    • Manu , The Groovies are great.....I tried not to be biased , as I saw Roy and Cyril twice , with The A-Bones , and both shows kicked "Le Derriere"  (   I   ) , and I knew the obvious : This is a totally different band . Some people expected them to sound like "Flamingo" /"Teenage Head" era Groovies. Of course, I expected them to sound like Sire Records Groovies.....They did sound harder than I expected , but , unfortunately , they got off to a good start , then it kind of fell apart.  I hope the Paris show is better. Chris Wilson used to live in Paris , or , maybe he still does?

    • I will see them in Paris on June 12th and will report it...if I don't forget. John, I'm worried after reading your gig's report (thx for it btw!) but you never know how a show will be and... that's the beauty of it after all! Anyway, the FG are a great band, let's party on!

    • I JUST GOT BACK FROM SEEING THEM IN CHICAGO (excuse the caps. It's very late.)

It hurts me to my heart to say it was'nt very good. I mean, there were moments , some songs really stood out , and at least , they went easy on the Beatlesque stuff , even though I was surprised and a bit disapppointed that they did'nt do "You Tore Me Down" .... as a friend said , they appeared under - rehearsed , and did'nt really gel.    Chris Wilson was trying , but , he was really drunk , and certain assholes in the audience made him angry , but , he managed to tell them what as what without being a tool.

There was a VERY bad vibe in the audience , all these entitled drunks who got in for free ( For the record , I bought a discount Groupon ticket , but , nearly everyone else got the memo that Reckless Records had free passes , when the barely - advertised show failed to sell too many tix at $35 a pop , originally.). First , some brainiac threw a tall boy can (Which must've cost $10.) at the stage. Wilson handled it well , telling whoever it was that it was a cowardly move to throw something at a man who's not in a position to defend himself (The main floor is'nt exactly accesible from the stage , even if Chric were 25 years old and in a mood to fight.).........And , oh , yes , fighting . A couple of fights broke out. Who picks a fight at a Flamin' Groovies show? Entitled motherfuckers who got in for free.

The band , at least , saw the humor in the stage diver , but , that , too , is so disrespectful.

MAYBE THIS WAS JUST AN EXCEPTIONALLY BAD NIGHT , though it did'nt have to be. There were often long breaks between songs , and some confusion about which songs they were going to play.....OR , AT LEAST , IN WHAT ORDER. Wilson almost walked off the stage at one point , and seemed pretty certain the others would follow suit. I would'nt have blamed him . Who throws a beer can at The Flamin' Groovies , even if they are having a bad night?

IT WAS REALLY A BAD TRIP , comparable to when The Cramps played there in 2002 , and Lux threw part of a mike stand in the air , inadvertently hitting Ivy on the head.    Then , their Roadie , Jason (Bomboras , Fuzztones, Lords of Altamont) was delegated to try to keep the jock - punks off the stage with no help from Security. He got the ever lovin' shit beat out of him by at least 20 people, I wish I were lying.

I TRIED TO HAVE A GOOD TIME IN SPITE OF IT ALL......As Melissa said , there is a very bad mojo about that place. I said , it did'nt help that they poured dirt from Robert Johnson's grave into the foundation , when they first built it. IT'S rare that I'd go there , now . Maybe the first five years ,all the greats played there , most of whom are now dead or retired. I can handle it in small doses , but , this dose was cut with strychnine.                         John.

    • Plenty. About 10 , 20 years ago , I HAD a "Bucket list" , but I did get to meet most of those people , like Lux Interior and Dickie Peterson , before their sad demise. I shook hands with Little Richard , Link Wray , and one Rolling Stone (Bill Wyman) , but never had a real conversation with either.

Did'nt meet Muddy Waters , Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee Lewis (Maybe I'm better off not meeting the latter two). I met Dee Dee and Marky , but none of the other Ramones, Did'nt meet Johnny Thunders (Again , I may be better off.). tHERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE i HAVE'NT MET , but would have liked to. THE KEY IS , GET THEIR TRUST AND DON'T CROWD THEM. Don't do a Chris Farley , and you might even become friends. But , I'M TRULY FORTUNATE IN THaT I'VE BEEN IN THe RIGHT PALCE AT TEH RIGHT TIME. Most of these people have been very cool.

I like to tell these stories , because I THINK , AND i HOPE , PEOPLE WILL FIND THEM ENTERTAINING.

I'm not out to "one up ' anyone or be a braggart. Honest. But , did I tell you about the time......

    • Lol, damn dude, is there anyone you haven't met?

    • May 8, 2014 1:53 AM CDT
    • GG could be VERY outgoing . He genuinely liked to meet people , especially if they shared his passion for Rock'n'Roll......GG's TASTES WERE A LOT MORE VARIED THAN MIGHT BE EXPECTED.

I'm not defending certain things he did , but , everyone that knew him , back then , agrees that he was just an enthusiatic rock and roller. He spoke of just doing a straight Rock show when he got out of Prison. Would people have NOT gone to his shows if there were suddenly no bodily fluids or violence , mostly self - inflicted , involved?

I asked him how he got Wayne Kramer and Dennis Thompson to play with him. He said "You're the first person who ever asked me that !".He said , basically , Wayne was just jamming in clubs (Gang War had just split up and he was minus a band.) , and agreed to play. Then , he found a classified ad saying Dennis Thompson was looking for a band. Neither one had seen the other for years , so they were VERY happy about this surprise GG laid out for them  . HE DONE A MITZVAH !

GG claimed he almost got Thunders to play , as Gang War was'nt yet in rigor mortis , and Johnny seemed possibly opento playing with Wayne again. Who knows?

    • Yeah, Bite it You Scum is a good song. I agree he was an interesting guy, but more for his personality than his music in my opinion.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the Dwarves. I think they took the best of what GG had to offer, had some good tunes, and don't take themselves so seriously.

    • I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THAT RECORD , MANU ! It must be a bootleg , if not an extremely limited pressing. IF IT SAYS "mADE IN iTALY" , IT'S A BOOTLEG , MOST LIKELY. A lot of boots were shipped to countries where they were not as east to detect , Italy being one of them. Wow , I'd love to hear that , though...... I passed on seeing The Saints in 1987 , because their then - current album sounded like REM !   Bailey finally got back on the right track with a new Saints lineup that put out two more Punkesque albums abouT 8 or 10 years ago.

    • May 10, 2014 10:03 AM CDT
    • This one is a no-brainer: The Saints Live at Hope and Anchor London 77. Chris Bailey at his best as well as the band. Obviously a wild audience. Main songs of the 1st and 2nd album are played but quite faster than in studio. Really a great Live album. I do not know if it is a bootleg or an official one though.

    • I think it was budget rock 2007 that they played.  My memory's kinda hazy on the year, but it was definitely worth it.

    • Seriously considering going to boston for the record release. Not many earlier groups (that I never got to see) do I really care about witnessing live at this point, but Real Kids is defintely one of them. Ordered their first album from Sam the Record Man in Sydney Cape Breton when I was 16. It cost me 40$...that was my entire months allowance at the time. ah well. A life changing band though nonetheless

    • I'M TOLD IT'S ALREADY COMPLETED.......Now , it's just wait , wait , and wait some more.

I saw them twice , late 90's - early oughts , maybe. The original band cancelled a booking here in Chicago , but John and Howie played with a different lineup . I think Billy Cole played both shows.

I was bummed that it was'nt the classic lineup , but, they DESTROYED. They came back , later , using a local , pick -up drummer who'd practiced WITH THEM once , AND THEY STILL KILLED IT !!!

VERY COOL GUYS , STILL COMMITTED TO HIGH - ENERGY ROCK'N'ROLL.

    • Not sure you'd dig this, but i've listening to the Sleaford Mods a lot recently. Some crazy brit ranting over Stranglers style basslines and a drum machine. Cool stuff.

    • May 9, 2014 7:10 AM CDT
    • Nope, I didn't know them. Thanks!! Some good stuff here, I like The Gits particularly.

    • Mmm, you may be able to know some of these bands, but have you heard these tunses?

    • May 8, 2014 2:08 AM CDT
    • BTW - GG ALLIN "GIMME SOME HEAD". Definitely Bubblegum.  Any song that says Gimme twice or more is up for Bubblegum status , likE "Gimme Gimme Gimme Some" by The Skunks and SOns of HERCULES.

GUM ! GUM ! GUM ! (Anyone remember that Wrigley's Spearmint Gum ad?.)

    • May 8, 2014 1:37 AM CDT
    • i JUST PICKED UP THE DIRTBOMBS' BUBBLEGUM ALBUM , AS WELL AS THE LAST STOOGES ' ALBUM. WHAT CAN I SAY ? I'M SLOW.

But , Bubblegum revival is in order , tho' Lava Sutra (Whose great CD should still be readily available from Whitehouse Records, cheap.) flirted with it. Better than that , they got her digits !          oF Of course , The Ramones were chewin' out a rhythm on their bubblegum. I first liked them because they reminded me of The Ohio Express and Tommy James and The Shondells.

The Cichlids were also a funny and good rockin' band , seeped in the GUM.

Some say Glamwas a return to bubblegum . Sweet started out with early Bubblegum hits , "Funny Funny", "Papa Joe'' (Calypso Bubblegum), the great non - starter "Lollipop Man", and , later , "Little Willy " and  "Wig Wam Bam"....... Gary Glitter and Mud stuck to formula , but it worked.

IN A WAY , IT was British Bubblegum , but you could say that already happened with The Troggs' "Hip Hip Hooray" and THE eQUALS'
      lAUREL AND hARDY".....
