    • Hey, a comics fan! Evan is super-cool, Pirate Corp$! was great. If gin makes a man mean, rum must make a man a drooling idiot rummy.

Very cool info & recipes. Thanx! Honestly, I only bought Ransom Old Tom because I like Gin and it looked like something unusual to taste test (and I do enjoy taste testing the booze). Great to find out the history. The murder thing is interesting. Anyone remember the comic "Milk & Cheese" and their saying: "Gin makes a man mean"?

Btw: forgot the garnish for the Martinez, a lemon twist.

      Old Tom Gin

      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      Jump to: navigation, search

Old Tom Gin (or Tom Gin or Old Tom) is a lightly sweetened Gin popular in 18th-century England that now is rarely available. It is slightly sweeter than London Dry, but slightly drier than Dutch/Holland Gin/Jenever, thus is sometimes called The Missing Link.[1]

The name Old Tom Gin purportedly came from wooden plaques shaped like a black cat (an "Old Tom") mounted on the outside wall of some pubs above a public walkway in the 18th century England. Owing to a scandalous news report of a tragedy involving a murdered family, gin was outlawed and went underground, changing from a cloudy liquid to its modern clear form so as to appear like water. After a pedestrian deposited a penny in the cat's mouth, they would place their lips around a small tube between the cat's paws. From the tube would come a shot of Gin, poured by the bartender inside the pub.[2]

Old Tom Gin was formerly made under license by a variety of distillers around the world; however one was recently relaunched by Hayman's distillery based on an original recipe.[3] Since then a number of other companies have followed suit such as, Both's, Secret Treasures, Jensens, Ransom and even The Dorchester Hotel. [4]The first written record of Old Tom Gin being used in the Tom Collins cocktail was the 1891 book, The Flowing Bowl: When and What to Drink.[5

    • Never had or even seen Old Tom.  Am I right that it was the Tom used in the creation of the Tom Collins?

    • Yum! Keep us updated on new recipes, folks!

      Jeff, here's something similar:

      Ford Cocktail

Styled after a classic gin Martini, this Old Tom variation invites a bit of Bénédictine into the mix.

      2 oz. Old Tom gin

      1 oz. Dolin Dry vermouth

      1/4 oz. Bénédictine

      2 dashes orange bitters

      Ice cubes

      Tools: mixing glass, barspoon, strainer

      Glass: coupe

      Garnish: orange peel

Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish by expressing the orange oils over the drink and then discarding the peel.

    • Been very into Ransom Old Tom Gin lately. Been making a drink called a Martinez with it:

      2 oz. Old Tom Gin

      1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

      1/4 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

      Dash Old Fashioned Orange Bitters

They say it's how the Manhattan transitioned into the Martini, and it's pretty delicious. I'll have to try your recipe. And I totally dig the Buffalo Trace with Fuzz as swell! TGIF!!

      Cheers!

    • ooo I like the bulb idea for the kitchen, unfortunately I have those little bastard spotlights in the rest of my flat and because the electrics are dodgy half of them flash like a disco which isn't so spooky.

I want to see a photo of that giant doll costume, that'd be awesome!

    • Mike:  A classic costume is a solid choice.  I'm diggin' it that you've had your place decked for a month now.  Black trash bags work great.  You could swap out your light bulbs for green ones or if you use fluorescents you could use bulbs that are of a lower voltage (this will cause the light to flicker and "brown out" a bit).  You could also get some glow sticks and place them behind some of your favorite knick-knacks to draw attention and create an eire glow.

This year I think I'm going to be an uncanny giant Kewpie doll. Creepin' in the uncanny valley!

    • Dracula, but I'm only doing it with a dress shirt and a cape. But I'm going to town a bit more on my living room. I've had it decorated for a month now but for Halloween itself I'm going to darken the place with black bin liners. Any other cheap ideas to sort out a Halloween home are welcomed.

    • The most wonderful time of the year is upon us once again!  Time to get your wigs and digs in line for the ball.

So, Guys and Ghouls, what dead threads will you be adorned in this Halloween?

    • Particularly those in Iowa, North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Colorado and especially Ohio: Since you're on this list, you already know that we're down to the wire in a very close campaign. I'm not endorsing or opposing anyone, but just urge y'all to maybe turn off the stereo for a few weeks, read up on the candidates and their positions, watch the debates, be wary of cable pundits on both sides and, most important, vote your conscience as well as your economic self-interest.

      Thanks, Rick

    • Starting with the obvious, "The Car". Oh, if you're a Smiths fan, there is a Consul Capri in the opening few seconds of the video for "There is a Light That Never Goes Out". Anyway, I digress. "Gattaca" has loads of horrorshow old cars I'd like to have myself, like a Citroen DS (Henri Chapron model), Studebaker Avanti and the Rover P6.

    • i have not seen No Time for Sergeants, though i will add that to my list of shit to check out. Andy Griffith jams in A Face in the Crowd. I was impressed.

As far as old cartoons, they always catch my attention. The older they are, the more interested I am. And, like, it amazes me how you can see such a change in what is socially acceptable over time through cartoons. Like the old bugs bunny cartoons with the hunter in blackface. No fucking way that could pass on tv now. On screen stuff in general is like a time-traveling trip through society.
