    • ....I VAGUELY REMEMBER THE JOHN Candy / Lee Ving bonding. What movie was that ? I forget.

vING WAS IN "gET cRAZY" , TOO , AS A CARICATURE OF HIMSELF , i GUESS , "pIGGY" , AND DID A PRETTY ROCKIN' "hOOCHIE cOOCHIE MAN" (By FEAR , WHO WERE'NT IN THE MOVIE.. ).  Otherwise, the movie only eludes to Punk (And has the otherwise extremely rare "Chop Suey " by The Ramones.)....Malcolm MacDowell and Lou Reed are in it , too.

"VALLEY gIRL" CAME OUT PRETTY LATE for The Valley Girl craze , BUT IS STILL A PRETTY FUNNY 80'S TEEN COMEDY , ESPECIALLY FOR HOW BADLY Punk IS DEPICTED.

It starred a still little - known , not yet truly annoying , Nicholas Cage as thE male lead (It was best to watch it on TV, they used to censor one scene where he said "FUCK OFF!" , AND Made it say "SCREW OFF ! OKAY? JUST SCREW OFF !!". who says that?).  E.G. Daily (Pee Wee's Big Adventure) is in it , too.

"COTTON CANDY" IS STILL A CULT FLICK , Never had a proper commercial release , and I doubt it was ever re- run on Television , except maybe by local stations in need of time - filler. I don't know.

    • Hey, thanks for the recommendations John! I’ve seen most of this stuff, especially all the tv shows. However Breaking Glass and Jubilee are two I’ve never even heard of. I will try and seek them out from my local video rental place who specializes in sort of underground stuff. That way I too can watch them on tv as god intended. I don’t think I’ve seen the Ron Howard film either. Valley Girl, I think I saw this some years ago, but I’m having trouble remembering it.

There is some John Candy movie, where him and Eugene Levy are limo drivers. Anyway there is a scene with Lee Ving in it. John’s character goes into a diner with a bunch of punks, they spray paint all over him, start moshing…etc. Kind of a funny scene. That is all the punk action in the movie, but in my opinion it’s worth watching just because John Candy is in it.

    • Bingo.  I think other bands (Fugs , Red Crayola , Dolls , Stooges , Blue Cheer , Early Alice Cooper Group , e.g.) were tuned into the same idea , earlier , but The Ramones were totally influenced , and boiled all these disparate ideas down to a single shot.

I interviewed Arthur Lee in '94  , and told him about what Tommy Ramone said , that BANDS LIKE LOVE HAD THE SAME KIND OF ENERGY AS THE RAMONES , They just did it with more volume. Arthur replied "That's one man's opinion , and it's beautiful that he would say that , but , I don't know what the volume had to do with it....Except , in the early days , Love used to do a really heavy version of "You I'll Be Following" , that was probably closer to what he was saying....".    Yeah , it's on my bucket list , too.

      ....CAN'T HEAR EVERYTHING ,THO' .

      oh , and LOVE , Ramones , first (SELF - TITLED)  LPs , 7 SONGS , EACH SIDE , 7 AND 7 IS.

    • Ah!! I would love to read that Ritchie Stern interview if you could ever find it!

I think my favorite quote ever on the Ramones was when Tommy said: ""What we had was an idea that it's not the virtuosity that counts; it's the ideas themselves that are important. Even the Dolls and the Stooges were trying to be real bands. We were the first band to intellectually grasp the notion that virtuosity is not only not necessary, but might get in the way."

      What a guy.

    • ....STERN ,      Thank you , I forgot his last name. And , you're right , Dee Dee , reportedly , identified as Bi , but dug women more than men.  Right again about Fields and Vega , too , but , that's just what I read in an interview with Stern.... That he was openly Gay , and it caused some friction.....I don't think he said with whom , but , gee , I wonder.

Yeah , as I say , there WAS an interview where Richie talked about the early Ramones , as well as the Nuns , but , I forget where I saw it. It seems a couple of stories he told were confirmed by Dee Dee in other interviews , like Dee Dee's Mom threatening to ruin his Stooges records.   It's been a long time since I saw the article ,  so my memory may not be 100% accurate. But , I remember Richie saying , for various reasons , he did'nt get along with the others , tho' maybe not all of them.

There was a show in '77 in San Francisco that predated The Sex Pistols' last show - The Ramones , The Dictators , and The Nuns  (It just now dawned on me , both The Pistols and The Beatles gave their farewell performances in San Francisco.). My Sister - in - Law was there.

The conceptualist , that he was . I like that , that's good.

    • I didnt know Ritche Stern was gay. Not that it matters...but it's definitely a tidbit i was unaware of! Strange anyone would have a problem with it though, considering Dee Dee was most likely bi, and Arturo and Danny Fields were both gay, aren't they?

Hard to find any info on the first Ritchie.. Strange nobody ever did an interview with him. It's easier to find info on Ira Nagel (the other possible Ramones bassist in the beginning) than it is Ritchie Stern.

Really sucks about Tommy. Obviously not the songwriter, but he was definitely the conceptualist of the band.

    • YOU ARE so right on all counts. Personally , I never got it with Spencer. Liked him in The Gibson Bros. , but , he was part of a band , not the focal point.... I can't fault him for striking while the iron was hot. I thought his first , pre - godlike status , LP sounded like Gibson's retreads.....Then , he basically took Jeff Evans' thing and made it profitable....

A friend thanked me, about 20 years after the fact , for dragging him out with me to see Pussy Galore , and how it was one of the best shows he'd ever seen. That's funny , because I never SAW that band....

    • Speaking of John Spencer Blues Explosion.....they played here and we left after about 5 or 10 songs.....all sounded the same, with the stupid yelling of Blues Explosion between songs.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. But people loved it!  Did see Spencers other combo Heavy Trash and really dug that band as they all worked hard!

Just brought up JSBX since you mentioned Bloodshot was opening for them.....and i wouldn't have paid to see Spencer either! And the people that like Spencer probably wouldn't get Bloodshot Bill!

    • Dave , Well , of course , when I wrote it (The lyrics , anyway.) Derek was barred from playing in the states .  The ban was lifted about four years ago , and he's played Chicago twice since then. There was a big welcome back show with Bloodshot Bill , NoBunny, Tandoori Knights , and White Mystery. I had already made plans to go to Mexico at that time. Derek did invite me to play on the show , for THAT , I would have cancelled my vacation , but , he thought all I would have to do was tell the owner I'd like to play , too , and he'd put me on the bill .  IF ONLY.    Then , he came back , and opened for Jon Spencer. I should have gone to that gig , but I DID'NT WANT TO PAY SPENCER'S PRICE TO SEE BLOODSHOT BILL DO AN ABBREVIATED SET. (excuse the caps. It's late...).

Now that Bloodshot Bill is PERE Bloodshot Bill , with a beautiful little girl , it seems like he still gigs as much , but has to reroute his trips. I guess. I did talk to him , briefly , about possibly returning to Chicago , and he said he does want to come back , soon.

So , if that happens , Chicago will witness the return of Bloodshot Battles Overdrive.

    • John Battles says

Bloodshot Bill - we want him in the USA . BLOODSHOT BILL , MAKE IT SOONER THAN TODAY.

John: you get him way more than we do in sleepy London Ontario...Bloodshot Bill has done several east coast tours and spots for Norton Records lately. Seems like he's constantly touring, maybe he's just avoiding Chicago and sleepy London Ontario for some bizarre reason....

All you music lovers out there, I guess like me you buy a ton of magazines as well as records, Which are the best magazines/fanzines to send review copies of my latest release. (The Snails / Garage rock from Greece, great stuff).
or simply whats your favorite magazine/fanzine.

As its on vinyl is cost a fortune to post, I can't afford to sending it to magazines that won't review but will run down to there local second hand record store.

looking forward to some replys and thanks for your help!

    • Holy FUCK!!!!! Killer video!!!!

Thanx for telling me about the Dutch Panic!!!

    • July 25, 2014 8:32 AM CDT
    • Cool! Yeah, the album is called "13" and it has Baby Please on it. It's reissue that came out a couple of years back. The original goes for a lot, apparently. Love that video!

    • July 25, 2014 7:30 AM CDT
    • Hell Yeah! That Panic is fantastic! I only recently heard of them. I was in Amsterdam this past spring and I always try and find out about local bands wherever I travel. Somebody suggested I check’em out. I was unable to find any of their records. What is the one you got? I think the singer, Peter ten Seldam was in several bands. Check out this video; doesn’t it look like just about the greatest time ever!!!! Such a party!!!

    • Weird....I was just about to say that I bought an album by a band called Panic last week. But they're dutch, and from '78.

    • Nice little hat-tip to Fowley there. I was unaware of the recent movies, I will have to check them out. I did know about the bios, but have yet to get around to obtaining/ reading any. School the past few years has severely restricted fun-time readings. The Ugly Things article on Fowley maybe 3 or 4 issues back was really good.

      Way to go, Howie!

    • The Amazing Snakeheads
      Amphetamine Ballads
      Domino Records

The Amazing Snakeheads Amphetamine Ballads are all that is wrong and right about the commercialization garage and rock-a-billy, 'You aint gonna turn it off because it's better than the radio, you didn't download the latest podcast, and you kind of like it." Firmly on the side of Nick Cave's Grinderman, but parrying the spirit of Lux, Jim Heath, and even a little Tav Falco (to get the southern boys on board) in places. The A' Snakeheads got the rock star looks and Euro pedigree that Domino Records love in their bands (sans the Archie Bronson Outfit). With that comes the slick thump on the propulsive, reverb drenched tracks like "I'm a Vampire", and "Flatlining". The Vimeo ready tunes like 'Where is my Knife" just begs for a black and white video with tatooed girls behaving badly. Interspersed with the three piece making the rest of us look plain and themselves sounding sweet if not growly.

To be fair/ foewwarned it veers a little too far down Arctic Monkey Lane at times and none more so than "Memories" and the stream of concious "Heading for a Heartbreak" that will leave you screaming for Winger. At times you almost begin to wonder why you kept listening and make you wonder, "if this isn't my cup of tea why am I listening?" Still you may not turn it off...

Still we need to provide more gateway drugs, more informercials to get us back/ lure others to the Cramps, Rockabilly, and southern sounds of the Panther Burns. The White Stripes are gone, bands like Ex-Cult only happen once in a blue moon, and we have the internet. So, please allow me to introduce The Amazing Snakeheads...
