    • Miike, it's beer, you *can't* over-think it!!!

I will always try any drink with weird ingredients in it, but will always stick w/ the Reinheitsgebot for my go-tos.

BTW, I've been asking for people's fave beers, esp. malty ones and Belgians. Any shout-outs?

    • Yeah, after posting I kinda noticed I missed the point but thought it was an interesting fact. But then Nigeria has like 20 times as many people as Ireland.

Is it still really beer if it isn't made from hops and barely? I mean in Germany it isn't, in Britain for instance cider is when you make it from apples. But still you find flavours and extra stuff in the actual 'beer' that you don't get in Germany like honey in Waggledance.

If you ignore both ingredients and use seaweed is it beer because it's savoury and brown? Maybe I've been living with Germans for too long and overthinking this.

    • Today, Hafensabine's drummer Bäne showed his love to the band and to Rock'n'Roll with a brand new tattoo of the anchor in the Hafensabine band logo!

He had a completely different picture in mind at first, but then spontaneously asked around in Facebook if he should have the band anchor tattooed instead. Twenty "Likes" were enough for him to change his mind and there he goes...

Does anyone in this group has a tattoo of their own band logo or the one of your favourite band? We're curious who else is as crazy as our drummer and how many "Dead Moons" we will find in the GPHO ;)

Please, post a picture as well!

I saw C.H.U.D. when it came out on video and remember being disappointed that it wasn't a total gorefest or something (happened a lot when I was a kid), watching it again for the first time in 20 years it stands up pretty well. Never heard of Pigs but I just looked it up, I think I prefer the alternative title Daddy's Deadly Darling. Either way I need to see it.

Was Wendy O. really supposed to be a teenager? I know most of the other women were SUPPOSED TO be teens....I took a date to see "C.H.U.D." when it came out. We were both kind of bummed that it was'nt worse than it was ! I like Humanoids From The Deep a lot , tho'.  I'll watch out for "Razorback" ....Ever seen "Pigs"?.

    • No-Mayo Potato Salad (Fawk, YES!)

      Ingredients

2 1/2 pounds Idaho potatoes, cut into quarters lengthwise, then chopped into large chunks
1/2 cup beef consomme or broth
      3 tablespoons capers
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
      2 stalks celery, finely chopped
1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped
      1 lemon, zested and juiced
      2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

      Preparation

Place the potatoes in a medium pot. Fill with cold water and bring to a boil. Add a liberal amount of salt and cook the potatoes until they are tender, about 12-15 minutes. Once the potatoes are tender, drain and return them to the warm pot to dry them out.
      Step

Add the beef consomme, capers, red bell pepper, celery, onion, lemon zest and juice, red wine vinegar and EVOO. Season with salt and pepper. This dish tastes great either warm or cold.

    • Asian-German Fusion Potato Salad

      Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds red potatoes, scrubbed
      1/2 cup frozen mixed vegetables
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
      1 large yellow onion, diced
      1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
      salt and pepper to taste
      1 cup mayonnaise
      1 tablespoon lemon juice
      1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
      1/2 tablespoon sesame oil
      1/2 tablespoon hot sauce
      1 teaspoon wasabi powder
      1 teaspoon ground ginger
      1 teaspoon ground turmeric
      1 cup cooked, cubed ham
      1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

      Directions

Place the potatoes in a large pot of boiling salted water, and cook about 10 minutes. Stir in the frozen mixed vegetables, and continue cooking 10 to 12 minutes, until potatoes and vegetables are tender. Transfer to a large bowl. Cut potatoes while still hot, into 1 inch pieces. Set aside to cool.

Heat the olive oil in a skillet. Place the onion in the skillet, and season with garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir until tender.

In a bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, sesame oil, hot sauce, wasabi powder, ginger, and turmeric. Season with salt and pepper.
Toss the cooled potato and vegetable mixture with the onions, mayonnaise mixture, ham, and cilantro until evenly coated. Chill until serving.

      Doncha just love progress?

    • March 27, 2012 3:51 PM CDT
    • Yeah. One interview I read said the REASON it was all women in the group was BECAUSE the women weren't being arrested. I take this as a sign that Putin ain't fuckin' around now. AND, this time PR went too far, staging a protest song at a church. Putin probably got really upset 'bout THAT, being a devout man himself and all.

Nice of them to do this to these women, huh? Shows that compassion and caring, ya know? Supporters of the band say they are concerned about the young children the detainees leave behind.

I am not a betting person, but I reckon some Russian authorities want to score points with the boss and teach everyone a 'lesson' as they are going for a harsher penalty than normal.

      *sigh*

Yeah, old Putin's back in the saddle, and it sounds as though he wants to be a cross between W. and Stalin- honest elections are out, queers are out, asking questions is out, real reporting is out, hell, even being a woman appears to be out (perhaps he's taking a page from our GOP as far as that goes)!

Medvedev will just be a name in history books, guess he didn't kiss enough ass.

It's too bad, those few years of freedom, 89-93? have been wasted. As one writer (W Gibson, mebbe?) said, "Those poor fuckers never could get a fair shake no matter the government in power."

Let's see: Drug-resistant TB in prisons, aging population, falling birth rates, mass alcoholism, Mafiya/KGB-types as the movers in gov./business/security, I'm guessing the intelligentsiya are emigrating, if they can, so that's a brain-drain. As you say, not a rosy picture...

Hope Putin is publicly embarrassed to do this to the girls, so he'll turn them out with a warning.

    • Hey Dave: As you may know, I've been following the PR story for a while via my blog. What concerns me most is that several of the band members are now being held PRE-HEARING in a Russian jail. My imagination can take me to some very dark places for these women.

While Russia may not be the most extreme of countries in terms of repressive regimes, their record regarding the thwarting of democracy and the treatment of inmates in prisons should give us all pause. After all, these women are in a BAND, though indeed the band is a vehicle to get their pro-democracy message out.

The message I take away from this story is that things are taking a very dark turn in Russia. Stay tuned.

      dave said

Hm, well, sure the Muslim countries are most repressive, there was just a news item about a muslim girl committing suicide after being forced to marry her rapist (!!). but I think that Russia's best period is still 89/90 with the Velvet Revolutions happening.

And I've gotta say, 2-party systems are old, as you said in an earlier post, we're as fucked as the UK now with our lose/lose candidates.

And to bring things full-circle, if those women had been Muslim here in the States, they would have had an awfully hard time, so does this mean that we're worse than the Muslims now?

      Food for thought...

    • Korean Glass Noodles – Jap Chae

This dish can also be spelled: Jab Chae, Chap Chae. The type of noodles used in this dish is made from sweet potato starch and translucent when cooked, which is how they got their English name, “glass noodles.” They are also gluten free and are wonderfully springy and light. I love making this dish in the summertime, because you can serve these noodles at room temperature or even slightly chilled.

You can find them at Asian markets or online at Komart. Just boil the dried noodles for 5 minutes, drain and toss with sesame oil so that they don’t stick together:

      Korean Glass Noodles

You can use any type of fresh mushrooms, like shitake or even the standard button mushroom, but traditionally, dried wood ear mushrooms, found in most Asian markets, are used. Just rehydrate the dried wood ear mushrooms in warm water for 15 minutes, drain and they’ll be ready for your stir-fry. The spinach was shy – didn’t want to jump in the group shot.

      Vegetables

Stir fry the carrots and onions until softened, oh…about 1 minute…but it really depends on how thin you slice your onions and carrots:

      Carrots and onions

Add garlic, scallions and mushrooms. Fry 30 seconds:

Then add spinach, noodles, soy sauce, sugar, fry 2-3 minutes until noodles are heated through. Turn off heat, toss with sesame seeds and remaining 1 1/2 tsp of sesame oil:

Korean Glass Noodles – Jap Chae/Chap Chae

Serves 4-6 as part of multicourse meal

1/2 pound dried Korean sweet potato noodles
2 1/2 teaspoons sesame oil, divided
      1 tablespoon cooking oil
      3/4 cup thinly sliced onions
      2 carrots, cut into matchsticks
      2 cloves garlic, finely minced
3 stalks green onions, cut into 1″ lengths
1/2 cup mushrooms, thinly sliced (shitake, wood ear)
1/2 lb spinach, washed well and drained
      2 tablespoons soy sauce
      2 teaspoons sugar
      1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Fill a large pot with water and boil. When water is boiling, add the noodles and cook for 5 minutes. Immediately drain and rinse with cold water. Drain again and toss with only 1 tsp of the sesame oil. Use kitchen shears to cut noodles into shorter pieces, about 8 inches in length. Set aside.

In bowl, mix soy sauce & sugar together. Add the cooking oil in a wok or large saute pan on high heat and swirl to coat. When the cooking oil is hot but not smoking, fry onions and carrots, until just softened, about 1 minute. Add the garlic, green onions and mushrooms, fry 30 seconds. Then add the spinach, soy sauce, sugar and the noodles. Fry 2-3 minutes until the noodles are cooked through. Turn off heat, toss with sesame seeds and the remaining 1 1/2 tsp of sesame oil.
