As a kid, i remember reading that Johnny was the kindest of all the Ramones when it came to the fans.
 Johnny is my favourite Ramone. The guy was on the road in a van for 22 years with incredibly fucked up people, and was the main guy responsible for keeping it all together, and how the Ramones "sound" was executed was because of his guitar style, even over Tommys drum style. One of the funniest quotes I've ever heard is recently from Johnnys recent biography. It was along the lines of "Everyone thinks i was an asshole. I'm not an asshole...i just didn't like the people I was around". Can't argue that. Johnny Ramone rules. Joey and Dee Dee were not exactly saints either. If I stopped listening to a band because of how big of an asshole one of the members were, i'd have to rid 95% of my record collection :P

Sorry , that's an old one. But , most of us probably remember where we were when we bought our first Ramones record. I cheated , I taped a couple from friends , but our school book store had record and tape sales , all cut -outs. I got "Rocket To Russia" and half of "It's Alive". On cassette. I had an early Walkman that sounded fantastic , and recorded beautifully , too.

As far as the photos go, I think you're pretty much screwed. Last.fm is all Wiki-based, so anyone can add whatever they want and it seems like there's very little moderation going on over there.

MORE PEOPLE USED TO SAY "60's Punk" Than they do , now , I think....But , that confused younger people living on a steady diet of HC or 70's Punk. The "Garage Punk Unknowns " tag did'nt confuse me , but , Warren started that series before the phrase began to mean more to people than 60's Punk or 80's bands trying to play it (Some succeeding.). I can see where it would throw people off , now , but the band photos made it pretty obvious what was inside. It was'nt like the "Ear - Piercing Punk" comp with the misleading 70's Punk graphics. It's a great 60's Garage collection. Warren made it clear that he dug the 70's Punk bands , but was selective about it. In the liners to "Grave 7" he stressed The Ramones' (Then understated) importance , and that he'd release rarities by The Lurkers , Users , Sex Pistols ,etc., if he could get the rights. I think his comps , then were a hardsell.

I heard putting"100% PSYCHOTIC REACTION" ON THE COVER OF A"GRAVE " COMP WAS HIS WAY OF APPEALING TO THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR , PEOPLE WHO'D ONLY HEARD ANY OF THIS STUFF ON OLDIES RADIO , BACK WHEN YOU COULD ACTUALLY HEAR "NUGGETS" TYPE SONGS  ON THOSE STATIONS , WHICH WAS'NT A BAD THING AT ALL .

If only he included the word "and" between "garage" and "punk"...everything would be peachy keen!

I agree: less is more.

I would, if I were setting up a "garage punk hall of infamy", stick to the bands that were the raunchiest, most subversive, and notorious (in both sound, appearance, and/or demeanor).

There's a short interview with  Brett Smiley , by Greg Prevost , in the new Ugly Things....I did'nt know his proposed album was finally released in '03. I thought he was dead , but , then I found out he's still in NYC , PERFORMING WHEN HE'S PHYSICALLY ABLE (HE HAS HIV , BUT , NOT FULL BLOWN AIDS) ..... Well , of course , "Schlong Rock" would have to start with Black Oak Arkansas , then Iggy Pop , in general ,and , well , I don't go around lookin' at 'em too much , to tell the truth. JOHNNY WAS ITALIAN , AND I'M JEWISH ! OF COURSE WE DID'NT STUFF !!!". THERE YA GO.  Syl also told me a cop confronted Johnny , because he was wearing that same red leather suit in that photo. The Policeman thought Johnny had a bag of POT down his pants, when he saw the lengthy protrusion , and demanded that he take his pants off . "AH AIN'T GAAHHT NO UNDAWEAH !!!" , PROTESTED THUNDERS. What are the best underated/unknown UK Glam acts. All kinds sprang up in the mid 70s. Im curious to find more Brett Smiley material, like how do you get the tune cherry hookers. I also wonder about his band vice.

Andy Mccoy s band briard I thought was a punk gem as well. Tuff to the songs from the other finnish album he did pre-hanoi. Still searching it out(no home internet which which makes this quite the task) .Theres some fuzzy youtube vids though.

Whoever was still around from that era had moved on to other things , or reworked their sound , drastically ( "Love is Like Oxygen " , while a good song , is miles removed from "Hellraiser" or 'Ballroom Blitz". Of course , David Lee Roth got his schtick from Jim Dandy , so maybe , instead of , or along with , "Butt Rock" , we should call it "Schlong ROCK"..

I'd say it all depends, the one thing I really don't like though are the 'old farts' who remember what they like from back in the day and won't accept that things have often moved on from then. So whenever they have something to say about a new style it's negative because it isn't what they like and whenever a new band plays a style they do like they say "What's the point when I can listen to the original." I'm not sure whether such people actually like music as they claim or simply hate it while pursuing a hobby.

The problem is that these purist types are always trumped by purists from the musical wave that preceded them.
