One of my favorite mix-tape topics. Not songs that were originally GP, but songs from other genres that got the GP treatment.

A few of my top picks:
Zeke - Rhiannon (by Fleetwood Mac)
Minor Threat - Stepping Stone (Monkees)
The Crosstops - Six Days On The Road (Dave Dudley)

Another point on The Detroit Cobras manyof their tunes are covers, old R and B, Motown B-sides etc. Really like them too.

I also dig Ty's cover of "Cherry Red" and his whole EP "Ty Rex" where he covers 6 T-Rex tunes.  Great stuff.

anyone know of a good punkified cover of Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison? I know Ty Segall did a version, I just wanted to see of anyone else did.

Yeah, the Slits version is ace. You gotta love all those Detroit Cobras versions as well. Folc Records are planning a "Queremos ser negro (We Wanna be Black). With Los Chicos at the helm it's bound to be ace. We've also just done a cover of Gino Washington's Outta This World. 'tis up on our page if you fancy checking it out.

''Piranha" by I Spit on Your Gravy" is a thoroughly whacked take on guess which already - Garage Punk song by The Monkees , but , originally done , in a more Punked out  manner , by Paul Revere and The Raiders . HA HA. There's a good quote for ya - "The Monkees were cool. They MIMED well" , Mark Lindsay. I heard him tell somebody that !

Also , Quad Pi (Pre - Lithium Xmas ) ,did a slow , trembly ,dark , also almost unrecognizable, "Last Train To Clarksville" as (Last Train To)  Mortville , in homage to John Waters.

Pure Hell's cover of Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walking.

Also, although not a cover, Andre Williams' garage punk reboot of his disco song "Whip the Booty" is maniacally fun and trashy.  You can find that version on his classic Black Godfather LP.

Right now I dig The Last's cover of "Be Bop A Lula," it's painful and spooky and has the same heartwrenching anger of John Cale's cover of "Heartbreak Hotel."  The Barracuda's version of "Codeine" completely cracks me up, it's so *sincere!*  And I adore The Incredible Staggers version of "Little Sister" right up and down my spine!

But what stands out in my mind is The Morlocks version of "Teenage Head!" It is one of the greatest garage tunes ever, and the Morlocks just bring it right home!  In fact I can't think of anything I'd love more than to hear Wild Evel and The Trashbones cover that song!
