Comprised of singer and guitarist Peter Aaron, guitarist William G. Weber, drummer Bob Bert, and bassist Jerry Teel, the Chrome Cranks are among the leading architects of the musical genre known as punk blues. Aaron and Weber (a sometime G.G. Allin sideman) started the band in their hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, during the late 1980s, and the group became a true force to be feared when the pair moved to New York in 1992 and acquired ex-Honeymoon Killers leader Teel and, eventually, ex-Sonic Youth/Pussy Galore member Bert. Dark, volatile, and overwhelmingly raw, the Cranks’ corrosive sound draws on the band members’ singular Midwest garage-meets-Lower East Side-alley breeding to create a jagged, black pastiche that remains unrivaled. Known for their unhinged, decibel-destroying live performances and their fiery studio recordings, the quartet been cited as an influence by the White Stripes, the Mooney Suzuki, and other leading neo-garage acts.
During the 1990s the Chrome Cranks released three critically acclaimed studio albums (The Chrome Cranks, Dead Cool, and Love in Exile), as well as albums of early material (Oily Cranks) and live performances (Live in Exile), and several singles and EPs. The Cranks were a revered presence on the ’90s New York scene and toured heavily in the US and Europe, achieving great success in the latter, where they remain legends today. The group was even featured on MTV in North America and Europe, but broke up in 1997 after years of hard touring. In 2009, however, following the release of two anthology albums (Diabolical Boogie and The Murder of Time), the Chrome Cranks reunited for shows in the US and Europe. Just released on Thick Syrup Records (CD) and Bang! Records (LP), the visceral and utterly explosive Ain’t No Lies in Blood is the group’s first album of new material since 1997.
