That's the best reason to watch those Beach Movies....But , Boris Karloff , for one , had a CAMEO ( Bikini Beach , I think....). Buster Keaton , I think , hada cameo in another, even tho' they were both in "Ghost In The Invisible Bikini" , as I recall...But , a lot of those bands got to pretty much do one or two songs in their entirety. Too bad , Dick Dale seemed exclusively contracted to do lame vocal numbers. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A CHEAP vhs COPY OF TAPEHEADS IF i'D KNOWN ALL THOSE PEOPLEHAD CAMEOS...... I had NO IDEA  Stiv was in it....I only ever knew him to "ACT"IN  "POLYESTER " , in which he was great....I JUST FOUND A COPY OF "aMAZON Women on The Moon" ,I had no idea all thee people were in it.....

 

Antenna was showing "It's a Bikini World " with Sid Haig , the Animals , Pat and Lolly Vegas (I think?) , and The Castaways , and I'd just got  a new - old VCR , and was only able to hook it up properly to tape part of it. I'm pretty sure I still have a copy....somewhere.

 

Oh , yeah...."Beyond" is an all - time classic. Wink and you'll miss Pam Grier. I THINK"i'M cOMING hOME " was the best thing the Strawberry Alarm Clock ever did....But that whole soundtrack was genius.   Some of Russ Meyer's stars came out of Grade - Z Beach movies , too. Michael Blodgett and Lori Williams both appear in "A Swingin' Summer" with Raquel Welch , Gary lEWIS AND tHE pLAYBOYS

YBOYS (actually frat - rockin' , pre - fame.), A STILL - ROCKIN' rIGHTEOUS bROS , AND , i THINK, tHE RIP CHORDS. SHOT ON A LAKE IN Jersey or Connecticuit or somewhere , gotta love it.

 

But , the Beach Party Movies were like the Happy Hunting Ground for aging legends - kEATON , kARLOFF , Rathbone , Vincent Price , who eally was'nt very old , mid - 50's or something......

I was flipping channels over the summer & a local station was running all those Frankie & Annette Beach movies ... Wow! it was cameo central.  Dick Dale, Stevie Wonder, The Castaways and tons more.  Tapeheads (w/ John Cusak & Tim robbins) is filled w/ cameos ... Jello as an FBI agent, Mike Nesmith, Stiv Bators and more.  Highway 61 is another oddball cameo flick ... Jello & Tav Falco are a few I remember.

Lunch Wagon features Missing Persons.  And I figure you've seen Beyond The valley of the Dolls ... Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Well ,I waited , I dunno , twentysomething years to see "Angels From Hell", standard Biker fare , no real surprises (Except that it's MGM , not AIP). It was just recently re - released to DVD ( I don't think it was EVER released , commercially , on video.). The reason it's of interest to any Garage Rock fan worth their salt is that THE LOLLIPOP SHOPPE have two songs !!!! BUT....Fred Cole once explained to me that he was not allowed to be shown singing his own songs , because if he were shown lip - synching his own words , as is usually the case , MGM would have had to have coughed up a SAG (Screen Actors' Guild) card , which would make him (Gasp !) an Actor. Anyway , as I understood it , The Lollipop Shoppe ARE in this movie , and Fred is visible , only when he is'nt singing.......Well , you can hear one song , briefly , and see other members of the band , for about 5-10 seconds. I think Fred and band got a little more screen time on "Mr. Madison Avenue" , an outstanding slow/fast punker , but it does'nt appear on this new DVD.

 

COLE GOT SCREWED IN THE MOVIE , "HYPE !", TOO , BUT DEAD MOON MADE THE MOST OF THE ONE MINUTE OR SO (OR LESS?) THEY APPEAR IN THE FILM.

I was a little surprised by the 14 year figure too, I was thinking more around 8 or 9. That article makes it sound like the break could be long, but then this showed up on their website:

 

 

Seems odd they would even bother to make an announcement for just a few months break.

Whoa! 14 years! That's a good innings! They are/were a great band - my wife & I saw them about 3 or 4 years ago on their first visit here to Adelaide - small, tightly-packed soldout gig - they were just AWESOME!!! - That show ranks as one of my all-time favourite gigs, and I've seen plenty over the years, all around the world! [and I'm guessing that due to that initial response, that's why they've happily been back here several times since! Lots of overseas bands don't get to come here coz all the promotors are East-Coast-centric!... but when they do, as with Thee Oh Sees, the response is usually great!]

Still... we have fond memories of live shows and a large stack of brilliant recordings to remember them by, cos they were nothing if not prolific! They were always friendly to people after their shows and 3D Radio broadcast some very cool iinterviews each time they visited.

It will be interesting to see where the various members go on from here and what new sounds we get to hear!

Frontman John Dwyer broke the news during last night’s show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall, telling the crowd, 'This will be the last Oh Sees show for a long while. So dig in.'

"In an interview with SF Weekly, the band’s tour manager Annie Southworth confirmed the news, noting that Dwyer was looking to take some time off as he made the move from San Francisco to Los Angeles. She added, “They need a break after 5 years straight, so yes … hiatus time. Will be a little hard to continue with all the different locales so who know what is going to happen… Cross fingers, we all are (sure) that it’s not completely over.”

I think i waited so long to buy any Pebbles LPs because I only knew some of the bands and songs , while , when I changed colleges , we had a record store , a REAL one , in town , and I found "Nuggets , The Hits' " , I said , holy shit ! I know these songs. I NEED these songs. What does that have to do with Christmas ? Nothing , just thought you'd like to get your mind off of it , momentarily.

Actually got that album for Christmas when I was just gettin into garage... them were the days...

EHHHHHH, WHO WAS THE BAND THAT DID THE MEDLEY OF "GLORIA" AND "GLORIA IN EXCELCISIS DEO" (THE POLKAHOLICS LATER DID THE SAME THING AS "GLORIA IN EXCELSIS POLKA")....I don't have any of 'em , but the series that track came from , Midnight Records' Christmas , had some good 'uns. Actually my favorite was rejected. My friend's band , DIMENTIA 13 , did a great , short , send up of "Inna Gadda Da Vida " as "In The Time of The Season", with a Farfisa ,supposedly played once by Sly Stone , and their (Female !) Bass player doing a letter - perfect impersonation of Doug Ingle.

Joe , Yeah  , I like it , too. Slade put out an album in the 80's called "Crackers". It's made up mostly of party songs . It was reisseued , years later , but , I doubt there's a version of it available , today. It's a great album.

Oh, forgot all about the Ramones tune. 

 

Speaking of Slade and holiday songs, I've always liked their rendition of "Auld Lang Syne"/"You'll Never Walk Alone". 

......oh , yeah , I did a show wih 68 Comeback , once. tHE bASSHOLES WERE SUPPOSED TO PLAY , TOO, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE A GIBSON  BROS. REUNION, ALMOST...... BUT , DON HOWLAND HAD A PENCHANT FOR MISSING HIS OWN GIGS , VERY "GEORGE JONES". He called Jeff and said he'd be there , but , he did'nt show , so, I had to hold much of the shoe, myself, playing an hour or more.....The audience was really good, though.

That was me , in the 90's. Five new records a week , and even my little shIt job paid all right. I found myself trading in a lot of my Estrus stuff , except THE BROOD  AND THE WOGGLES, BUT , i'D BEEN INTO GARAGE ROCK FOR 10 + YEARS , BY THAT TIME. NOT KNOCKING IT, IF IT STILL DOES IT FOR OTHER PEOPLE. BY THE TIME THE NOMADS STARTED TOURING TEH STATES , I'D BEEN LISTENING TO THEM FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. I SAW THEM 3 TIMES , THEY WERE GREAT TWICE , AND AWFUL , ONCE. THE WASTE KINGS , BRIEFLY ON ESTRUS ,OPENED FOR THE NOMADS, AND THEY KILLED IT !

THEY COULD'NT GET ARRESTED IN CHICAGO , BECAUSE THEY DID'NT INTENTIONALLY SUCK.

Man, what was the record that got me hot for garage rock?  Hmm...coming up in the Norfolk underground exposed me to the legendary M-80s in the late 1980s.  They hipped me to the Stooges first two LPs.  I think it was those two albums that really whet my appetite for this music.  Then I "discovered" Estrus Records!  The Makers, the Mono Men, the Mummies, the Mortals, Sugar Shack, Man or Astro Man, the Drags, early Southern Culture on the Skids...Then I found out about Crypt Records and the Gories!  The Gories really hit me.  It was simple, primitive and rockin' like a roadside jukejoint on the bad side of town.  Of course I can't forget the Oblivians and the Bassholes.  I really like that visceral lo-fi blues/R&B base trashy rock and roll.

WELL , I THOUGHT SO , TOO , BUT , TARQUIN WALKED IN ON MALCOLM AND THE LADY FROM HIS FEMINIST CLUB HAVING TANTRIC SEX , AND , HE'S BEEN IN INTENSE THERAPY ,EVER  SINCE.
