    • I quite enjoy The Go. The first CD is pretty awesome though I think the Jim Diamond engineering gives them a great sound. The drummer of that band kicks ass. Check em out - http://thegodetroit.com/home.htm

Last I heard Don Was was helping them record a new album. They disappear and then pop up with a new album every once in awhile. Not sure what their story is, but I love em.

    • Yeah, I totally agree. Painted Lady is a cool dive bar, but the sound/stage is hardly optimal. I would have to say they win the prize for nastiest/grossest men's room in Detroit venues.

Donovan's Pub in Mexican Town is an unassuming little no-frills Irish bar (frequented by the local Mexicans, ironically) that has some cool pop-up shows with some of the cooler Detroit garage-sters. It might be worth seeing if they have a show that weekend.

The painted lady is still operating as far as I know, and that's another place to consider, but a lot of bands don't like their awkward stage.  It's a little cramped and oriented in strange way. It's a cool place though.  Hamtramck is a great place to see good lesser known acts at smaller venues.  There are lots of bars/venues concentrated in a relatively small area.  My list is not exhaustive by any means.  I just wanted to give you some decent options (based on my experience) of places that might be feasible to get into on short notice.  note:  the magic stick might not be that easy, but it's one of detroit's best venues for this type of music.

    • Very cool. Detroit is a wondrous and strange place.

      What is your band?

I wish I had some info to give you, but it looks like The Blue Squares have given you as much info as I could offer.

Is the Painted Lady still open? That place, although a complete dive, is pretty cool.

I am sure Jim Diamond (Ghetto owner) can point you in the direction of some good stuff.

    • My band is going to be in Detroit Nov 25-27th to record at Ghetto and we'll be wrapping up early enough to hit some shows. Any gigs on the Friday or Saturday night?

    • Hey rock-n-rollaz.  We've got 2 raucous NYC duos (us + noise rockers PS XO) looking to play a show in Philly 12/3.  We're happy to join a bill or build one for the night.  Any leads/help/suggestions on venues or bands is much appreciated.  Cheers!

    • There aren't any specialty stores left.  NYC has a few good stores with good selection, although not always the best prices. It's a good place to buy LPs, not 7"s.

Must-see would be Academy Records Annex on n 6th St in Williamsburg.

      Other possibilities-

Rockit Scientist (33 St. Mark's Manhattan)

      Small but decent:

      Co-op 87, 87 Guernsey St Brooklyn

      Permanent Records, Franklin St Brooklyn

If you're looking for CDs, try Kim's 124 First Avenue Manhattan

    • Awesome! I haven't seen any of these bands live before, but one that stands out I'd like to see are the Malamondos. I dig the Straight 8's who are rockabilly and have quite a strong following down in N. Carolina. Gojira-X and Mad Tea Party are also a couple I'd like to check out. Some of the others, I'm not too familiar with...Well, hope it pans out for you AND me!

    • For those of you who don't know, this is an annual musicfest held in Chapel Hill, NC that celebrates the birthday of Elvis Presley. Organized by Dave Quick (co-conspirator of the Heavy Rebel Weekender event), it will be held on January 6 and 7 at the University Inn, and scheduled to perform are: Reverend D-Ray & the Shockers, the Cogburns, Dusty Booze & the Baby Haters, Mad Tea Party, TCB '56, Kelley & the Cowboys, April Mae & the June Bugs, Tiger! Tiger!, the Straight 8's, Delco Nightingale, Alvis, Curtis Eller's American Circus, Gojira-X, the Malamondos, and Kitty Box & the Johnnies. It's a very good possibility that more bands will be added, but that's the latest up-to-date list. If all goes well, I will be heading down to revel in plenty of cheap beer and fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches (not together)! I was curious to see if any of you guys here on the Hideout were going (thinking about going?), because it would be great to meet some of you.

The website is in sore need of an updating, but here's the link if you care to check it out anyway (and see who played LAST YEAR): http://elvisfest.loserville.net/

Not sure why, but it seems the only recent and accurate info for the 2012 event is on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Elvisfest/142161365795488?sk=wall#!/pages/Elvisfest/142161365795488?sk=wall

    • Hands down, the best set I have seen in a long time.  Like Dave mentioned below, it was so nice to run into a bunch of STL'ers I had not talked to in a long time: Dave, his brother Steve, Travis B. from Hartford Coffee, Dancing JJ... It was a really fun night.

Matt from the Blind Eyes pointed out something after the show that I hadn't noticed.  MOAM totally dropped character. They were talking about how they were from Alabama, etc.  I hadn't seen them since '96-'97, so I don't know if dropping the whole "we're from outer space" schtick is a recent thing, or what.  Not that it mattered any, because they just flat out fucking ROCKED.

    • Added note: If anyone in Portland can hook a man up with some job leads let me know. I'm heading out there the 13th of November and so far haven't had much luck. Yeah, I know the market is rough right now but I tend to think that's only if you're to lazy to keep pushing it.
