All female led combos tonite as we do our commemoration for the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre that happened in 1989.

      1. The Johnnys.....Motorcycle Mama....from their 3rd CD, Rock from 2013. Toronto via North West Territories and led by the leather clad 6 foot tall Veronica Johnny! We've had Veronica on for an interview a couple of years back, probably around the time this CD was released.

      2. American Flamewhip....Show Me...from the Winnipeg Riot CD compilation on Dionysus Records and features Joanne Rodriguez on vocals/guitars. Compiled by our fave Winnipeg artist Darren Merinuk, watch out for his next compilation coming out very soon!

      3. Angry Dragons....Girlfriend....from their only 7" on Transistor 66 Records and also from Winnipeg and also featuring Joanne Rodriguez on vocals/guitars.

      4. 24th Street Wailers....Spitfire....from their recent Where Evil Grows CD.  From Toronto but constantly on tour across North America, this combo features Lindsay Beaver on vocals and drums.

      5. Twin Fin....Let's Get Drinkin'....from a soon to be released CD, as in the CD release party is set for Dec 19th at Call The Office. Local combo featuring Dana Hartman on the vocals.

      6. Chica Boom Boom....Just Like Me....from the recent Transistor 66 100th Release download. Winnipeg combo that again features Joanne Rodriguez.

      7. Vibrating Beds....Baby Tell Me....from their only 7" on Transistor 66 Records and came out in 2010. Features Jenna Diubaldo on vocals and guitars.

      8. Detroit Cobras....Cha Cha Twist....from their Mink Rat Or Rabbit Lp on SFTRI. No date, but would guess late 90's as they played at Call The Office in 2002. Feature Rachel Nagy on vocals.

      9. Big Maybelle....Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On....from the double OKEH Sessions LP  This particular session is from 1955 and pre-dates Jerry Lee Lewis' hit version of the song.

      10. Ellen McIlwaine....Higher Ground....from The Real Ellen McIlwaine LP from 1975. She got her start in the NYC coffee houses playing blues and even playing with Jimi Hendrix, then came up to Toronto where she stayed for many years. Used to play at places like The Firehall here in London  and now lives out west, rarely playing live.

      11. Betty Harris....Ride Your Pony....from a compilation called Soul Cellar. An Allen Toussaint cover, we played a version of this tune a few weeks back by The Fleshtones.

      12. Aretha Franklin....Satisfaction....from Aretha Arrives....her second LP on Atlantic from 1967.

      13. Lost Patrol....Pushin' Too Hard....from a cassette called Rarities 1986-1991. Lost Patrol were from Windsor Ontario but played London many times over their career, and this particular song was recorded at Dan Brodbeck's London studio when it was still in his parent's house. Lost Patrol released many cassettes, records and appeared on many What Wave releases and featured the vocals of Karen Marrero.

      14. The Zellots....Soldiers....from Slippery's Club Hits, the cassette that came with What What zine 24 (available at Village Idiot). The Zellots were a local combo from the late 70's that lasted until the early 80's and were a band that coulda and shoulda but didn't. Their full story is in a zine called Mongrel Zine out of Vancouver.

      15. Tyranna....Back Off Baby....from a 7" on Boppa Do Down Records. Late 70's Toronto based combo that have since released an LP of just about everything they ever recorded. Featured Vera Skye on vocals.

      16. Living Deadbeats....Lost...from their only self released LP. Vancouver based combo featuring Lindsay on lead vocals. London connection in Peter Gripp on bass.

      17. White Lung...Sleep Creep....from their first LP It's The Evil. Vancouver based punk combo featuring Mish on lead vocals and facial contortions.

      18. Bush Tetras....Too Many Creeps....from a 1980 7" on 99 Records.....NYC based funk/dance/postpunk combo that released several records and cassettes, all worth checking out.

      19. Delta 5....Mind Your Own Business....from Singles and Sessions 1979-81 CD. UK postpunk/funk political/feminist band that was fairly influential in the big picture.

      20. Venus Fly Trap One Girl Band....Mean Old Negro Nudist....from a download and from France. Like the band name suggests, one person band that defies all musical conventions.

      21. The Shangri-Las....Sophisticated Boom Boom....from a Greatest Hits CD....Mid 60's girl group that was supposedly influential in the sound of the NYDolls....just a Killer song!!!

      22. The Whyte Boots....Nightmare....from Girls In The Garage Volume 2, mid 60's girl garage groups. Just listen to the song, that sums it up perfectly!

      23. Palmyra Delran....Baby Should Have Known Better....from Volume 8 of Little Steven's Underground Garage  Presents The Coolest Songs In The World. Palmyra was in the all female combo The Friggs and did several projects with Ben Vaughn and presently has her own radio show on Sirius Radio. Check it out if you are able, i'm sure it's cool!

      24. Vancougar....Mine First....from the Losin' It CD on Scratch Recordings from Vancouver 2006. An all female combo from Vancouver and they win the prize for the best band name ever!! There's a new release coming out in the new year, probably on Mint Records, their home for the last few.

      25. Young Fast and Scientific.....You Told Me....demo from a local combo from the early 90's and appeared on a What Wave release. Features former Hippie Kelly Mulvey on vocals.

      26. Patti Smith.... Ask The Angels....from Radio Ethiopia.....had to fade this as we ran outta time but certainly not tunes.

Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages and Heys!!!! All greatly appreciated!!!  Hope you enjoyed the show and had as much fun as I did putting this one together! There were so many more bands that I wanted to include, but time restraints won out!
Next week, it's all Xmas tunes.....get your requests in now!!

This is an all London Ontario show with the emphasis on late 70's/early 80's as we were broadcast live at the opening night for Andrew Lewis' Pop Up Poster Show and Sale happening at Westland Gallery here in London Ontario. We played several requests by Andrew Lewis as well as a few selections from Andrew's former combo Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.

      1. The Mongrels.... All Systems Go....from a 2013 demo. The Mongrels are doing their monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party on Sunday December 6 from 4 till 7 PM at the Richmond Hotel.

      2. The Demics....New York City....from the New York City CD on OPM.  Probably the most known song to come out of this city for a certain age group.

      3. The Demics....Heart Of The City....live at the Cedar Lounge 1978. Remember The Demics covering this one many times live. When The Demics first started, their sets consisted mostly of covers, assisting many of us in filling out our record collections!

      4. The Demics...7 and 7 Is....live in Toronto in 1980/81, venue unknown.

      5. Orie Hitt Machine....Killer Inside Me....recorded in somone's bedroom and featuring poet John Cone on vocals?

      6. Uranus....'53 Buick...from their very first 7" EP. Recorded at Awes Studio here in London Ontario back in about 1978.

      7. Uranus....Dixie Fried....live from CFNY, Toronto 1980 and recorded at a car show.

      8. The Stoves...Just My Style....live at the Cedar Lounge 1979. One of those bands that had it all; good song writing, good musicianship, 3 part harmonies, great live show but never got around to releasing anything in their short lifespan.

      9. The Regulators....Sherry Share-It....recorded live at The Polish Hall 1979. Heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed, this combo did release one 7" and played out many times.

      10. NFG....Cyanide.....early demo featuring original guitarist Simon. Found this at the end of a cassette that someone gave me. Sound quality is piss poor, but the overall sound of the song is so different than what came out later. NFG morphed into 63 Monroe which still exist to this day.

      11. Radio 4....Is God A Man....early 80's demo from this band that features Mark Deroux on bass.

      12. Sheep Look Up....Burning....from their cassette. This band evolved from Radio 4 and featured Mark Deroux on bass. Sheep were around for several years, released a 12" EP, appeared on a couple of compilations, moved to Toronto and appeared headed for bigger things until it all fizzled out.

      13. 10 Heads....Solid On The Funky Bass....demo that was written for Mark Deroux when he passed and features the early 00 lineup of 10 Heads.  10 Heads have reformed as Ten Heads on Ten and we saw them last week and they put on a great live show!!!

      14. Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.... A Piece Of Me....from the cassette What's All The Fuzz About that came with What Wave Zine 17 back in 1989. The Scar, as they were commonly called, were a 3 piece with Andrew on the drums, Ian on the bass (now a high school teacher) and Tom Dunphy on guitar and vocals (now in internationally known country band The Rizdales).

      15. Legend Killers....Shoot Magoo....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls...the 7" EP that came with What Wave zine #16. Meant to play the flip side with Capt Scarlet....ooopppsss!!!

      16. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons....Wednesday Rain.....late 80's demo.

      17. Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons....Are You Really Gone....from Four Whom The Bell Tolls, the 7" EP that came with What Wave zine #16 1988.

      18. Purple Toads....40 Pounder Blues.....from their first LP on Star Records and a request by Andrew. The only non-London band we played on this show, but the Purple Toads did play London many times in the late 80's. They were from Oshawa Ontario.

      19. UIC....Cropdusting....recorded live at Call The Office 3/16/1985. UIC were from Exeter, just north of London on Highway 4, later moving to Toronto. This particular live recording has appeared with video but has been removed from youtube.

      20. Boy From Nowhere.... Teenage Head....late 80's demo. Boy From Nowhere played at the Toys For Tots show last weekend and absolutely killed it!!! Check out the pictures on the Radio What Wave facebook page.

      21. Flying Squad.... Think For Yourself.....mid 80's demo. London Ontario's only biker rock band!

      22. Generics....Rockers....early 80's demo....they released one 7" EP that has been bootlegged a couple of times.

      23. The Hippies....Nuclear Disaster....from their only 7" record.

      24. Ukase....Jealousy....late 80's demo. This song was originally done by The Zellots, another London Ontario combo, of which a couple are members of Ukase.

Big Thanx for all the phone calls, emails, Facebook messages and Heys!!! And to Andrew Lews, Poster Artist of the Highest Degree, for playing Radio What Wave in the background at the opening night party for his Pop Up Poster Show and Sale. The Show and Sale continues until Sunday at the Westland Gallery here in London Ontario.
Next week, it's all female voices as we commemerate the Montreal Massacre, a 1989 shooting of female engineering students at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. If you tune in, you might just hear female led bands like; The Angry Dragons, Vibrating Beds, The Zellots, Hiroshima Hearts, Terror Lake, Twin Fin, Nikki and The Corvettes and so much more.

      22. The Fleshtones....Ride Your Pony....from the Roman Gods LP and written by Allen Toussaint who passed away last week.

One hour show due to a sporting event starting at 7PM....didn't get to really start our Allen Toussaint tribute, so that'll be next week along with some early Motorhead for Phil Taylor.

      1. Dave Rave and the Governors...Sweet American Music....from the recent CD of the same name. Dave Rave is part of the Gord Lewis Band who open up for The Flamin' Groovies on Tuesday at This Ain't Hollywood.

      2. Dany Laj and the Looks...Where's The Love....from the recent Word On The Street CD which is now available on vinyl. Played this song last week and it's been stuck in my head since, repeated plays is the only form of musical exorcism i'm aware.

      3. Ten Heads...You Clean Me Up...from the Swimming and Singing CD from 2001. Local combo who have reformed with a few changes and are playing saturday at the APK here in London.

      4. Johnny Terrien and the Bad Lieutenants...El Camino...from their first 7" from 2007. They are also playing at the APK on saturday night, as well as Lucky 6's.

      5. Sonny Vincent....Sink Hole...from his recent Bizarro Hymns CD on Get Hip Records.

      6. The Flamin' Groovies....Shake Some Action....from a promo only 12" and it goes out to Rob the retired Mailman!

      7. The Flamin' Groovies....First Plane Home...from the 1979 LP Jumpin' In The Night.

      8. The Flamin' Groovies...Yeah My Baby....from the 1978 LP Now. And right around here i hit the wrong button and played part of a tune by Sonny Vincent....sorry Sonny!!!Meant to play a Flamin' Groovies commercial. Way too much crazyness happening in the onair studio with the phone a-ringing and 2 guests!!  All for fun!!!

      9. The Flamin' Groovies....Teenage Head....from the 1971 Teenage Head LP

      10. The Flamin' Groovies...Have You Seen My Baby....as above. We played all these Flamin' Groovies tunes as we're off to see The Groovies on tuesday at This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton Ontario.

      1. Hiroshima Hearts....Rust...from their debut CD. Last week they were number one on the CHRW charts, this week, not.

      2. Louis Jordan....Caledonia....from a Mercury CD called Rock'n'Roll released in 1989. These are the Mercury sessions recorded back in 56/57 with the fabulous Mickey Baker on the guitar. Man can that guy play and so far ahead of his time!! An earlier version of this song was a hit for Louis Jordan back in the 40's. Most Louis Jordan compilations just collect his work from the chart topping work from the 40's, as great as it was, this later stuff was even better but didn't do as well in the charts.

      3. Louis Jordan...Let The Good Times Roll... as above....again, Mickey Baker kills it!

      4. The Limboos....Good Times....from a compilation 7" called We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records out of Spain.

      5. King Biscuit Boy....Georgia Slop....from the Mouth Of Steel Lp from 1984 on Red Lightnin' Records and Distro'd in Canada via Stony Plain. King Biscuit Boy was from Hamilton and Canada's greatest harp player for many years running. He started out with Ronnie Hawkins, leaving to form Crowbar then went solo releasing many solo records and playing countless sessions for others. He passed away in 2003 after battling the bottle.

      6. Muscle Souls....Nothing Today....download from a Toronto mod/soul combo who have played many gigs with...

      7. The Reply.... I Must Stop...from their Downtown Soul CD from 2013. Toronto mod/soul combo that we've had play here in London a coupla times and they put on a fantastic live show!

      8. The Balantynes...Argent...from the recent Dark Drives Life Signs Lp on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. A current fave of mine and a band i'd love to see live, but it probably won't happen as they are based in Vancouver and the logistics of touring across Canada aren't agreeable. So for now, i've got this record, a 12" EP and 2 singles.

      9. Marcellus Wallace....Movin' On Up....from their self titled debut CD. Local soul/funk combo who put on a Killer live show!!

      10. After Funk....Rage And Chuff...from the brand new download Til The Sun Comes Up. Toronto soul/funk combo who just happened to be in town at Call The Office the day this show aired.

      11. The Scenics....In The Summer....from the brand new CD, In The Summer on Dream Tower Records. Studio recordings from 1977/78 that have been sonicly tuned and sound better than ever! You can catch live footage of The Scenics back in the day on The Last Pogo Jumps Again documentary.

      12. Dany Laj and The Looks...Where's The Love....from the Word On The Street CD. The vinyl version of this is now available, just go to the band's facebook page for details on how to order. Hopefully we get the band back to London before year end as promised...hint hint.

      13. Human Switchboard....Saturday's Girl....from the 1981 LP, Who''s Landing In My Hangar? on Faulty Products. Cleveland based combo that formed in the late 70's and survived until the mid 80's releasing only one studio LP, coupla singles, a live LP, and a compilation on ROIR cassettes after the fact. Huge Velvet Underground fans but not really obvious from this track as it sounds more like early 60's girl group sounds in the Blondie style.

      14. Flamin' Groovies.... Shake Some Action....from a 1980 single on Line Records out of Germany. Slightly different than the version on the LP of the same name. FG's are scheduled to hit This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton on the 17th and Toronto on the 18th....

      15. Flamin' Groovies....Let That Boy Rock'n'Roll....1975 7" on Philips Records from France.

      16. Flamin' Groovies...River Deep Mountain High....1981 7" on Underdog Records from France. Recorded at Gold Star Studios and Chris Wilson has to strain a little bit to reach those high notes but sounds like he's having fun while doing it.

      17. Long Day's Journey....The Oracle....recent download from this one man psychedelic band from Hamilton Ontario. And there's a brand new full length just released today called The Further Adventures Of The Electric Trip.

      18. Hunger....Workshop....from the Strictly From Hunger! LP from this late 60's/early 70's combo from Portland.

      19. Hank and Frank... Nancy Sinatra....from the cassette, Garunge that came with What Wave zine #14 in 1987. Current combo, Tuerto Loco play this song and they are playing at the St Regis on Saturday night.

      20. Chris Houston....Girls Are Swell....from his 1986 LP, Hate Filled Man on Caucasion Records. Chris was in the Forgotten Rebels, a punk band, back in the late 70's and currently does the occasional solo acoustic gig, where he plays the odd song from that era.

      21. Frankie and Jimmy....Maggie Camp Blues.... a demo from this Hamilton Ontario based blues combo and it looks like we've run outta time way before we've run outta tunes to play this week!

Big thanx for all the phone calls, emails, facebook messages, facebook thanx (there were quite a few this week!!!) and all the Heys!!!! That's what makes it all worthwhile!!!
Back again next week with more noise to annoy.

    • Radio What Wave Playlist October 29/2015

This was an all new show (with 2 exceptions) as so much cool new stuff has come out recently. And this is only the new stuff we've been exposed to, tons more hidden away waiting to be listened to.

      1. The Mongrels...Do It....from their last Radio WW session. And they will  be playing at the monthly Rock'n'Roll Rent Party happening this sunday from 5 till 8PM at the Richmond Hotel in downtown London.

      2. Dustbin Flowers...My Little World....brand new recording of this tune that's going to be on their next CD.

      3. Hiroshima Hearts...14 Floors...from their debut CD which just happens to be number one on the CHRW Radio charts this week! Congrats to HH!!

      4. 30 Helens...The Deep....from their recently released Vague Rants EP. Brand new local combo that features the bass player from Hiroshima Hearts.

      5. M&M Meats... Runners Love....from the brand new Transistor 66 download to celebrate the 100th release on this Winnipeg based label. M&M are not associated with the food chain of the same name and come from Winnipeg.

      6. The Zorgs...Milkshake....another track from the Transistor 66 download. The Zorgs also come from Winnipeg and the download is free from the T66 website.

      7. The Ativans....Jump The Shark...as above, but this band comes from Calgary.

      8. The Noble Savages....I Don't Wanna Be A Boy No More....from their brand new Four Off The Floor 7" on Transistor 66 Records. Hamilton based combo we've played many times on Radio WW!!

      9. The Noble Savages...Lobotomy City.... as above. When this band first formed, our good pal and former Londoner Rob Munro (RIP) was on guitar.

      10. Dynamite Pussy Club...Power....from their album that should be out next month....from Bath UK.

      11. The Government...PhD on Beat....from a brand new 7" on FOLC Records out of Spain which is where this combo comes from. Not to be confused with the Canuck combo of the same name from the late 70's/early 80's.

      12. The Government....Old New Age... as above.

      13. Macumba Brothers....Preacher Man....from a brand new EP on FOLC Records and these guys are also from Spain!

      14. The Trip Wires...Come On and Do The Swim....from We Want To Be Black Volume 4 on FOLC Records. West coast combo on this 7" compilation from Spain.

      15. MFC Chicken....Study Hall....from the brand new Solid Gravy LP on Dirty Water Records from the UK. MFC are from the UK and have also just released a couple of singles on FOLC Records.

      16. MFC Chicken...14 Girls.... as above.

      17. Archie and the Bunkers...Sally Lou....from their brand new album on Dirty Water Records. Two teenage brothers from Cleveland that sound WAY beyond their age!!!

      18. Flesh Rag...I Gotta Go....from the brand new Noise Pollution 7" EP on It's Trash Records. 4 song EP of all Hamilton combos.

      19. Jimmy And The Jerks...Critical Mass, Critical Trash... as above. The Jimmy in this combo, is the same as Frankie and Jimmy, the blues duo we've played many times on Radio WW. And we had them do a live to air session back a couple months.

      20. The Scenics...O Boy....from the brand new In The Summer CD on DreamTower Records. A remixing of recordings done back in 77/78. The Scenics were a Toronto based combo, who really didn't fit in with the rest of the punk/new wave combos of their time period. They were way more artier, but had a tough edge to their sound which doesn't sound dated at all.

This was an almost all vinyl show as the London Record Show is happening on Sunday Oct 25th at Centennial Hall in London Ontario.

      1. Marcellus Wallace...It Ain't Easy....from their self titled debut CD. London Ontario's finest soul combo.

      2. The Ballantynes....PMA...from their recent Dark Drives, Life Signs LP on La Ti Da Records out of Vancouver. They've also released a couple of singles and a 12" that are just as good as this LP.

      3. The Ballantynes....Let's Go....as above.

      4. Vintage Experience....Little Bit Of Soul...from their latest demo. VE are playing saturday night at Jimbo's here in London.

      5. GTV's....Organ Donor....new 7" on Hidden Volume Records. The label is from Baltimore, but the GTV's are from Philly.

      6. Jr. Gone Wild....It Never Changes...from their debut LP, Less Art More Pop from 1987 on BYO Records. Jr Gone Wild are from Edmonton and reformed a year or so ago due to interest in the band. That's right a new Big Enchilada podcast episode is here: The Android Baby Boogie

There is a set featuring a tribute to The Seeds (and their new documentary Pushin' Too Hard); there is an "Around the World in a Daze" set of rocking songs from around the word; and a basic set of (mostly) new songs by Jello Biafra, Acid Baby Jesus, The Vagoos, J.J. & The Real Jerks and more.

So make the android babies boogie and take a bite of this delicious Big Enchilada!

      Boo!

Yes it's Halloween again, which means it's the anniversary of The Big Enchilada podcast! I started this silly thing in 2008 and now I have 8 Spooktacular episodes under my proverbial belt.

This ones's a good one with songs by Roky Erikson, The Nekromantix, Angry Johnny & The Killbillies, Kay Martin, plus lots of bands I've met through this Hideout of ours ... Horror Deluxe, The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies, Fire Bad!, The Nevermores and more. Check out the entire playlist HERE.

Have a safe holiday and don't take any razor blades in your apples!

    • OK, so I've started a new podcast on GPPR. It's called Carburetor Dung (obvious tip o' the hat there to Lester Bangs, yo). It's a mixtape-style podcast (complete with cassette tape SFX) and you won't be hearing me blathering on about the music or anything else, for that matter. The only times you might here my voice will be when I occasionally do some sort of station ID or soundbytes... goofy shit like that. Actually, on this first episode, you won't hear my voice at all! That's because I started working on it before I knew what the title would be and then after I'd figured that out, I wasn't around a microphone. So anyway, another thing that's different about this show is it's gonna be all NEW music... stuff basically recorded and released in the past 5-10 years or so. Why? Because I think we need a lot more of that on the network. I dig the old shit, too, I just get tired of hearing ALL old shit and virtually none of the new punk/garage trash that's out there. So maybe we'll get some new listeners to the network with this one. Hope so, anyway. I hope you dig it, but I really couldn't care less if you don't. You can hear the first episode HERE.
