    • Having an adventurous spirit, when I get promo CDs from artists I’ve never heard of at KSFR-FM, if it looks interesting, I’ll consider playing a track on my radio show without listening to it first. But before I do this, I always check the credits to make sure there are no cellos. Seriously, with few exceptions, few instruments sap the rock ’n’ roll out of a song faster than a dreary cello.

So imagine my surprise when I popped Wheel of Talent, the new CD by The Fleshtones, into my car stereo only to strings — a cello and a violin, to be exact — on the very first song.

      Nooooooo!

Actually, the strings on “Available,” which pop up later in the album on “How to Say Goodbye,” turned out to be more of a slight misstep, perhaps a jarring texture, than a deal-breaker. Wheel of Talent, produced by Detroit’s Jim Diamond, shouldn’t be seen as The Fleshtones’ attempt to channel Mantovani.

Elsewhere on the album you’ll find a ton of The Fleshtones’ trademark garage-forged “Super Rock.” It’s a high-octane noise that they’ve been pounding out for decades. Queens natives Peter Zaremba (vocals, keyboards, harmonica) and Keith Streng (vocals, guitar) formed the band in 1976, playing a pumped-up hybrid of garage rock, punk, New Wave, and soul.

Despite Zaremba’s stint hosting an alt-rock show on MTV in the ’80s, Super Rock never got to be super famous. As they sing on the frantic, autobiographical “It Is as It Was” on this album, “We didn’t have a whole a lot of money/But we did what we wanted to.”

I love the classic Fleshtones sound, so my favorites here are hard-driving tunes like “What You’re Talking About,” “Roofarama,” and “Veo La Luz,” in which The Fleshtones go bilingual — it’s got a fuzz-heavy guitar (with a riff right out of The Yardbirds’ “Heart Full of Soul”) and Spanish lyrics. I wouldn’t be surprised if this were an outtake from their 2012 EP en Español, Quatro x Quatro.

(This song has apparently been in the band’s repertoire for a long time. Fooling around on YouTube recently, I stumbled across a 1988 live performance of the Fleshtones performing the English-language version, “I See the Light,” originally done in the ’60s by The Music Explosion.)

“Hipster Heaven” is a good-natured, fast-rocking poke at one of The Fleshtones’ favorite targets in recent years, the contemporary hipster (this one’s got “a new tattoo and money from home”). There’s even a decent tribute to The Ramones here with “Remember the Ramones.” (“You don’t know what it means/To hit the Bowery and make the Scene/For a rock ’n’ roller and a kid from Queens.”)

But, getting back to those cello songs, it’s obvious on Wheel of Talent that The Fleshtones are trying to stretch beyond their garage/punk roots. Recorded in Spain by renowned Spanish garage-punk producer Jorge Explosion, the strings on “Available” and “How to Say Goodbye” give those tunes a definite retro pop sheen. The former sounds like a rocking Fleshtones tune with some weird strings joining in, but the latter sounds like something that might have appeared on AM radio in the late ’70s (though it also reminds me a little of The Decemberists).

There are other tracks that also seem to be aiming for richer textures. For instance, on the classy “For a Smile,” guest vocalist Mary Huff (from Southern Culture on the Skids) sounds a little like Jackie De Shannon. “Tear for Tear” is a slightly jittery stab at the greasy early ’60 teen-pop sound. It made me think of Gene McDaniels’ “Tower of Strength.” And surprisingly good is the horn-fortified, soulful “What I’ve Done Before,” on which The Fleshtones sound closer to Van Morrison than they’ve ever come before.

Once I got (almost) used to the idea of The Fleshtones with strings and came to an uneasy peace with those songs, the only other track that bothered me was “The Right Girl,” which is sung in a phony British accent. If you’d told me that David Bowie was doing guest vocals here, I’d probably buy that story. Instead, I suspect this is some kind of in-joke among the band. But I don’t get it.

All in all, Wheel of Talent is a good album with a few bugs in it. It’s good to see The Fleshtones still willing to experiment. But next time, I hope they forget the fake English accents and the cello.

      * Todo Roto by Wau y Los Arrrghs!!! Listening to The Fleshtones singing “Veo La Luz” made me hungry for some of the real stuff. Fortunately, the premier Spanish-language garage rockers of this era, Wau y Los Arrrghs!!!, released a new album not too many months ago. It’s produced by Jorge Explosion, who also produced The Fleshtones’ sessions in Spain. But no, Mr. Explosion didn’t bring in a string section for Todo Roto.

Led by singer Juanito Wau, this is a fuzz ’n’ Farfisa band (or it that a Vox organ?) that never lets up. Each song, it seems, rocks harder than the last one. Even the ones that start off slow tunes like “No Me Veras Caer” are permanently scarred by Wau’s crazy screams.

While Wau, naturally, is the focus of most of the tunes, his Arrrghs are a tight little unit. On the instrumental “Rescate Griego” they prove they could even be a pretty exciting surf band on their own.

      * Records to Ruin Any Party Vol. 4 by various Voodoo Rhythm artists. I first heard Wau y Los Cantan en Español, which was released on my favorite Swiss label — and in fact, one of my favorite labels anywhere, Voodoo Rhythm.
      Arrrghs!!! on their first album,

How can you describe a Voodoo Rhythm collection to someone unfamiliar with the artists? Here, verbatim, is how label owner “Beat-Man” Zellar (better known as “Rev. Beat-Man”) explains it in his promo one-sheet. “This compilation may contains Dirty Words and way too Loud Guitars Trash Blues Garage Punk, overdriven Boogie Blues Folk and Weimer Republic 1920s Jazz Cajun and Pure Snotty One Man Band Trash Punk.”

Got that? The English is broken but the spirit is clear.

The sampler features label stalwarts like those German blues punks The Juke Joint Pimps, the Swiss garageman Roy and The Devil’s Motorcycle, New Zealand songwriter Delaney Davidson, and not one but two bands — The Monsters and Die Zorros — involving Beat-Man himself.

Among the artists on this collection that I’d never heard of before were Becky Lee and Drunkfoot, a one-woman band from Arizona that performs a slow, sad, pretty love song called “Old Fashioned Man”; The New Primitives, a South African garage band; and Heart Attack Alley, a New Zealand group whose sound might be described as neo-skiffle.

Voodoo Rhythm proves once again to be a virtual United Nations of trash rock. Which is why I love them.

    • "Duty Now" is great! Gotta be their most fucked up album, not counting the Hardcore Devo stuff.

You probably already know that the new Teengenerate record is actually the clean '94 "Egg Studio" sessions of Get Action. I wouldn't say it's necessarily better than Get Action  (a top 10 alltime favourite) , just different. It's well worth picking up. And by "clean", I mean clean by Teengenerate standards. It's still REALLY dirty. Comes with great pics and liner notes too.

    • I pretty much like all DEVO albums, even the one that came out a few years ago - Not Hardcore Devo (which is amazing), but the studio LP. My favourite is probably the second one, Duty Now For the Future—or at least it has my favourite song "Smart Patrol/ Mr. DNA."

I've heard nothing of the new Teengenerate record, would love to pick that up. "Boy From Nowhere" is a killer song

Since the ast post, I got a reissue of the Rings - I Wanna Be Free (Chiswick) 7''. Been trying to find an original for a while, but this will do for now. Just recently learned the singer for this band was the drummer of the Pink Fairies and the Pretty Things at one point. Crazy.

    • February 27, 2014 7:56 AM CST
    • Non new releases I picked up recently:

Devo- Oh No It's Devo. (Never bothered with anything after the first 3....but after hearing this, I decided that it's my 2nd favourite after their 1st. Underrated album)

Status Quo- On the Level. (A dollar bin record that's way better than the ridiculous album cover would imply. Actually, that can be said for most Status Quo records up to the 1975.)

      New releases
Teengenerate - 5 Covers EP 7'' (includes a killer cover of "Boy From Nowhere", which I like to think is the "Blank Generation"  for rural kids who grew up in the sticks)

Liquor Store- In the Garden. (Picked this up last November. My favourite album of 2013. Has a Dictators/Radio Birdman vibe to it)

    • Got several things recently

From Ugly Pop, I got the Bent Wind and Thor's Hammer reissue LPs. Both of which are are totally killer records and look amazing. Bent Wind is heavey psych from Toronto and Thor's Hammer is some great Icelandic garage punk - both originally released in the mid 60s

A friend, went back to the UK for the holidays and grabbed me some stuff from current London bands - Unfortunately it took until late Feb for us to get together...stuff he picked up for me:

No - Great Space Lp - (Hardcore, ex Shitty Limmits - better than average)
Shopping - Consumer Complaints Lp (This reminds me of the Slits or a surfy type Suburban Lawns - female fronted lo-fi, surf inspired rock 'n' roll)
DiE - 7'' ep (D beat - Discharge sounding UK 82 hardcore, I think this is somebody from Quango?, this record is okay, but same as tonnes of other current hardcore, slightly better)
Personnel - 7'' (Current powerpop, made obvious with a rotary phone on the cover - it's okay, but I'm not all that big on powerpop revival—my friend digs them a lot, so maybe if this is your thing you too may like them)

Also got two demos which I have yet to listen to. Both London bands as well.
      Frau - demo cassette
      Ano - demo cassette

    • IT WORKS. That's a great picture....The ad is'nt showing , here , anymore. 2008?That's when Roky was between bands. He played out with a band that had no name, and The Black Angels and Okkervil River backed him , until he finally setled on Hounds of Baskerville. This current tour has to be grueling ,esp. in this weather , bu t, they wap it up in Florida !  Roky is doing a LOT of ELEVATORS songs.....We never thought we'd see the day...........

    • February 26, 2014 4:53 PM CST
    • Now that's weird! I was trying to post from my iPad a picture I took of Roky back then. Have no idea where that ad came from. Tried to edit it but it won't go away.

Let's see if it works here

    • Steve , was this "H" Salon ad I'm getting related to your message about The Night Beats ? Or is it possible I'm getting more spam (Which would NOT be your doing , of course.). I know you probably don't know what I'm off my head about , THIS time.......I'M NOT HEARING A LOT OF NEW PSYCH THAT'S DOING IT FOR ME , BUT , I'M A CROTCHETY OLD MAN.......A lot of stuff that's popular , here , is more influenced by Japanese Noise Psych , which is not my thing.

    • February 26, 2014 4:22 PM CST
    • Barrence is the first artist on Bloodshot I've cared about in yonks. It's too bad he has to go up against Roky , but ,I GUESS IT'S RARE , NOW , that there would'nt be fierce competition for someone you or I would want to see. I have'nt been to sxsw since 1993. Saw all the acts I wanted to see , inc. Roky's first comeback attempt show , no overlap , spent a total of eight dollars on shows. Thta was a LOOOOOONG time ago. Tho' bands like The Nervebreakers usually do free shows at the same time , not tied in with sxsw.

    • February 26, 2014 2:20 AM CST
    • Looks like he's having another icecream social at Threadgill's during sxsw. Bad news is that it conflicts with Bloodshot records party at the Yard Dog. Donor want yo miss Barrence Whitfield or The Waco Brothers

    • February 26, 2014 1:50 AM CST
    • Roky 2008

It was 2008. Roky did play last. (It was billed as "Roky Erikson's Ice Cream Social") great show. I enjoy the Black Angels, but my favorite of the new psychedelic bands is The Night Beats.

    • February 25, 2014 10:42 PM CST
    • How long ago was this? Some people have told me they were better when their first album came out. i HEARD IT AT THE TIME , THOUGHT IT WAS OK.  But , The bLACK aNGELS have a decidedly younger crowd , that's cool. Us old fucks came to see Roky , bu t, i stuck around to see if THE B.A.s were up to the hype I'd heard......Did'nt DO IT FOR ME. bUT , IT'S REALLY HARD , FOR ME , TO ASK ANYONE TO FOLLOW ROKY. I usually have to leave the room , or the area , if it's outdoors , after he plays.THE ONLY BAND I EVER SAW FOLLOW HIM AND POSSIBLY MATCH HIS STRENGTH WAS ? AND tHE Mysterians at The Ponderosa Stomp , and they were playing at the TOP of their game that night ......

    • February 25, 2014 7:02 PM CST
    • I saw Roky on the same bill as Black Angels during SWSW. Both were great. That was the first time I'd heard the Angels, though my daughter already was a fan. No computers, no light show ( it was outside during the afternoon)

    • February 24, 2014 1:01 AM CST
    • Roky's set was an uncontested triumph. Black Angels were a bit on the annoying side. All about the gear and the big computerized light show. They can PLAY , it's not that , but that Spacemen 3 - Scientists feedback thing is kind of old , now..... They were fine , if taken in 5 - 10 minute intervals. But , they're still no Lithium Xmas or Peyote Cowboys , to be sure. For the younger set , they were the stars of the show , but , Roky and The Hounds of Baskerville laid down the original Psych , with smatterings of Horror Rock classics , and the Super Punk put - down , "Don't Slander Me" . He was singing at his peak , or close to it , most of the show , and the band killed it.

    • Speaking as a former Texas resident , I think that's hilarious !!!   But......Texas , especially Austin , has this weird dynamic , where they can't decise whether to be liberal or conservative , tho' conservativism usually wins. Who knows ? I think Exene ought to go wherever she feels comfortable , and can get the most things done.....She does have MS , and is doing remarkably well for someone in her position. Still does great shows. I admire her for moving forward , like she has. I think if I'd lived anywhere as long as she's lived in California , I'd want a change , too......But , not like that. Did Texas. Have some good memories , met some good people , but , have no desire to return.

    • February 25, 2014 9:37 AM CST
    • From what I've heard, she is supposedly moving out of California because it's gotten "too liberal" for her, so she's moving to fucking Texas. Go figure.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist Feb 20/2014: Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians Part 1

Welcome to Part 1 of Psychos and Other Unusual Canadians....judging by the overabundance of phone calls this week, you people are either digging this show or you realize that you're as much of an unusual Canadian as I am. Hoping for the latter. Well dig in, this is only the tip of the iceberg of what's in the WW Archives!

      1. The Gruesomes....Psycho....live at Larry's in Toronto, 3/29/1986. This was the Easter Og Weekend Special and the first time The Gruesomes were allowed out of their Montreal homebase. Also on the show that night were Deja Voodoo and Chris Houston, both of whom appear later in this playlist. And this was one of the few times I heard The Gruesomes play Psycho live...went through a ton of live tapes looking for another version and came up with nothing.

      2. The Sadies... Black Sheep....from the Tales Of The Rat Fink Soundtrack CD. Ya, I've played this song on Radio WW many times as it sums up my life perfectly!

      3. Nihilist Spasm Band....No Canada....1967 flexi and re-issued on CD 1996. 1967 was Canada's Centennial year, lots and lots of celebrations and this was the anti! Totally off the wall, artnoise combo who used to play weekly in London Ontario, that are huge in the world of noise.

      4. Orie Hitt Machine....Killer Inside Me....totally loony from London Ontario.

      5. The Spoons...After The Institution....1980 7" from this combo who went mainstream new wave/synth/dance in the mid 80's. Remember seeing them at The Cedar Lounge here in London back in the late 70's and any song about being put away fit right into this episode.

      6. Crash Kills 5....Special School....7" from this combo that morphed into Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet....songs about being special fit right into the late 70's/early 80's musical era.

      7. Botched Suicides....Nuthouse Inn...from the Ottawa Gaga compilation. Another song about being put away...

      8. Mainline...Brain Damage...from the Canada Our Home And Native Land LP. This one prominently features Joe Mendelson, presently an artist living, literally living on the fringes of society. We'll be hearing more from Joe on future episodes!

      9. David Clayton Thomas....Brainwashed....from the Made In Canada Volume 3 compilation. David fronted Blood Sweat And Tears, a major band in the late 60's/early 70's and one of the first to do the jazz rock thing. This was before he became brainwashed, and was a struggling artist on the Toronto scene that also spawned Neil Young amongst others.

      10. Chris Houston....Surfin' On  Heroin...from the Hate Filled Man LP. This is the only LP that i own that comes with one square foot of astro turf!! Ya, one square foot of plastic grass! Chris was in the Forgotten Rebels, where he composed this tune and has  been doing music ever since. Caught him live this past summer and his take on the world is totally hilarious!! We'll be hearing more from Chris in episodes to come.

      11. Fridge Magnets...Hypodermic Beach...from a late 80's demo and this song also appeared on a WW cassette. If you only learn one thing from listening to Radio WW, it better be; Don't Do Heroin! I repeated that twice during this show and hope everyone got the message.

      12. Deja Voodoo...Surfin' On Mars...from the Worst Of LP. Deja Voodoo were a duo from Montreal who invented sludgeabilly, formed their own record company that released some of the best music to come out of Canada, became stars of college radio and promptly broke up in 1990 when  they turned 30. And we still miss them after all these years! We'll be hearing more from Deja Voodoo as well as many of the OG Records stars!

      13. Von Drats....Dratsylvania....from the Dratsylvania CD. From 2010, and these characters would dress up for every show (quite often in matching costumes) and play some of the wildest surf, monster and 60's garage punk you've ever heard! Quite often they had a character (The Canadian Wolfman) dressed up in costume to introduce them and invoke the crowd into a frenzy! If these guys had been around in the 80's, they would have been on OG Records!

      14. Transylvania 500....Go 500!...from their only 7" on Wolf Beat Records. Count Suckula on the keyboards and Wolfboy on the drums...either a budget version of The Mummies or 2 totally whacked out individuals as they would run around the crowd when playing live shows and do just about anything for laughs! Another band that woulda been on OG Records if they were around in the 80's!

      15. Transylvania 500....Death Drag...as above. Had to play both songs on this 7" as they are both equally stupid. Just the way i like my music!

      16. The Dead Bolts....Torture Chamber...from a 7". This one is totally over the top whacko...just listen to those lyrics! And it's on  Coffin Records, outta Hamilton Ontario.

      17. Cardboard Brains....Babies Run My World...from the And Now Live From Toronto, The Last Pogo. Aptly named band for this show and I've loved this song since first hearing it way too many years ago! This was the Cardboard Brains at their finest!!

Hope you dug the loonies tonite and we'll have more on part 2 in 2 weeks time! Next week we've gotta pay tribute to Marty Thau, who worked with ? and The Mysterians when they broke with 96 Tears, worked with the NY Dolls at the beginning, The Ramones at their infancy, early Fleshtones, early Real Kids, Suicide and sooooooo many others!! A true innovator in the music that we dig!  And a trib to Bob Devo who passed away this week, another highly influential band that we all laughed at when they first came out. Then after many listens of their first LP, most of us agreed, these guys are genius!! Yet, most probably know them as an insult to punk rockers back in the day. How many times did a carload of heavy metal mutants yell "Hey Devo" to you when you were minding your own business! Way too many times for me.

And thanx for all the phone calls....way too many times there was more than one call coming in at a time on this show, so I missed many calls, sorry, I'm just a one man show! And thanx for all the emails, facebook likes, facebook messages and Heys!!
