As many of you know, the FDA went after 4 Loko, or "FOUR loko" as it's spelled on the 24 oz. can, due to the danger it proposes to its consumers...For those who don't know, this was a flavored malt beveredge, filled with taurine, guarana, caffeine, sugar, and of course, alcohol. There were numerous fruity concoctions you could choose from, like fruit punch (my favorite), grape, orange, etc., plus there was a lemon tea as well. Speaking from personal experience, chugging just 1 of these sweet, tasty (well, depending on your tastes) delights would seriously start delivering you to the "Promised Land" of drunkeness! Inexpensive, you could find these brightly colored cans in most all convenience stores, ghetto grocer marts, and those creepy gas station/porn shops sitting on the side of the highway...So the "fever" for this party punch catches on, especially with the college students, and let's face it, high school kids would pay their older bros or some wino on the street to go in and grab a few cans with said kids' allowance money. Then the grim reality sets in that some folks can't handle their alcohol! I mean, I would chug 2 cans and I would totally black out! Hmmm...consuming anything alcoholic in a fast rate can make anybody go do an undie raid at the local preacher's house! Ok, so now you have "kids" that go waaaaay overboard with this stuff and get alcohol poisoning, puke their guts out, or even worse, die! Again, how many other types of liquor can do that to you when you decide to break all Jim Morrison one night? Well, we got some kids dying or just getting really sick who make it on the news...And what was laying around these alcoholic Russian Roulette players, but empty cans of 4 Loko! Yes! I've woke up before to empty bottles of Evan Williams and Mad Dog 20/20 myself, as well as not remembered what the hell happened after chugging down the powerful "4"...So there is a public outcry against what happens to be one of my fave "cheap drunk" drinks, the FDA just has to do something! So now, state governments work to ban this brand from stores, and of course, the Drink Four company bows down and agrees to lift the caffeine out of its formula...I don't have an issue with that, but if I'm not mistaken, bars can still serve Red Bull with vodka, and anybody can mix a Full Throttle with rum! So was the FDA wrong in going after not only Drink Four, but other makers of similar brands? So how many times has college students gotten so sick off say, Wild Irish Rose, vodka shots, Tequila, etc.? But the FDA never went after them....Hmmm...What are your thoughts?
