Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it!
Looks awesome! Can't wait to see it!
I was right! :)
Maybe, I guess you thought it was Japanese.
YES , iVE ALWAYS SEEN AND READ IT PRONOUNCED "UDO TARO MAN" , PHONETICALLY.
If that's not right , how is it pronounced?
Someone taped their first show in Chicago . I can be heard shouting all the Japanese I knew -
Gojira ! Radon ! Ghidora ! Minilla ! Udo Taro Man ! Udo Taro Dao Man ! Furankenshutain !
Looks great! Wish I understood Japanese! :)

Radio What Wave Playlist May 8/2014. All Teenage Head show to help celebrate the book release of: Gods Of The Hammer
1. The Flamin' Groovies....Teenage Head....from the LP of the same name and this is where Teenage Head got their name back in 1975.
2. Teenage Head....Picture My Face....live recording from 10/31/78 and broadcast on Q107 in Toronto.
3. Teenage Head...Little Boxes....as above.
4. Teenage Head....Tearin' Me Apart....their first single from 1978.
5. Teenage Head...Top Down....another 7" from 1978 and my absolute fave version of Top Down as they bring in the motorcycle sound effects and the Beach Boy style harmony vocals. If they had broken up at this point, this record would have made them legends in their own time....but Teenage Head did so many more things in their career....ie manic performances, riots, appeared in a movie or 2, released many records, CD's etc.
6. Teenage Head....Curtain Jumper....from their self titled debut LP that came out in 1979. If you're searching for their first LP, go for the second issue on OPM Music from 1981....WAY better mix and the picture on the rear cover of the LP is smaller than the original. The difference between the 2 releases is quite apparent on even a casual listen.
7. Teenage Head...Wild One.....recorded live in Edmonton 2/1980 and broadcast over the radio. Around this time, the band was moving towards it's peak. Constant gigging, partying and touring across Canada to insane audiences!! Then the SHIT started to happpen....if you were in Toronto on June 2/1980, the place to be was Ontario Place, an outdoor facility which was hosting live bands. On the bill, the one man band Nash The Slash!! Master of the tape loop, electric mandolin, electric violin, load of other electronic noises as well as being covered in tape from head to toe. Yep, this was the act to catch......except Nash was opening up for out heroes, Teenage Head!! The streetcars, trolleys and subways were packed with kids going to see Teenage Head at this show. Hot on their second LP, Frantic City and the AM radio (but only in Canada) Let's Shake, this was the band to see....unfortunatly WAAAYYYY too many people showed up and couldn't get in or were turned away. What do you do when you can't get in to a free show, why you riot!! Destroy a few police cars and join in on the ultraviolence and scare the shit out of the average Torontonian! And the final result, no more bands playing at Ontario Place, a ban that was in effect for several years due to the shit that went down.
And now we go to September 1980 and the band has a major car accident on the way back from a gig. Guitarist Gord Lewis is out of commission and won't be playing guitar for almost a year!! All those plans to go to the US have been put on hold. A fill in guitarist, David Bendith is recruited and the band soldiers on, playing only in Canada and this delays the finishing of the 3rd LP.
8. Teenage Head....Total Love....from the Frantic City LP 1980.
9. Teenage Head....Let's Shake....single version from 1980.
10.Teenage Head....Get Off My Back....live at The Spoke and Rim, Western University 2/18/1981. I recorded this live from CHRW back when it was broadcast live over the airwaves. It was only available on cablecast and only a portion of the city could pick it up. I lived with my parents at this time and was able to tape the entire show. Included are some great Frankie and Nick quotes, both battling for supreme smartassery!! A few of the comments probably should have been censored at the time, but what the fuck!!! It's rock and roll and how else would you ever learn that Elvis Costello was hung like the heater hose on a Mac truck?? And that he had Frankie's eyes popping out of his skull like a fish on the line....important trivia that we all need to know....and what was Frankie hinting about happened between him and Keith Demic...hahahahaha.
11. Teenage Head....Kissin' The Carpet.....as above. And did you know London is the VD capitol Canada? Not only have Teenage Head mentioned it, but also the Brutal Knights! Therefore it must be fact!! Why do you think Keith Demic was singing about 'wear your raincoat in the rain'?
12. Teenage Head...Something Else....as above.
13. Teenage Head....C'mon Everybody.....as above.
14. Teenage Head....Teenage Beer Drinkin' Party....from the Some Kinda Fun LP
Right around this time our good pal Dave Rave phoned in to talk about all things Teenage Head. Dave was in the band at the begininng and joined fulltime around 82/83 and eventually replaced Frankie when he left.
15. Dave Rave....Picture My Face....recorded live on Radio What Wave 8/1/13 when we had Dave on for a full show!!!
There was sooooooo much more Teenage Head that i wanted to play....we'll have to do part 2 one of these days! Big Thanx to Dave Rave for making the time for us here at Radio WW!!! Hope you enjoyed our little chat with Dave and our Teenage Head special!
Next week, we celebrate Ray Condo Day as it's Ray Condo Day in Toronto on May 16th!! We'll be playing only Ray Condo music....some of his punk stuff, Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners and some of his later swing material!! There'll be lots of rare and live stuff from the WW Archves throughtout the show AND, we'll be chatting with Gayle Hurmuses who will be releasing a photo book about Ray Condo on the 16th. It'll be an action packed show you don't want to miss!!!
See ya next week!
And here's a link to the podcast:
Good call , MikeL . I remember seeing that on TV and not knowing who Sparks were except that I'd seen them a couple of times in Circus magazine.
If you're a Plimsouls fan (Always been on the fence with them. Saw them in '81 , and made a mental note to see them again if I had the chance. 25 years later, when I had that chance , for almost 30 bucks , I said , that's OK.....) , you should see "Valley Girl" (You should see it , anyway , it's a dumb fun teen comedy that tries to make a statement .....But a young Nicholas Cage as an LA Punk Rocker is laughable at best. )....Tho ' there's is'nt a cameo , they get decent- sized screen time , as does Josie Cotton , VOTED "BEST DRESSED WOMAN IN ROCK'N'ROLL" in CREEM for refusing to look like a bleached - blonde skank-ing mantis....
GAYE ADVERT - about 10 seconds , "The Punk Rock Movie".
THE SEEDS - "PSYCH OUT "- Same deal as their pals , The LOLLIPOP SHOPPE. THEY ARE'NT IN THE MOVIE LONG ENOUGH (Though long enough ,I guess , to not be called a "Cameo" by most.) , AND SKY SEEMS TO BE DIRECTED NOT TO LIP-SYNCH SO HE WON'T GET A SAG CARD , THO' I USED TO THINK IT WAS THAT HE WAS TOO STONED. Of course , he got to lip - sych "Pushin' Too Hard" and actually say a few lines in his endearing mumble'n'bumble patter on the TV show "The Mothers In Law".
Chocolate Watchband - "The Love - ins". Their MUSIC is all over this picture , but the band is only visible from the back , and once , in a full - screen shot , for mere seconds. When I interviewed Dave Aguilar in the 90's , he told me he hated "Riot On sUNSET sTRIP" so much ,he neve rbothered seeing "The Love - Ins" ( I mailed him a copy.). He later told another interviewer , the reason the CWB is shown so briefly in teh movie is that they were being made an example of , for all the pranks they pulled on the set.
I liked the appearance by Sparks in "Roller Coaster," a 70s thriller about a psycho sabotaging roller coasters.
Chris, Ya woulda been an early MOD ?! GET THE BOOT IN !!!!!! I'm kidding.
John Battles said:'Little Sister" b/w "Marie's The Name (Of His Latest Flame)" , the perfect Rock'n'Roll record , did come out in 1961. The Stones ARE THOUGHT OF AS HAVING FORMED in 1963 , though their original incarnation , as Little Boy Blue and The Blue Boys , with Dick Taylor of The Pretty Things on Bass , were together as early as 1962. The Beatles , I think , formed as The Silver Beatles , with Stu Sutcliffe , in 1960 , but , I may be mistaken.
In The UK , Mods were making their presence known (It's believed Mod went back as far as The Late 50's.) , and Teds , no doubt alienated by The Rock'n'Roll of the day (As were Rockers) distanced themselves from current trends.
Elvis performed just two shows , in Memphis and Honolulu in 1961. THE ONE EXISTING RECORDING , THE LATTER GIG , PROVED AN ALL - AROUND TRIUMPH.HE WOULD'NT PERFORM A LIVE CONCERT (BARRING THE 68 COMEBACK TV SPECIAL) AGAIN , UNTIL 1969.
Sad really, when kids don't know any better than a crappy boy band. At 15, I was into Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix, along with Suede and Morrissey.
I know how you feel. I was hoping to see some younger people at the Bowery Ballroom, but the crowd had the same age range at what you would see at a gig by any veteran garage band. Oh well, I guess what they play is so far removed from what the kids are used to, i.e. Taylor Swift, One Direction, etc., that it just totally goes over their heads.
Just got back from a quick trip to Cleveland to see the Connection at Brothers Lounge. They're a good, solid garage band who alternate between sounding Beatle-esque and Stonesy, and they play kickass covers of "SLUG" by the Ramones and "Teenage News" by Syl Sylvain. I would highly recommend checking them out live, and if you like them enough, then you should buy a copy of their "Let It Rock" LP.
Nice one!! I also like the The Fall-esque ranting.
GEEZ , IF i COULD GET A 60's night (Not Northern Soul) going in this one horse town , I'd be laughing from here to next Sunday. I like the premise , though , it's right on the money. ONLY $300 FOR A SOUL 45 NONE OF US OWN? MUST NOT be Northern Soul. Lame imitations of The Supremes and Four Tops go for at least $500.

MANU , I could'nt tell you....It's the same Drummer I saw them with , though.... THEY SOUND BETTER , ON THIS VIDEO , than they did in Chicago , though not by much. ON THE ONE HAND , I had an all right time , BECAUSE i DID'NT EXPECT ANYTHING. i DID EXPECT THEM TO BE A LOT TIGHTER AFTER TOURING SO MUCH , BUT , I was'nt really sure WHAT to expect....
My friend in Detroit said the same thing - Band was sloppy , fans thought it was going to be THEE Flamin' Groovies of "Flamingo" and "Teenage Head" renown , not the "Shake Some Action " Groovies of possibly MORE renown. A few beers in , and ,when some of these whiners did'nt get their way, they syarted hurling dbris and duking it out amongst themselves.
(Spoiler alert : It's common knowledge Roy and Cyril , amicably , parted company two or three years ago, and did'nt call themselves The Flamin' Groovies , then , anyway . The original band NEARLY reformed about ten years ago , but , opted not to , after one rehearsal .).
My friend said these people were mad because the band was'nt doing classics like "Second Cousin" or "Heading For The Texas Border" or "Roadhouse" , because the LONEY - LESS GROOVIES NEVER DID THAT STUFF (Not to my knowledge , anyway.), barring , of course , "Teenage Head".
I'M SURE SOME OF THESE GUYS WHO NEED AT LEAST Three 40oz.'ers to get a buzz on are far more computer - literate than I am , and could have checked out the many recent video clips on You Tube , , or Googled the band's name , and they would have learned it's Cyril , Chris , George , AND , I guess , Victor , touring now.
I ALSO HEARD THEIR CHOICE TO DO "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Paint It Black" , back to back , was not well - recieved in Detroit (The only covers they did , here , were 'Tallahessee Lassie" and an NRBQ song.), but , the Sire Records Flamin' Groovies opted for the same covers back when , and some even MORE obvious and done to death (I do like the early 70's version of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" they did.).
So , some people were disappointed to the point of violence. Well , they don't know disappointment , and they have'nt seen a MAJOR train wreck. They 're too young to have seen Johnny Thunders.
Still , I think the band needs to try harder , and it might behoove them to throw the non - Power Popsters a bone and learn a couple of of those earlier songs . Just sayin'.
YEAH , it has been fun. Sometimes , I meet someone I really admire , ostensibly to do an interview , and they just want to hang out and talk , instead. Sometimes , that's better.
Nah man, I think that's awesome. You decided you wanted to do something and went out and did it. Sounds like you've had a lot of fun doing it, too. I respect that. I wouldn't mind hearing more of your stories some time.
arigato , Boy No Kitaro !
Hey John. Here's it. ;)
