    • Today's secret word is 5, so everytime you hear the secret word, SCREAM!!! Shades of Peewee's Playhouse as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, go back 55 years to the day the music died and 5 years ago our mentor Lux Interior left the planet.

      1. The Cramps....5 Years Ahead Of My Time....from the How To Make A Monster CD. A 1982 demo for A&M Records....hahahahahah...fat fucking chance! We'll come back to this song a little later tonite.

      2. Legend Killers...Rippin' It Up...from the Boot 2 The Head CD that was recorded live at Call The Office back in 2005. Time flies way too fast and we played this one as someone had a list of all the bands that mentioned The Ramones in songs....they missed this one! And there's 2 shout outs to What Wave on this one if you listen carefully.....

      3. Dustbin Flowers...Bayside Jenny...from their only CD and the party is Feb 14 at Fitzrays here in sleepy London Ontario.

      4. Mere Humans...Temple....demo from this Ottawa combo that has former members of The Evil Farm Children.

      5. The Mogs....Hate...from the El'Mogundo CD on What Wave Records. They will be playing on Saturday night at This Ain't Hollywood in Hamilton, along with Safron Sect and The BB Guns....

      6. BB Guns...I Shot My Baby In Mexico...recorded live on CIUT FM outta Toronto one year ago.

      7. Kumari...I'm Sad....from a brand new 7" on Lost In Tyme Records outta Greece, but the band is from the UK.

      8. The Cramps....5 Years Ahead Of My Time...from The Cramps Totally Destroy Seattle!!! Ivy's favourite bootleg of The Cramps and the very first one i bought, right here in London at Records On Wheels. And speaking of records, Sunday at Centennial Hall is the London Record Show....i'll be at CHRW table hawking What Wave 24 and the Graphic Underground: London 1977-1990 book.

      9. The Cramps....Don't Eat Stuff Off The Sidewalk...from the Psychedelic Jungle LP. I learned all i know from listening to Cramps records....

      10. The Beatles...Bad Boy....from a Mexican 4 song 7" EP.

      11. The Beatles...Dizzy Miss Lizzy....as above.

      12. The Beatles...She Loves You....from a Japanese pressing of Meet The Beatles....I was just a little gaffer in grade one when The Beatles played Ed and didn't see the show. Next day, on the way home from school on the bus, all the kids were screaming ' She Loves You YA YA YA!' over and over!! Warped my little mind and I haven't been the same since!!

      13. Buddy Holly....Down The Line....from the double record Rocks set on Charly Records. This was recorded in 1955, some extra instrumentation was added in 1964 by Norman Petty and now you get to hear it!! Absolute Killer and this is probably where The Black Holes found the version that they cover.

      14. Ritchie Valens...Cry Cry Cry....from the Ritchie LP on Del Fi. Killer guitar work by a young Ritchie Valens.

      15. Big Bopper...Big Boppers Wedding....the flip of Chantilly Lace on Mercury. Love the maniacal laught on this track!

      16. Dead City Soul Review....Burnin'....demo and they were in town last weekend recording their next release.

      17. Dragsville....Royal Drag....from a soon to be released CD.

      18. Sangomas....Chopping Heads....demo from this Montreal combo.

      19. Light Bulb Alley....I Wanna Be Loved....a rough mix for their upcoming CD on Ricochet Sound.

      20. Kensington Hillbillies....Front Line....from their recent 7" and former Londoner Pete Lambert is on the drums.

      21. The Gruesomes...3 Men1 Coffin....from the 7" record that came with What Wave zine #18 back in 1989.

      22. The Gruesomes....What Wave....from Mr Garager's Neighbourhood LP on OG Records from 1989. Our theme song!!

      23. The Gruesomes....I Try....from Thee Cave Comes Alive LP on Action Records. This compilation LP is tracks from a few of the dozen or so cassettes we released that came free with What Wave zine.

      24. Flying Squad...Fie On You.....from the 7" EP, Four Whom The Bell Tolls, yet another record that came free with What Wave zine.

      25. Sidney J Lewis....Bopping To Grandfather's Clock....from the Lux Lives tribute CD. And that was Lux and Ivy yammering between some of the songs.

      26. The Swingin' Neckbreakers....Mighty Mack....from the Shake Break! LP and goes out to the Mighty Hannibal who passed away this week.

      27. Ray Condo and His Hardrock Goners....Could She Kiss.....had to fade this out as the clock on the wall spun way too fast!!

Hope you dug the show!!! Thanx to all that tuned in, all the phone-ins, emails, facebook messages and comments the next day!! Back again next week, but only for an hour as there's a hockey game that night.
See you all at the London Record Show, sunday Feb 9th at Centennial Hall here in London.

    • YEAH , BOY. AS MUCH AS WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE RAMONES , WE'VE SCARCELY TOUCHED ON THEIR SPORADIC POLITICAL INCORRECTNESS....At least , until "too tough to die" , when Johnny seemed to be losing the battle......

I was once told "Suzi is a Headbanger " was un - pc because a "Headbanger" is upposed to mean someone who gives great head   I neve r heard the term used that way , before or since.

"Glad to see you Go "was aimed at Dee Dee's ex GF , CONNIE , WHO SLASHED HIS ASS WITH A BROKEN BEER BOTTLE ,  and had almost taken Arthur Kane's thumb off wheN she dated him.      "GET ThE GLORY , LIKe cHARLES MANSON". It was a fantasy , seemingly shared by the whole band , of putting her out. She did it to herself , with drugs.    There's so many others......

    • Fun topic! Here's some I thought of:

Ramones - Loudmouth, 53rd & 3rd or Today your Love, Tomorrow the World.

      Oingo Boingo - Little Girls

Fats Domino - Just Like a Woman

    • Thank you. It's been going on for years.

Some of my contributions were not directly credited to me (They were edited , with new content added , usually.) .But there are some new ones under my name.

When the page began , most people , myself included  , only knew Death for "Keep on Knockin"" if even that.

When Death first played Chicago , I was going to go , but , did'nt. I did'nt feel like being on public trans longer than at the actual show , that night. I heard they only did some of the songs on that first 12" , and padded the set out with Reggae songs from their other  band.  I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A HAPPY CAMPER TO FIND THAT OUT , IN PERSON. SORRY........But , they obviously have it together , now .

I missed them again on NYE , because Roky Erickson was also playing , I might add , in a less batshit crazy part of town .......

    • That link is killer! I'll read more of it tomorrow. Thanks for that.

    • Good point , I forgot they were still finding their way in '73. Just as people don't want to recall The Bad Brains were formed from the ashes of a Jazz Fusion group , til they later came under the spell of Reggae and Punk. It just did'nt make good copy "Before The Ramones"......THERE'S STILL SOME TIGHT GROOVES THAT GO BACK TO RAW FUNK IN SOME OF DEATH'S RECORDINGS. That's not a bad thing. i'd say they were Punk , or Proto Punk , but not in a Ramones /Heartbreakers /Dead Boys kinda sense. Most people that had'nt dared venture into The Bowery at the time  would'nt have known anout the embryonic NYC PUNK SCENE.

What Death were into was VERY different from the Black music scene in Detroit , obviously , but , even if they knew teh right people , it might've taken them at least a couple of years to infiltrate the post Stooges/MC5 club scene , which did go one to include people like Hiawatha Bailey (Cult Heroes) and The (Detroit) N****ERS , who , reportedly , were assembled by a White Svengali    www.roctober.com

click on Black Punk. Lively up your damn self. : ) John.

    • Dammit! It quoted your whole thing and i can't edit it. I'll try again:

      John: " THE RAMONES BEGAN , IN EARNEST , IN 1974. DEATH STARTED OUT , WHEN , IN '73 ? ."

You're spot on with everything in that post. But to further your point, i quoted this to point out that Death actually didn't start until Spring of '74 (the Ramones formed in Jan '74), they didn't write "for the whole world to see" until Oct '74 (and of course, the Ramones were playing CBGB's by August...with March being their first show), and "for the whole world to see" was recorded on Feb 18th, 1975 (the ramones recorded their first 15 song session on Feb 2nd, 1975).

I love Death and think they were well before their time...but yeah, the whole "Before the Ramones" thing is not only pointless to point out (for the exact reasons you mentioned), but it's not even true, period. I think what confuses people is the fact the Hackney brothers were a funk group called Rock Fire Funk Express in 1973. You can hear their song "people save the world" on youtube, recorded in Sept '73. It's not even close to what they did in Death.

    • No one's mentioned 1 2 5 by The Haunted?

A buddy of mine had a band which was pretty directly inspired by that song. Take a listen to them here http://calpeckandthetramps.bandcamp.com/

Good luck with the harmonica, I've tried and given up so many times.

    • Here is a pretty decent and fairly recent interview with Richard Meltzer I just stumbled upon.

      http://unionpole.com/assets/otp.pdf

Meltzer is pure genius in my opinion. From Vom and Blue Oyster Cult to the Ascetics of Rock and Gulcher, his work always fascinates me. If you have favourite interviews, writings, articles, stories concerning Meltzer—link'em up!
