This kind of question requires major thought as I am stumped - there are a zillion great psych/garage 45's worth a mention. My memory is a bit hazy but the Viceroys Five Steps To Hell 45 (I think released in 1967) is on Psychedelic Crown Jewels? If it is....that is one hell of a song - Stunning,they simply don't make music like that anymore. I believe that group released a handful of 45's and the above mentioned song was the group's last hurrah. Most of these singles you speak of are old and difficult to track down (I've heard them all though and they are great) but here are similar discs (there are alot of moody psych 45's - an endless amount)...maybe you know them already but what the hell, just brainstorming over here:

The JuJus - Sometime Or Other - 1967 (unreleased 3rd single at the time)
The Painted Ship - Frustration - 1967
The Dirty Filthy Mud - Forest of Black - 1968
The Nightshadows - So Much (the psychedelic version from 1967 which is on the Square Root of 2 lp)
Mock Duck - Do Re Mi - 1968
The Purple Canteen - Brains In My Feet - 1968
Les Sinners - Don't You Run Away - From the Vox Populi album which comes in both english and french - 1968
Unrelated Segments - all three 45's.
Instant Orange - Plight of Mary Celeste - 1975 - group started out in 1968 releasing 45's, this sounds like it's from 1968 though, amazing track from an ep the band released.
The Mind's Eye - Help, I'm Lost - 1967
The Quests - I'm Tempted - this 1966 Fenton 45 isn't really psych but it's great with plenty of fuzz.
The Plagues - I've Been Through It Before - 1966 (Fenton 45)
Peabody Company - Tobacco Road - Amazing psych version of this well traveled song from Fist Full of Fuzz. Anything this band recorded is supposedly good thought they never released a 45 but have an album's worth of great material being prepared for release soon.

The Index - The Index - 1968 lp
The Savages - Live n Wild - 1966 lp
All Of Thus - All Of Thus lp - a local NY band lp that has a moody Zombies/Byrds feel.

Repo Records, every once in a while they have some cool stuff usually just trendy music for all the hipsters.

Speed City Records....loads of cheapie records, and lots of punk/indy/noise type stuff. Most of the records i get locally come from here...I almost always leave the store with way less cash and more records.
Grooves Records....more mainstream type records as well as new indy stuff....there's always treasures to be found.
Village Idiot Records....more collectable type stuff...higher prices but generallye excellent condition records.

Shake-It Records here is Cincinnati, OH is fantastic: http://www.shakeitrecords.com/ An entire floor of new and used vinyl of all genres. People who work there know their stuff and aren't stuck up hipster assholes, either. Love that place.

Luna Records is across the street from my house, but the employees are total hipster trash. One dude really wouldn't talk to me until I bought a Velvet Underground album.
Vibes music is a few blocks away, on 54th. Their selection is okay, and the guys who run it are always super cool.
Indy CD and Vinyl is on 62nd/Broadripple. They probably have the best selection in the city. Staff is knowledgeable, but occasionally a bit snotty. Owner is a nice guy, though.
There's also "the record shop" on 62nd and. . . Guilford? It's by the violin shop. I've been in there once, and they were a bit too collect-y for my style. I like records I can listen to.

From Houston Examiner: Memphis music icon Jim Dickinson, the producer behind The Replacements’ Pleased To Meet Me and Big Star’s Third/Sister Lovers, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 15. The 67 year old musician was recovering from triple bypass surgery. Dickinson was a sought after session musician who played piano on numerous albums including The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, Aretha Franklin’s Spirit In The Dark, and Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind. His production work on the Big Star album Third/Sister Lovers, recorded in 1974, but not released until 1978, made him an in-demand producer for many of the new bands who would soon top the college alternative charts in the 80’s.
