    • The Nervebreakers' "We Want Everything" , tho' it was released about 15 years after it was recorded.

F.U.2 (First LP) - The second greatest hoax in Punk Rock History. Members of The Downliners Sect and mates pose as a Punk band , and make a better show of it than most of the competition.

Los Punk Rockers (Only LP) - Thee greatest hoax in Punk Rock History.  A cheapie label in Spain hits on the big , bright idea to do a Punk exploitation record , covering the whole of "Never Mind The Bollocks".    A thoroughly inept studio band grapples with the English language ( I can relate . I'd be hopeless trying to sing in Castillian Spanish , too .) and with their instruments. They lose on both counts . In other words , Punk as fuck.  You may never listen to The Pistols the same way , again.

"Are We Too Late For The Trend" - Does'nt look like this remarkably consistent Dallas /Ft. Worth comp from '79 will even see reissue , which is a damned shame. I hope I'm wrong. The Nervebreakers , Telefones / E=MC2 , Superman's Girlfriend , Vomit Pigs , Control , Plastic Idols , Smegma , Barry Kooda , even Blindate , who look like they should be playing at a fern bar , or opening for the likes of Savvy , Shotgun or The U.S. Kids , all deliver the goods.

    • Hi , Mina . I'm not sure if I follow you , but "Punkabilly" has been used as a catch - all phrase to describe early bands that had their roots in Rockabilly and Punk , like , obviously , The Cramps , X , Alan Vega , even The Nips. Then , the whole Psychobilly thing happened , and changed the playing field.

It's still "Correct" to say something is "Punkabilly" if it fits that description.   Voodoo Rhythm , that was Axel Gieseking's label , right?

    • November 11, 2013 2:06 AM CST
    • Of course Voodoo Rhythm raised and ediucated me, so I should be grantfull thankfull whatever.

    • Dave ,you should be thinking up some funny Rob Ford jokes , yourself. It's your civic duty !

"I love to gooooo a-wandering along the mountain track. And , as I go , I love to smoke a 10 oz. rock of CRACK !!!

Valdereeeeee , velderaaaaah , my 10 oz. rock of crack."

"Toronto calling - I'm hoping to score. Just gorging on food and booze got to be a bore .

Toronto calling - I'm above the law. I drank into a stupor , and smoked all I saw.

Toronto calling - IT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE , i FOUND SOMETHING BETTER THAN FREEBASING COKE.

Toronto calling - SEE , I REALLY DON'T CARE. IF I BRUSHED MY TEETH WITH HEROIN , I'D STILL BE THE MAYOR !".

See , it's so easy , and , I'm not even Canadian.  They've impeached Presidents for less than this , but , wait !

I know how to make Ford step down. Have Nardwuar interview him ! Then , write Steve Leckie in for the duration of the term.

    • i USED TO DRAW CARTOON OF PUNK BANDS WHEN I WAS A KID (I MEAN , WHEN FIRST AND SECOND WAVE PUNK WERE STILL HAPPENING.) . I WAS INFLUENCED BY NATIONAL LAMPOON'S GREAT PUNK PARODY , AND MY OWN IGNORANCE.   I DID A RECORD CLUB CARTOON WITH ALL THESE PUNK RECORDS YOU COULD ORDER , LIKE "SATURDAY NIGHT RUPTURE , VARIOUS ARTISTS" , "CHUCK BERRY GOES PUNK !'', "DEVO VS. THE TALKING HEADS" ("COVER " DEPICTING A "BATMAN" STYLE CARTOON FISTFIGHT, AND , OF COURSE , BANDS LIKE MALARIA AND GREEN CHINESE VOMIT.

THEN THERE WAS - GRAND PUNK RAILROAD . MY FRIEND AND I MADE A STOP - MOTION FILM OF THIS BAND DUKING IT OUT , ONSTAGE , WITH THE HIPPIE BAND , CAPTAIN ACID. THIS WAS ALL DONE WITH HIS 60'S - ERA GI JOES.

    • Another retracton.....I don't think approximation is a real word. It just seened to fit. I remember the "Car 54" movie getting a few billboards at the train station platforms in Chicago , and playing the last remaining Dollar theatres , but , again , probably just for a weekend. Johansen does a credible re - invention of the Gunther Toody character , only saying "OO OO" ONCE ,AND ,WELL , You'd just have to see it..........

    • November 9, 2013 12:02 AM CST
    • if my retraction does'nt show up , here , it's definnitely a movie set , and not CBGB in this scene. You can see David Johansen body - surfing.

    • November 8, 2013 3:31 PM CST
    • BTW , Tyler , do you know what the second and last - ever movie (Barring documentaries) The Ramones EVER appeared in was ?

"Car 54 , Where Are You?". I refused to see the movie when it came out , because I love the TV show too much. Besides , it came and went in a day or two , or so it it seems. But , when it came on TV , I watched it out of morbid curiosity. Fortunately , I taped it. Any movie with David Johansen , Fran Drescher and original cast members , Al Lewis and Nipsey Russell , can't be ALL bad. Imagine my surprise , seeing The Ramones , playing at what appeared to be the real CBGBs (A good 15 years after the bands' last real gig, there.). I guess that's still a pretty well - kept secret , tho' I remember Joey and Marky talking about promoting it in Times Square , I don't remember them mentioning they were IN it.

    • November 7, 2013 3:31 PM CST
    • That's actually pretty funny , tho' horribly wrong , about "I Don't Wanna Be Learned ,I Don't Wanna Be Tamed" being written into the script as being ONE song.  The idea that Kristal would have even said The Ramones were going places in 1974 , when , he no doubt had a LOT of reservations , the most famous quote about their first gig being his , "No one's gonna like you guys , but , I'll have you back.".

    • I love The Make Up, especially their live albums.

btw , HONEST , I did delete the two extra messages. Sorry.

Billy said , in Ugly Things , The Velvets ' influence on Cold Sun was not as strong as that of The Elevators , but, it was there.

Chris Stigliano wrote a good article about the influence of The Velvets on artists you would'nt have imagined , The Cars , e.g. , if only by virtue of being from Boston , where The Velvets were still gigging before and after they were regarded as nobodies , and people like Jonathan Richman drew from that.(PS , I was just told , recently ,  That John Felice was "Hippie Johnny" . Don't know if that's so , or why , perhaps because of head butting within the original Modern Lovers , and that was Jonathan's revenge ?).

But , I've always read Boston was the first city to really embrace VU. Tho' everytime they played Chicago , on some mismatched bill , about 100 people with shades and all - black gear would rush the stage when they came on , then leave before the next band. Of course , they played in Texas , and Roky became a big fan , tho' it's unclear whether he actually saw the band or not. He was probably at Rusk by the time they first played Houston or Austin (Didthey play Austin?) .

The earliest Velvets ' cover I could think of was The Yardbirds' "I'm Waiting For The Man" , which they may have only performed once (?) in LA in '68 . Stigliano told me there was a band from Holland who released a Pop version of Run , Run , Run and , maybe "There She Goes Again" (?) shortly after the first Velvets ' LP was released.  Of course , going back to Bosstown , Willie "Loco " Alexander played in a much later version of The Velvets , minus Lou. The funniest story involving Lou Reed did'nt really involve him at all. You probably read about how David Bowie talked for 20 minutes , backstage , with Lou , only to learn it was really Doug Yule , as Reed had quit the band , telling Yule "You take it. Take all of it. ". Apparently , a lot of people thought Doug WAS Lou at the time ! HA HA HA HA HA.

I heard that version of "Run, Run, Run" on Intoxica Radio, which was quite a fun cover version, but I thought it was by a German band.

    • Billy's nuts, I love him. He is doing some new stuff with Cold Sun. And I know he's done some stuff with P. St. John (some of which is on that Soundcloud page) but I'm not sure how recent that is. Hopefully he'll come to town next month when Turner debuts his Satan's bride video

I DID'NT REALLY KNOW WHAT HE LOOKED LIKE , NOW , BUT HE STILL LOOKS LIKE HE BELONGS TO ROKY'S TRIBE OF ALIENS.

      1. Almighty Rhombus....She Didn't Want Me....from a demo they sent us sometime ago. They are playing at The APK in London Ontario tonite.

      2. Forgotten Rebels....I Think Of Her...recorded live at the Cedar Lounge, 1980 and from the OPM CD. Forgotten Rebels play saturday night at Call The Office.

      234

The Forgotten Rebels, summer 1981. Chris Houston on far RHS

      3. Forgotten Rebels...Hello Hello...from This Ain't Hollywood LP on Star Records.

      4. Forgotten Rebels...You're A Rebel...from In Love With The System LP on Star Records.

      5. Chris Houston....Einsteins Brain's In Hamilton...from a 7" on Schizophrenic Records. Chris was in The Forgotten Rebels in the late 70's/early 80's. He's matured a little bit since.

      6. Arson...Social Eyes...from the Not Always About You CD. :Late 70's Toronto combo (they played The Cedar Lounge here in London Sept 78 and they were the first out of London punk band i ever saw) who have reformed to play and have fun. Current drummer is David Quinton Steinberg, lawyer to the musical stars.

      7. Cowlicks...I Wanna Be Your Man....from a CFMU (Hamilton's college radio station) download of all local combos! Obviously Hamilton has some cool combos that i wasn't aware of. And they have some really cool combos i am aware of; The Noble Savages, The Evil Eyes, The Squids and many more who aren't represented on this download.

      8. Monarch Project...A Better Part Of You...from the above CFMU download.

      9. Young Rival...Black Is Good...from the above CFMU download. Caught this trio live a few times and they put on a pretty good show. Formerly known as Ride Theory where they did the full on garagerock thing. Now they have a poppy Kinks inspired edge to their sound.

      10. The Mogs...Smile....mid 90's demo. They are reincarnated and will be playing at Doors Pub in Hamilton tonite.

      11. The Mogs...Vancouver...as above.

      12. Trade Secrets...Of A Feather...Montreal combo who are playing with The Mogs tonite.

      13. The Reply...The Reply...from their Downtown Soul EP and they are headlining the Mogs show tonite in Hamilton.

      235

      The Reply, Brennan's Nov 5 2011

      14. The Seeds...You Can't Be Trusted...from the re-issue of their first LP.

      15. The Higher State...Why Don't You Prove It...from their latest CD, which for some reason is self titled, and it's at least their 5th CD/LP. On 13 O'Clock Records from Texas, yet the band is UK based.

      16. Mere Humans...I Confess....brand new demo from this Ottawa combo, with 2 former members of The Evil Farm Children.

      17. Los Chicos Problema....Secuestrado En Otro Planeta...from their debut CD, Estremecete y Rueda!  2 piece garage combo from Mexico...

      18. Dustbin Flowers...Start Out With Nothing....local combo with a 3 song demo. They play out live fairly often, yet i still haven't managed to catch them.

      19. Bitchlove...Picket Fences...from the soon to be released EP, Stigma. More local noise!

      20. The Flamin' Groovies...Slow Death....from the Slow Death LP on Norton....1971 demo. All of The Flamin' Groovies tunes being played on this show, were done live last night at Lee's Palace by The Flamin' Groovies. First time in Toronto in 31 years!!!

      21. The Flamin' Groovies...Paint It Black...from a radio only 12" EP.

      22. The Flamin' Groovies...Shake Some Action....as above.

      23. The Flamin' Groovies...Teenage Head...from the LP of the same name.

      24. The Flamin' Groovies...I Can't Hide...from the Shake Some Action LP and faded out as we ran out of time, but certainly not songs, memories and thoughts about The Flamin' Groovies.

Thanx for all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!! Much appreciated!! Back again next week with more stuff! Still on a high from seeing The Flamin' Groovies on Wednesday eve!! Brought my youngest daughter and got her picture taken w/Cyril!!!  Proud Dad!!!!
