I know this will sound stupid, but because of Happy Days, I got introduced to Rock Around the Clock (yeah, I watched it when it first came on and that was the theme). Before that, I liked CCR, which as far as I'm concerned was the closest thing to rock and roll when it came to the mainstream. So it must have been that drum beat and guitar that got me to liking Bill Haley cuz except for CCR, I liked Nuthin'. Can you imagine trying to convert Kids to Bill Haley or Buddy Holly when KC and the Sunshine band were the Shit? I'm being sarcastic of course. I thought Buddy Holly was awesome and I was only 11. What's wrong with me? I didn't like the BEE GEES?

Oh I rave about it all the time to squares, to friends, to punks, to hipsters, to mod snobs who think RNR started with the Beatles... on and on.

It's nice to see people look weird at you when you do the whack whack dance, throw your hands into the air like a spazz and spin yerself like crazy, when the more popular cuts like the Cramps, or the Phantom or Hasil come up. The indiekids all find it so snickery funny when they see you act "out of place." "Uncool" - you know it.

It seems like this is musical wasteland here in these locales, people like to get smart about music. Tell them about 50's/60's Punk they go: "But... but... Punk as a recipent streak of music in intellectual understanding was developed and established in the 80's!" What do you say to that? DANCE AND GO WILD IS WHAT! FREAK RAT OUT! DO THE ALIGATOR! DO THE PIG! DO THE LOWDOWN DIRTY RAWK N ROLL HIPSHAKE! Be the best example that this sound is alive like a box full of cobras.

Seriously, I keep smugging it into every party. People always go like: "This is so loud" I say: "Babay, this ain't Muse or the Killers." Seriously again, I saw people freak out to Bo Diddley so their whole workday was messed with. ROCK'N'ROLL destroyed their mind! ...and put it back together! You don't work the same way after it - and that's a good thing.

Yeah, Cyco, that's my story too, pretty much. I liked her in The People vs. Larry Flint. Other than the highlights of the Kurt days, that's about all I know about her. Except that she's, shall we say, emotionally unstable and given to outbursts and does (did?) very bad drugs. But yeah, the album is gorgeous, brutal, even heartrending. Maybe a little too lushly produced, but hey. It's convincing, sounds like the real thing to me. Art, not image, I guess I mean.

Back when Kurt Cobain was still alive, I bought Hole's "Live Through This", and I still think: The best album Nirvana never made. I don't care about Courtney Love, and I don't know any other albums by Hole, but this one album is great.

I was never too wowed by her previous work, but the new album, Nobody's Daughter, sounds real good to me.

Last weekend, I got to listen to a copy of The Trashmen's Surfin' Bird LP in a record store, only knowing (and quite liking) them for the obvious "Surfin' Bird". I was surprised about how cheesy the rest of the record sounded, and I ended up buying The Fall.

Does anybody else think that The Trashmen are hopelessly overrated?

Here in Italy (as in any non-anglophone country I guess) one of the first question when startin a rock band,is "Which language we sing?"

 One point may be that if you want to be more authentic and realistic you'd better talk directly to ones who are listening to you and choose your own language so they can understand you.

Another point is that rock'n'roll ain't a typical italian product. Who plays it would like to intend it to its original source and it's not so much important if pronunciation or grammar are not completely correct (Ramones were them? The Zeros don't sing like Teengenerate,who cares?)

Now I'd like to know your other point of view and what's your favorite italian garage band,if you had one!

This is difficult. I have a better grasp of "the best" or "the coolest" than my own personal favorite. Some songs that I think are pretty near perfect are--

Worker's Song, Dropkick Murphys

Money, That's What I Want. I have no question in my mind about that. Probably the Sonics' version.

Another vote for the Dead Boys, though I feel the Pagans are a close second with songs like "Shit Called Love" and "Not Now No Way".

I thought that pre Dead Boys "Frankenstein" release (Sympathy or Dionysus????) was pretty cool too.

The Pagans stuff is pretty cool but yeah, really gotta go with that Dead Boys album.

I didn't really know much about that scen until I read From the Velvets to the Voidoids 15 years ago. At that time, it was still hard to come by (except Dead Boys and Pere Ubu).

I don't have that import version of Damaged, but I'd assume that'd be the version from the Louie Louie 7" that Dez Cadena sang on. He was my fave Flag singer, perhaps as he was the first one I had seen them with. Others have told me they prefer Keith Morris and Ron Reyes over Dez. Rollins was not a bad fit with the band the first year or so. I saw their first LA area gig with him after they came back from the tour in which they picked him up. I speculate that he had a desire to prove himself to the home town crowd. But once he became established in Flag it seemed to become the Henry Rollins Show as opposed to a Black Flag show. They kind of evolved into a "jam" band of sorts from that point to the end and lost that manic energy that had attracted such a rabid following. So I would say everything up to and including Damaged as well as the "Everything Went Black" double LP of demos is what I'd consider essential Black Flag material.

Hello! My band The Experiments just released our new album, that we recorded ourselves. You can find it at our website for free: http://theexperiments.com We used the following gear: We recorded in Pro Tools with a Project Mix I/O (8 channels) and 2 more channels though a ART DPS II into the Project Mix's ADAT in. We used the following mics (drums): Overheads: Oktava MK-012-01 (pair) Kick: AKG D112 Snare: Shure SM57 (under) Rack Tom R: Sennheiser e609 silver Rack Tom L: Audix f10 Floor Tom: AKG D11/XLR High Hat: CAD pencil condenser The snare we did under because no matter where we put it over, the drummer hit it with his stick. That's also a big reason we used the Sennheiser on the tom, it's low profile kept it from getting hit. In retrospect, I think miking the snare under gave us too thin a sound. The guitars we did in the same room (different day), with the Sennheiser on one speaker and a Shure SM-7b on another. Vocals were done in a bathroom with the Shure SM7b We're on a budget (who isn't) and that was the best we could afford.

I had the same double take moment this weekend! What the hell??!?!?!!!
