couple more in the trunk. Budget motel for many people too. Miss them. Closest one I know of is about 50 miles away from me, The Mission Drive-In, now dubbed the Mission Tiki Drive-In. They have to show what the public wants to stay in business, but they often have special events. They have another 'Tiki Invasion' scheduled in May. Last one was lots of fun. They have regular releases on two other screens and bands and B-Movie flics on another. Check out the link. http://www.tikiinvasion.com/
