Radio What Wave Playlist June 7/2021
This is an all London Ontario show, as it’s Music Week here in London Ontario. Just a sample of some of the great artists that come from here.
- Jim Ashby….Speed City….from a 7” that originally came out in 1970, and was re-ished on the Speed City Records label in 2007.
- Demics….Heart Of The City….recorded live at the Cedar Lounge 1978. This is probably the first song I ever heard the Demics do live and it always reminds me of those times.
- Uranus….Secret Agent Man….the flip side of their top 10 single, You’re So Square and from 1980.
- Grant Smith & The Power….Keep On Runnin’…from their 1968 hit single.
- Doug Varty Band….Kickin’ Ass….from their 2012 Feel Free release and sounding a lot like AC DC.
- Thundermug….Africa….from their 1972 Strikes release and this was a hit single. Sometimes called the loudest band in the world, these guys are still around doing various musical projects.
- Sheep Look Up….Jumper….recorded live at Key West by Reid Smith (RIP) brother of guitarist Gilbert Smith and major cheerleader for the band.
- Thunder Queens….And Then We Go….from their 7” that came out just over a year ago and nominated in the punk category at the Forest City London Music Awards.
- Mononegatives….Sure Shock….from their first single and nominated in the punk category at the Forest City London Music Awards. They have a brand new album out and we’ll be playing a track from that on next week’s edition.
- Dave Rocket & The Jobbers….Hey Yo….from a brand new 7” and nominated in the punk category at the Forest City London Music Awards.
- Full Throttle….Lockdown….from their very first demo and they are in the High School Battle Of The Bands this week. Most likely the only band in the battle that has recorded a demo that’s been given radio airplay.
- Chuckee Zehr….Lie To Me Baby….from the recent Laugh Lines and Crow’s Feet release and nominated in the blues category at the Forest City London Music Awards.
- Rizdales….Honky Tonk Honeymoon…from their 2018 Lucky Enough release and mentions London and the Richmond Hotel in the lyrics. Nominated in the country category in the Forest City London Music Awards.
- Johnny & The Canadians….Say Yeah!...from their 1965 Columbia single and inducted into the Forest City London Hall Of Fame.
- Johnny & The Hurricanes….A Million Tears Ago…..as above, the flip side of the 7”
- Captain Scarlet & The Mysterons….Are You Really Gone….from Four Whom The Bell Tolls 7” that came with What Wave zine 16 from 1988. Drummer Andrew Lewis is a world renowned graphic artist and he designed the cover of our program guide and the postcard.
- He Said She Said….Time Well Spent….brand new and features Shane Sawyer, who is also in….
- Coaching For Sara….Come Down….brand new demo from this London pop/rock combo.
- The Kards….. Peach Taco….brand new home recorded demo from this band that normally does 60’s covers at the Legions/Halls around the London area.
- Spit Jr….Put Down Make Love….recent demo from this mystery player who could be a member of Dashboard Rattle.
- 63 Monroe….2 Minutes 38….from their 2006 Last Exit To Rawk’n’Roll and are in the Forest City London Music Hall Of Fame.
- Social Distance….Wasted Time….from their recent Stay Away release and one of the few London bands who released an actual CD last year!
- TVD… Clean My Plate….from their Avec release. T is for Mike Timmins, V is for Paul Veno and D is for Pete Dekoker, all veterans of many bands from London over the years.
- Hiroshima Hearts…Spend Your Money….from their 2016 Bone Music EP and now go under the name Jenn Marino and the Hearts.
- Cordcalling….When I Scream….from their 2008 When I Scream EP.
- Sinners….No Brains….from their 1980 7” and singer Paul has a new release coming out next week with his latest combo, Lowdown Dirty Mojos.
- Regulators….That’s Right Nothing’s Left….from their 1979 7”
- Stoves….Just My Style….from a live recording at the Cedar Lounge 1979.
- Zellots….Blades….from their 1981 demo recorded at EMAC studio.
- Shaky Jack Whiteside….I Won’t See You No More….from the Demics Covers release that came out in 1998. Jack was in Uranus, who alternated weeks with the Demics at the Cedar Lounge when they first started having punk bands there in 1978.
- Arco Di Scarico….Miss Pearl…demo from 1995 and this band became Viv Sun and the Black Holes and finally the Black Holes. Easily my fave rockabilly combo that came from London.
- Lonesome Ghost….Haunted By God….from their 2011 cassette and recorded live to air for a Radio WW show back in 2011.
- Fine Print….Nobody Loves You….from their 2011 cassette that came out on record store day.
- Flying Squad….Health Food….from Mr Garager’s Neighbourhood from 1989. A fave around WW HQ’s.
- Pink Cadillac Scat Cats….New York City…..acoustic version and a great way to close this show. This is from the Demics Covers release from 1998.
Thanx to all that took the time to tune in and give a listen. London has a TON of talent which gets overlooked by mainstream media, and hopefully this gave you a little sample of what’s out there for your listening pleasure. And once this lockdown is over, get out there and support your local talent. If you don’t do it, nobody else will.
And Thanx for all the emails, mail, messages, texts, phone calls, morse code, smoke signals etc. Back again next week, same time, same channel.
