Imbibe article, and here's an interesting recipe mit beer:

      Tom Terrific

Fresh citrus and a splash of hoppy IPA brighten up this Old Tom sipper.

1 3/4 oz. Old Tom gin

      1/2 oz. Cherry Heering

1/2 oz. Demerara simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water)

      1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice

      2 oz. IPA beer

      Ice cubes

      Tools: shaker, strainer

      Glass: Collins

      Garnish: orange wheel

Combine all ingredients, except beer, and shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice cubes into a Collins glass, top with beer and garnish.

Milk & Cheese are swell! So is gin, any style.

Whiskey, however, does make a man mean!

Rum simply makes a man dead drunk...

"the comic "Milk & Cheese" and their saying: "Gin makes a man mean"?"

I had a M&C t-shirt: "Gin makes a man mean.  Everybody booze up and riot!"

Hey, a comics fan! Evan is super-cool, Pirate Corp$! was great. If gin makes a man mean, rum must make a man a drooling idiot rummy.

Very cool info & recipes. Thanx! Honestly, I only bought Ransom Old Tom because I like Gin and it looked like something unusual to taste test (and I do enjoy taste testing the booze). Great to find out the history. The murder thing is interesting. Anyone remember the comic "Milk & Cheese" and their saying: "Gin makes a man mean"?

Btw: forgot the garnish for the Martinez, a lemon twist.

      Such A Crazy Story!

      Old Tom Gin

      From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      Jump to: navigation, search

Old Tom Gin (or Tom Gin or Old Tom) is a lightly sweetened Gin popular in 18th-century England that now is rarely available. It is slightly sweeter than London Dry, but slightly drier than Dutch/Holland Gin/Jenever, thus is sometimes called The Missing Link.[1]

The name Old Tom Gin purportedly came from wooden plaques shaped like a black cat (an "Old Tom") mounted on the outside wall of some pubs above a public walkway in the 18th century England. Owing to a scandalous news report of a tragedy involving a murdered family, gin was outlawed and went underground, changing from a cloudy liquid to its modern clear form so as to appear like water. After a pedestrian deposited a penny in the cat's mouth, they would place their lips around a small tube between the cat's paws. From the tube would come a shot of Gin, poured by the bartender inside the pub.[2]

Old Tom Gin was formerly made under license by a variety of distillers around the world; however one was recently relaunched by Hayman's distillery based on an original recipe.[3] Since then a number of other companies have followed suit such as, Both's, Secret Treasures, Jensens, Ransom and even The Dorchester Hotel. [4]The first written record of Old Tom Gin being used in the Tom Collins cocktail was the 1891 book, The Flowing Bowl: When and What to Drink.[5

Yum! Keep us updated on new recipes, folks!

      Jeff, here's something similar:

      Ford Cocktail

Styled after a classic gin Martini, this Old Tom variation invites a bit of Bénédictine into the mix.

      2 oz. Old Tom gin

      1 oz. Dolin Dry vermouth

      1/4 oz. Bénédictine

      2 dashes orange bitters

      Ice cubes

      Tools: mixing glass, barspoon, strainer

      Glass: coupe

      Garnish: orange peel

Combine all ingredients and stir with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish by expressing the orange oils over the drink and then discarding the peel.

Been very into Ransom Old Tom Gin lately. Been making a drink called a Martinez with it:

      2 oz. Old Tom Gin

      1 oz. Sweet Vermouth

      1/4 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

      Dash Old Fashioned Orange Bitters

They say it's how the Manhattan transitioned into the Martini, and it's pretty delicious. I'll have to try your recipe. And I totally dig the Buffalo Trace with Fuzz as swell! TGIF!!

      Cheers!
